How do I override contacts on my iPhone 3g? Former Mobile Me User

Okay, I'm not quite ready to get a new iPhone (I have an iPhone 3Gand it is causing some problems. I was syncing with MobileMe and everything was fine. Obviously with that service ending (I kept my email, but don't have a device to use iCloud properly), I have to find another sync method.
The problem is I had a bunch of contacts that I wanted to get rid of and I wanted to organize them a bit into new groups. I deleted some groups I no longer needed, and spent about two hours cleaning out old contacts and thought I'd be able to use the advanced setting and override the data on my iPhone. This is where the problem began. (I am running the latest version of Lion on a 2Ghz Intel Core Duo). The only option I had was to check "Sync Contacts (wouldn't let me choose groups, just "All Contacts" and then I had to check "replace Contacts with information on this computer." That seemed fine. Then it said warning, this account is being synced by another user" or something like that. I figured it was a MobileMe migration issue and wasn't too worried. I held my breath and hit "Apply." Well none of the old contacts were deleted and none of the new groups are there. All that changed was a "From My Mac/ All from my mac" section appeared. Now my 373 contacts that I had whittled down on my computer are 626 on my iphone.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Here are some other items that might have affected the situation:
I originally was syncing this iPhone to an iMac (the one with the flat panel/metal arm coming out of half a basketball). I bought this macbook used and despite trying migrate everything, I was never able to change the admisitrator account from user. I didn't realize this until after I had set up everything under the admin account. So I didn't bother to set up the old account under my name, figuring it wasn't a problem since I was logged into iTunes under my iTunes account.
I am thinking that I am going to have to revert to factory settings or something, but I have everything nicely set up and I don't really want to start over.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! (I will eventually get a new iPhone and don't mind setting up that one from scratch, just looking for a bandaid for now!) Thanks in advance.

I beleive the Contact Blocking is an iOS 7 feature, hence why your iPhone 4S & 5 now has it where it didn't before.
I know of the following areas where you can block a contact.
Any Contact with IN the Phone app
Any "Unknown Number" in the Recent tab in the Phone app
Any Contact with in iMessages... Click the name at the top, then the i with a circle around it. Scroll to the bottom.
Settings---> Phone---> Blocked---> Add New
However, from what it looks like you can not block any contacts from with in the Contact app.
You may want to look into Verizon's own blocking system, this is done on they're end. So the phone won't even see it, and it's for any type of phone. Just sign into your VW account.
Left column you should see "Block Services."
Center/top Manage Family Safegaurds and Controls.
Then the very first one should be Call & Message Blocking
Right side of screen is the View Details & Edit. Select that, then you can select which phone you want to apply the blocking to. Once on that screen you can enter the number(s) to be blocked. You can make it so it's for just that phone you want to apply to it. Or all the phones on the plane.
Just make sure that you know that it blocks the number for 90 days, but you can reblock it once the 90 days are up. And that you only have 5 sets of numbers per phoneline.
I've used it in the past and the people who've been calling me hasn't call me since. Even after the 90 day blocking period. Probably because they got the hint. lol
