How do I organise my folders by date in iPhoto photo library?

Hi - Within the PHOTOS section in the source list I have created 200 folders which I have given a title based on a date.  For example, 2013 12 10 for today.  The thing is, I can't get them all to file in date order within the PHOTO section.  All fine within EVENTS but not PHOTO.  I guessed this was because iPhoto files within its library not by title of folder but by the date on which images were taken.  This would figure as quite a lot of them are very old and have only recently been scanned in, thus making iPhoto assume that the scan date was the date the images were actually taken.  So.....I have experimented with changing both the date and the time of various shots within a few folders.  This works (I think!) for some folders which then file as I'd wish, but not for others.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!    Simon

Hi Terence
I may be using the wrong terminology!  I am able to group images in PHOTOS in what I've described as folders.  Ther are the folders imported from Windows into iPhoto and thae appear in the PHOTOS section pretty much as they appear in EVENTS apart from date (which is the title of each 'folder.) order.
If I turn off titles all my images appear individually in tagged date order in a big list, but ideally I like to continue to organise and view them (when I need to) in the same way as I view them within EVENTS.  PHOTOS can cope with all that neatly enough, but the folders/albums will not file in date order.
Does that help?!

  • How can I organise my projects by date?

How can I organise my projects by date?

Oddly enough, there is no option I know of to organize by date or even by name. Later projects I've created end up between earlier projects I've done.
Maybe something to suggest via the "Create an idea" action? (Go back out to the discussions and you should see it in the upper right.)

  • Hi I currently have about 20,000 photos in I photo, which the 'info' displays as being 68GB's worth. However the I Photo Library with the Pictures Folder displays it's size as 341.21GB ... Why would that be? How do I look at what's in the I Photo Library?

Hi I currently have about 20,000 photos in I photo, which 'info' displays as being 68GB's worth. However the I Photo Library within the Pictures Folder displays it's size as 341.21GB ... Why would that be? How do I look at what's in the I Photo Library to figure out what's happening, and if there's stuff in there I need to delete?

Best to keep the terms clear.
    You export photos from iPhoto.
You move the iPhoto Library to an external disk.
They're are quite different processes. Exporting means at the end you have a file outside iPhoto. Moving means the files are still inside iPhoto.
    So if you say:
I'm currently exporting the  library to an external drive
That reads like I''ve selected all the photos in iPhoto and am exporting them to a folder on this external drive, and at the end I'll have a folder full of photos outside iPhoto. Is that what you mean?
Is it best to have a 'master' I photo library on an external drive for all the thousands of pics Im never really going to look at often - and a smaller one kept on the HD for day to day usage ...
Best? Hard to know. It might make sense on a portable. But if you're on an iMac why do you need a smaller one on the internal? Why not just have the whole library on the external? There is no performace hit.

  • How do I quick look up the date on a photo I have added to a photo project in iPhoto 11? If I hover long enough it sometimes appears.

There has to be a better and more efficient way to do this. This is quite frustrating. I separated all of my "chapters" for my book into different albums but then could only create the book from one of them. So, I took all the photos into an album and am now trying to separate chapters as I create them from scratch in my book project. That aside, it's been troublesome now as well as the past projects on how to quickly display the info (the date mainly) for the images included in the project menu on the right when I click "photos". I do get the info about 60-70% of the time by hovering for a quite lenghty period of time, but this is taking forever. Please.... quick solution! Thanks all!

Thanks Terence. I know about that in iPhoto already. I use it often. However, that is not an option when creating a book. When you click on the photos button in the bottom right corner when creating a book, it shows the photos but there is no "info" selection. The only way I find out the date is to drag the photo into the book, then go back and hover over the page number it was imported to and hope eventually the date shows up. If it's not the date for the chapter I wanted (as my chapters are divided by months), I then drag it back out and try again until I find a photo that does have that date. It's taken hours and is different from previous versions of iPhoto where I have created books before. This is iPhoto 11, trying to create a hard bound book.

  • How to create an album based upon date of importing photos

today i imported over 2000 photos with dates accross three years time frame. how can i create an album based upon the date i imported the photos? or can i.
if not, how would i add these pix to a specific album without going through the whole library some 15,000 photos strong now?

Check out the Film Rolls ->
    View -> Film Rolls
Each import creates a Roll, so the most recent one's should be easy to find. Select all and make an album from them.

  • How long does it take to rebuild an 89GB iPhoto 11 Library?

I pulled an older iPhoto library file from a Time Machine backup, replaced the faulty one.  (Took an "over-night" to do so!)
When I tried to launch IPhoto after doing so, no pics showed up in the libarary.  Per the dialog box suggesiton, I did the Command / Option library rebuild.  I checked ALL of the boxes on the next dialog box.
The current status message is "Rebuilding Libary Database" / "Rebuilding Library: 20801 Versions restored."  The little dash-wheel spinny thing is spinning in the middle of a gray iPhoto window.
It has been doing this for about 3 hours.  Q1) Is this normal?  Q2) Should I "let it go?"
Q3) Was that the best way to restore an iPhoto library from a Time Machine backup?  If not, please advise re: a better way.  The data is there (via nighly Time Machine Backups) , so I just need to know how to restore / replace it.
    Thanks!

I think I found the solution in this post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2400554?start=0&tstart=0
it worked for a couple of people there and it worked for me as well.
    Here is what I did:
    1) copied my library which had probably been corrupted by several failed attempts to access it
    2) deleted iPhoto app, went to HD/Library/Receipts and removed any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name. (I think another good option would be to use an App removal software like Appcleaner or Trashme, I actually sed the former and it worked)
    3) restored a good copy of the iPhoto library from Time Machine
    4) installed iPhoto from the iLife disk (you can do that from the recovery disk, if you had it bundled with your mac)
    5) remembering that iPhoto '11  had some problems with the library already from first release (version 9.0), before launching it, I run Software Update and downloaded first version 9.1 and then 9.1.5 (downloading 9.1.5 was crucial, for some reason Software Update downloaded only version 9.1 at first, and it wasn't still able to read my library)
    6) launched iPhoto 9.1.5 and all my library was there, as far as I remember in exactly the same status I had left it: events, faces, places, albums, smart albums, mobile me, facebook and flickr galleries, all in place!
Step 1) and 3) might not be necessary, especially if you haven't messed up a little the library deleting some files in it in order to have iPhoto try to rebuild them
I hope this works also for other people!

  • When i open iPhoto it says my photo library is unreadable and will not open. How can i fix this without losing my photos?

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable... Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
How do i solve this problem? Dpes rebuilding your photo library delete all your photos? I have thousands of photos with no back up HELP!!

Well if you have no back up you need to make a back up now. It might be too late, but you're not going to know until you fix this.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    Then try:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I-Photo Library: How to move a Iphoto Library from 1 hard drive to another?

The hard drive that I have my I-Photo library on is running out of space and is my
start-up drive. I want to move the i-photo library from the start-up drive to my storage drive which has plenty of storage space. My Machine is G4 desktop having
OX10.5.8 operating system.I would like to know how to do this. I tried searching for i-photo library Manager but could not find it

    Simply:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the Other Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • My IT department transferred images from my Blackberry to my Iphone, they are in "Photo library". there is 1500  images, many are duplicates and when I hit edit, delete is not an option. how do i delete the duplicate images?

my IT department set up my Iphone and transferred the images from my Blackberry. I have over 1500 images showing in "Photo Library" and lots of them are duplicates (same image). When I hit edit it will not allow me to delete them, delete is not an option shown. How do I get rid of the duplicates?
In Photo library, when I hit edit the only avail options are share or add to. Please help, i dont want 1500 images on the phone.

Are they really duplicates or are you simply referring to the Photo Library?
Just as a song is in your itunes library and the exact same song can be accessed via a playlist, all synced photos are in the Photo Library and those exact same photos ( not duplicates) can be accessed from the chose folder/album.
You delete these pica the same way you put them there.  The sync process.  Deselect them in itunes and sync.

  • How to organise my events in date order?

I usually organise my events in date order but some have gone somewhere else, the album info say it starts may 6th 2014 but on the event it says it starts in 2013???

That can happen, if your event contains hidden photos.
The event below contains a hidden Photo from September 2002. When I make the hidden photos visible the date of the event will change.
Enable "Hidden Photos" in the "View" menu. Then both date ranges should match.
You will recognize the hidden photos by the "x" in the corner after unhiding them.

  • Disable Photo downloader- how do I organise the pictures

I have been using photo downloader with my PSE6.  Everytime I insert a SD card,  the downloader will organise all the pictures and put them in folders according the date that the pictures were taken.
Recently my computer is getting slower and I would like to disable the downloder from startup.  I can still manually transfer my pictures.  But how do organise the pictures by date automaticlly if I am not using downloader ?

Well, if course I know how to create folder manually.  Plse read the question carefully,  doenloader is creating folders for me automatically when I put my SD card,  the question is after I disable downloader,  can I do this?  Imagine arranging thousand of pictures manually....
Reading the question carefully, you ask "can I do this"? And I am very unclear about what the pronoun "this" is referring to. Yes, you can move photos from the SD Card to your hard drive and put them in folders by date. But I have the vague sense that you are asking something different. So I have read the question carefully and still am unclear about the question.

  • I tried to sinc my photos and i ended up deleting off my phone all the pictures.  i only ended up with one folder, and i cant figure out how to put rest of folders from my computer back on my phone.....help

i tried to sinc my photos and i ended up deleting off my phone all the pictures.  i only ended up with one folder, and i cant figure out how to put rest of folders from my computer back on my phone.....help
and on a second problem.  I need to know for sure that my contacts are backed up on my computer

Create a parent folder on your computer to store the named folders of photos that you want transferred to your iPhone. Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, select the parent folder. All named folders of photos within will be transferred to your iPhone as separate folders or albums.
Regarding your 2nd question, this should be easy. Your contacts should be available on your computer with or without an iPhone or any cell phone, which can be lost or stolen.
Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process, not a good idea to depend on this either since the iPhone backup includes a significant amount of other data. Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer. With Windoze, this can be with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events and notes, or with the address book app used by Outlook Express with XP and by Windows Mail with Vista and Windows 7 called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.
