How do I organise my photos?

I am new to Aperture and am trying to get my head around how Aperture 3.2.4 organises its collections.
Most of my images are coming from my iPod Touch running iOS 7.04.
Photos in iOS7 is supposed to organise the photos in Camera Rolls and whilst it does have multiple rolls they are few, and I can not see how they are divided up. I would have thought they would be by each batch or location that I shoot, but no.
When I bring them into Aperture I would like them to be grouped by actual shoot sequence, but by default they just go into one large "Untitled Project" . Renaming that just changes the name and it is still one large undistinguished collection.
I have been manually selecting parts of the camera roll and adding them to Projects with Location date. That is tedious for the 1000s of photos I take.
…and I am not sure this is doing what I want.
I'd like to be able to export/delete the actual collection as needed.
This where the confusion sets in.
Out of the Libraries, Albums, Folders which actually represents real files not just virtual collections.
I am uncertain what contains what ie which is a subset within a larger collection.
Folders are the most confusing they seem to be within and outside Libraries and Albums. Is that right? And if they are either how do you tell what they are?
I get that there are virtual collections: Smart Albums, Books, Light Tables, Slideshows, Web Journals & Web pages but it seems Libraries, Albums, Projects & Folders blur the difference.
Once in a Project (or whatever physical collection) how do I move photos into other more sensible collections? Is a Project the wrong division for collections?
Also how do I manage Vaults. Are these simply backups? Do they automatically synchronise with the main collection, or are they a one off movement/copy of files?
Is there a faster way of selecting images than unchecking all, selecting items again then checking them? This is quirky in its behavior. If I have some checked, then add more it won't let me check or uncheck them. I have to resort to Uncheck all and start again.

Gern geschehen, Peter!
You are obviously the go to person here.
Thanks, I do what I can You'll find quite a few real real experts here, when you hang around a bit.
Folders hold 'aliases' or pointers to either individual images or Projects or other folders?
Folders can be nested -  they can hold other folders, albums, projects, smart albums, boook, but don't hold individual images. Folders in Aperture don't relate to folders in the Finder on your disk. And there are no "aliases" to folders in Aperture. You cannot have the same project or album twice in  two different folders. I use the folders to be able to hide or disclose groups of projects and albums - notice the disclosure triangles besides the folders:
Why can I put a folder inside a Project but I can't drag images to it or add them when I create it.
Folders hold library items that can hold images. Drag an album with images into that subfolder.
In fact I don't seem to be able to put anything in folders, Images, Projects, Albums or other Folders, whether they are inside Projects or inside the Library.
You should be able to drag albums to a subfolder of a project, but not images or other projects: projects cannot be nested. How did you drag? Drag directly onto the folder icon.
Aperture certainly moves in mysterious ways!

  • How does iPhoto organises the photos?

    Dear fellow Mac users,
how are you! Tonight, my parents had a lot of fun taking photos of them using Photo Booth... awww. those love birds haha.. and i made a music slideshows for them. (too bad i dont know how to burn it into a VCD for them to watch on TV). I dont have a DVD RW.
    My question is
    1. How does Iphoto organises the photos? It seems like there are many dublicate copy of the same photo.... i am kind of confused. (There is .. Original Folder and Modified Folder) and worried that it will eat up my disk space
    2. Is it possible for me to burn a slide show VCD?
    Thank you soooo much!

    StanB:
As PhillyPhan warned, you don't need to use the Finder to locate an image file for use outside iPhoto. You can either drag the thumbnail to the desktop to get a copy of it or use the File->Export->File Export menu route to export the file to the desktop. The second option allows you to resize it if desired. So there's no need to go rummaging around in the iPhoto Library folder to find a file.

  • How do I organise iPad photos on a PC?

My Dentist has just got a new iPad and needs to know how to organise photos on it. He is a PC user and wants to use the iPad Photos app to show patients before and after pics of various treatments. He likes the iPads pinch to zoom feature, but at the moment, one week in, he isn't ready to go and buy a Mac just to sort and organise his photos on the iPad. He adds the pics to the iPad directly from the camera using the Camera Connector.
So, how can the photos on an iPad be organised into albums? Is there a way to edit them? Is there a version of iPhoto for the PC? How can PC users work with the photos?
    TIA

First, he needs to import the photos from the camera-imports to the PC. Syncing does not do this. He can use the Digital Camera Import wizard or the Windows file explorer by clicking on "My Computer" and navigating to the ipad under "devices". (First, connect the ipad to the PC-USB port)
For windows pc's Photo albums of photos already on the PC:
    1) Create a master sync folder on your pc with no photo files at the root level of the folder.
    2) Create sub-folders within the master sync folder with the subfolders named what you want the ipad's photo albums to be named. In this case, each customer's name (and date of visit?)
    3) Place the photo files you want to sync in the appropriate subfolder within the master sync folder.
    4) In itunes on the photos tab, select the master folder as the sync folder.
    5) After syncing, each subfolder will be an album on the ipad with the proper photos contained there-in.
Based on the above procedure, he may be better off (fewer steps) to just import the camera/xrays directly to the PC, then organize them, then sync the Master folder to the ipad.

  • How do I organise a photo show in file order?

I'm trying to import a load of photos into a movie I'm making. I've named them all so they stack in the correct order, but Premier 8 seems insistant on putting them in date order, which is no good for my purposes.
How do I get it to put them into the movie in file order?

That works, thank you Steve! I had in in "Projects" but "grid view" which doesn't seem to give that option. As a list it does.
The next issue I have is that the photos are very high quality and imposible to drag onto the timeline it seems. I guess the only answer is to reduce the file sizes?

  • I have transferred some photos from an sd card using an apple adaptor to my iPad then I did a sync in iTunes. How do I now organise the photos into folders?

I would really appreciate some help with this.

At the moment you can't move photos between albums directly on the iPad, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn (from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos) :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device.
Until then you need to organise the photos in folders on your computer and then sync those folders to the iPad - and you need to sync all the folders (and therefore albums) that you want on the iPad together in one go, as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad; not including photos in a sync is how you delete them from the iPad.

I have been trying to find and organise my photo albums in Itunes, like I use to be able to along time ago, but now Im bewildered!  Im lost I cannot find any albums in the itunes library or any topics on how to do this.  I want to free up space and remove pictures but am unable to ! Please help !

Your photos are not in iTunes. iTunes is simply used to sync the photo from yoru computer to your iPhone.
You organize your photos in folders (look in Pictures folder in yoru user folder) or with your photo software on the computer.

It would appear under the organizer tab that the photos are organised in the lowest folder in the folder structure within Windows Explorer.  How can I use the Windows Explorer structure to organise the photos within Elements.

In a situation such as yours, I tend to consolidate items into folders so I have folders of nice workable numbers of images, somewhere between 20 and 200 images. Now, whatever, once you've imported, do your moving within LR, not the OS! I will select all in a folder and drag into a folder a level or two or three above, and then delete the newly empty subfolders. I hope this helps a bit!
Once you've reached just new Imports of camera output, you'll be flying along.

In addition to chrisfromlouisville's suggestion you might want to post in the iPhoto forum where those experts are.

2.)  How do I remove an album on my ipad?
3.)  i have taken over 1,000 photos on ipad, now it won't sync stuff to the ipad because it said there is not enough space.  I want to delete some past synced photos from the computer to create space, but I don't know how to find it on computer.  It sycned a portion of a file onto the ipad which is useless to me so I want to delete it all & start fresh.
4.)  I was thinking about copying some of those photos over so it would show up as new data maybe then it would sync to my ipad as a new & competed album.  Or will this create more problem because it would only be creating more photos?
5.)  By the way, I don't know how to use dropbox or anything like it, so I take photos of some files & web screen that I use regularly to always have access regardless of internet access.  That is why I have so many photos.  But I want to be able to separate & organized them by files, web screens, or topics.  I also want to be able to delete & update as needed.
6.)  If needed I am willing to delete 4 G of downloaded app to create space.  Will this help the space issue?  Also could I just leave the downloaded app to my computer only & only sync to to ipad as needed, since I don't need app as regularly.  I NEED "photo" ALL of the TIME!  I am out in the field, instead of carrying stack & stack of papers, I carry ipad with photo of these daily needed papers!

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • How do I add new photos to my external back up without duplicating the entire library?

My iPhoto libraries are a complete mess. I can't be the only person who:
    a) wants a number of libraries for different types of image (digital art, holiday snaps, etc)
    b) wants to keep the bulk of his library on an external drive, to free up space on my main hard drive.
One problem is that iPhoto does not show things clearly. It does not say:
    a) which hard drive the currently displayed iPhoto library is in
    b) which iPhoto library is currently open (at the top it just says iPhoto instead of giving a directory).
Another problem is that when I import photos from my iPhone or camera, they automatically go into the iPhoto libaray on my main hard drive; I don't seem to be asked: "To which iPhoto library do you want to import these photos?"
On top of that, whilst in some cases a pop-up asks if you really do want to add a duplicate image to a certain location, I haven't found a simple way when doing back ups to ONLY ADD NEW IMAGES to an existing library ('Apply to all' etc.)
As a result, I have loads of duplicates in different libraries, with crazy titles like: "Mostly family photos up to Sept 2010" or "Digital images to June 2012, many duplicates."
A friend recommended iPhoto Library Manager but I don't find that well laid out and haven't used it.
As I've also had difficulty upgrading my iPhoto libraries, I've started saving my photos in a regular folder (not iPhoto), with View set to large icons. I find that easier to organise.
So....Can anyone advise on a simple clear way of organising my photos and adding new ones in to the appropriate folder?
    Many thanks,
    Eatmorenuts

One problem is that iPhoto does not show things clearly. It does not say:
    a) which hard drive the currently displayed iPhoto library is in
    b) which iPhoto library is currently open (at the top it just says iPhoto instead of giving a directory).
Correct - it always uses the last selected library - If you use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to manage your libraries you do have a display showing whaih=ch library you are using
And with iPhoto '11 you can switch libraries from the file menu
You can always suggest a new feature to Apple - iPhoto manu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
Another problem is that when I import photos from my iPhone or camera, they automatically go into the iPhoto libaray on my main hard drive; I don't seem to be asked: "To which iPhoto library do you want to import these photos?"
Incorrect - when you import photo to iPhoto they always go to the currently selected library which could be any library in any valid location
On top of that, whilst in some cases a pop-up asks if you really do want to add a duplicate image to a certain location, I haven't found a simple way when doing back ups to ONLY ADD NEW IMAGES to an existing library ('Apply to all' etc.)
Not sure what you are saying - did you see the "apply to all" check box?
As a result, I have loads of duplicates in different libraries, with crazy titles like: "Mostly family photos up to Sept 2010" or "Digital images to June 2012, many duplicates."
Correct IF you do not have a good plan for managing multiple libraries and IF you do not folow it - iPhoto is a basic program designed for the mass market and knows only about the current library - it has no idea about any otehr libraries - it is far better to have only one library - but if you choose to have multiple libraries tehn you must ahve a good plan for managing them and yo must follow yoru plan - if you do not then it will not work wisince what you doing is not a feature of iPhoto
A friend recommended iPhoto Library Manager but I don't find that well laid out and haven't used it.
Well your friend made a good suggestion and it is a great product for manageing multiple libraries - but if you do not like it then you should not use it
As I've also had difficulty upgrading my iPhoto libraries, I've started saving my photos in a regular folder (not iPhoto), with View set to large icons. I find that easier to organise.
Then the question arises "why are you using iPhoto at all?" It does not work like you want, you prefer using teh finder to organize your photos and you have created a mess by trying to use iPhoto in ways it was not designed to be used - your best choice is to not use iPhotoa and do it your self the way you prefer
So....Can anyone advise on a simple clear way of organising my photos and adding new ones in to the appropriate folder?
Yes - use one library and learn how to use iPhoto (BTW in iPhoto folders do not hold photos - they only hold albums and other folders) - the solution is to have one library with multiple backups and to organize using albums, folders, Keywords and folders in the single iphoto library
Otherwise you need a different program and different workflow - what you have is not working and is almost impossible to make work - either use iPhoto the way it is designed or use a program that is designed like you want

How do I reorganize my photos on iPad 2?  I need to move (not copy) photos from one album to another.  When I use the copy function to another album, and then try to delete an image from the original album, the system wants to delete the photos from all albums.  Please help.

You can't do it directly on the iPad - the new album functionality basically only allows you to copy photos into those new albums, you can't move them. The way that I think of it as working is that you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you then delete the original photo on the iPad you therefore automatically delete all the pointers to it.
If you want to re-organise your albums then you will need to do it on your computer and then sync those albums over to the iPad

How do I open a photo from the Aperture library in Photoshop CS3 so it opens in the RAW converter first, as it would if I opened it from bridge? I can only see options for TIFF and PSD.

You could import your RAW-files as referenced images into aperture. This way your Raw-files would live in a folder structure on one or more harddrives. Third party applications like Photoshop would have access to your files too. You could implement a DAM strategy like Peter Krogh´s (http://www.peterkrogh.com/).
Disadvantage: you would be responsible for a thorough organisation of your files (raws and derivatives).
