How do I partionera, formatera and re-instal OSX

I had a small nightmare waking up last saturday. My mac mini apple cinema screen didn't wake up. I'm running OS X 10.9.3 w. 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
In safe start mode, I can acess programs. But Safari flimmers and I can't watch videos. I know that there's no sound in that mode. After starting the computer again, I can only see my desk and the menu bar. If I click on it, I get the beachball.
I have tested the computer w. apple hardwear test from the applications CD, it took about 53 mins w.o. any faults detected. I also tested the the harddrive in the toolsprogram file. Harddrive is fine.
Safari flimmers and grey sides comes up from the bottom of the page and small loggin windows just blink like a strobe.
I use Firefox to write here, but I'm an old guy and only knows Safari and would like to continue using it. Did I mention that I don't know a whole lot about computers? Copy and paste was hard to figure out after a friend wrote this cmd-c and cmd-v, but I got help from another friend in that matter.
I think something went horribaly wrong when I set it to rest on friday night, like I always do.
Do I just install the OS X Mountain Lion CD and try again?
Will my apple id account still be there?
I have done 2 backups on my music and photos, plus the harddrive.
Happy for anykind of answer, I might not understand how-to but I will figure it out.

Thanks, but I still have the same crapy Safari flimmer, I can't axcess my desktop after restart. After safe start I only use Firefox, Safari is like strobe light. My computer is from -09. I'm currently running Mavericks if that helps. I can't install OS X from my install CD, because of Mavericks.
I'de be damned if I'm going to by a third apple computer.

  • My iMac is getting really slow.  It used to boot in about 30 seconds, now it's over 3 minutes.  I am thinking I may backup photo's Videos and such and format the hard drives and re-install OSX.  Any thoughts on this?

This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot.  I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac.  I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX  but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me.  (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.)  Any advice is welcome.  Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
    Thanks.

In addition to Mike's suggestions,  you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you would like to sync music to your iPhone, you will need to use iTunes on your computer, and then follow the directions in the article linked to below.

How do I uninstall snow leopard and re-install OSX leopard?

Sorry to hear that, Snow Leopard runs as fast or faster than either Tiger and Leopard did on my Jan 2006 Early Intel iMac on 2GB of RAM?
Before you blame Snow Leopard, run the Extended Apple Hardware Test and check the SMART status of your Hard Drive to make sure that you do not have another problem.

  • Format and Clean install

I have a virus which I suspect is a keystroke logger. I cannot isolate it and want to do a complete wipe and format and re-install XP professional. (Since the unit was new I have always had occasional freeze-ups, etc.,  which I would also hope to correct with the latest version of software.)  Unfortunately when I purchased my A31 new from IBM, no Windows XP discs were provided. Now the Lenovo web site says that only questions and inquiries are accepted from users who are under warranty. Is there no other solution than to go out and buy a new XP Professional (or Vista?) software package?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Welcome to the forum!
Does your A31 still have the orginal recovery partition intact? If so, you can do a clean restore from there.
What COA do you have on your machine? It is perfectly legit to get a burned copy of the original IBM disks for the OS that your machine has the COA for.
    Let us know.

  • I bought a used iMac and I want to format and re-install the operating system however it didn't come w/operating system software.

I bought an iMac from a client and I'm concerned that the software that is on the system is not secure. I would like to remove everything and start with factory default programs and settings. The system is about 3-4 years old and there are no original operating system software discs.
How to I re-format the hard drive, and do I need to purchase an operating system for it?
    Thanks.

Your best bet is to call AppleCare and order a set of original OS X Install Discs, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the computer. If you don't know what version of OS X was on the system when it originally was purchased that is the best thing to do, otherwise you're shooting in the dark. The cost is going to be in the $30-40 range I believe.
You didn't complete your profile so we have no idea where you are located or anything about your system. You can use the following link to locate AppleCare's phone number in your country.

  • Formatting HD and re installing OSX SL

    Hello,
My MBP been busy over the past 2.5 years, the HD is full of junk from redundant apps installations.
I wish to format the HD and then install SnowL.
I do have TC backup at work and another TM backup at home.
    What are the steps?

Installing a fresh version of OSX and restoring everything is rarely required on OSX, and usually doesn't accomplish anything good.
If you have redundant apps, uninstall them.  Unlike Windoze, unless they have "helper" apps running, they won't cause any problems just being there, other than taking up some space.
About your only realistic alternative is to erase, reinstall OSX, then use Setup Assistant to transfer everything but apps.  That will get you a fresh copy of OSX and the default Apple apps; then you'll have to reinstall iLife, iWork, etc., and all 3rd-party apps.
See  Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard, especially the green "Second Chance" box.

Sorry for this one also.  Just finally searched the Inspector windoe in Compressor 4.  It is already there.

  • How do I de activate and re install LR5

Hi, I installed LR5 into a MacBook. I understand it can only be used in one computer. I have just bought an i-mac and I would like to de activate the first installation and re install the software into the new computer. How do I go about this?

If you have a single user license it can be used to have two activated installations, so you should be able to have it activated on both machines.
Normally to deactivate a product you open the Help menu in the top toolbar and choose Deactivate.

  • How change a printer IP address after installing OSX 10.6.8 on MacBook

I just installed OSX 10.6.8 on my MacBook and I need to change my printer's IP address. How do I change it?

Why do you think you need to change the IP address on the printer? Is the Mac using the same IP address or is it set to use a different IP address range (subnet)?
If the printer is connecting to a router then it most likely is obtaining its IP address (known as DHCP) from the router, which the Mac would also be doing by default. And if the printer is set to DHCP, turning it off for several minutes is sometimes enough for it to acquire a new IP address when it is turned back on.
If the printer has a static IP address set then it is often possible to change the IP address via the keyboard of the printer. If you can tell us what make and model you have, then someone who has this model can reply with the steps or we can refer to the manual for this model and provide you with the steps to take.

  • Do I really need to erase and re-install OSX?

Hello all, 2 days ago when downloading an update to the OSX Operating System there was an error in the installation, bundle ended up in trash. Now I get an error message with most of my third party software like MS Word, Entorage, Firefox that there is a "conflict in the shared library". Also, it looks like when I empty trash that update bundle is still there.
I tried repair disk permissions and AppleCare tried a few things but disk could not be repaired so the suggestion was transfer all critical files and erase and re-install OS.
Is this sound advice? Any thoughts?
    Much obliged in advance,

    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) Aluminum 17"

Tiger 10.4.6 is out on DVD for $114 @ Amazon if that helps.
TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is shipping now from MicroMat which is (I think) up there with Disc Warrior now with a 'few' more features, and regularly updated.
Do you not have a FW backup drive with room on it for an emergency and backup OS on it? That would be first thing I would be doing is backing up and having an emergency boot drive. Needed to find one for family member and it is either FW800 320GB $207 from OWC or slightly smaller.
No matter what, yes, transfer the files. Maybe even boot Tiger DVD, Disk Utility, Restore, and do a volume copy.
Only once have I seen Apple offer a CD with the combo updater ($25) unfortunately it was obsolete the next day due to bugs in USB support in 10.2.4/.5 and, didn't even come with a few other "goodies" like latest QuickTime and other nice or essential software updates.
I tend to run fsck before installs or updates, to run Applejack and clear out swap files and cache folders (which does seem to help, too) and maybe Disc Warrior and/or TTP4. And only then download the combined updates to another drive or partition. Not easy when it weighs in at 140MB, but delta updates seem more like "hit or miss."
I assume you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode or something.

  • MBP  17" running OS10.9.2....... how do I reformat it and then instal OS 10.6.8 on it.... have put in SL disc and pressed C when starting but I cannot install the OS

I have MBP 17" running OS 10.9.2....... I need to have OS 10.6.8 so I can contiue running Quicken 2006. I have this on my Mac Pro but am switching to iMac and hence will dedicate laptop to finances. I pressed option when starting and got disk utilities and erased the HD..... I put in the Snow Leopard disc and pressed C when starting but then when I try and install it shows icon of my HD and says I cannot start up from that disk....... I get the same thing when I insert the #1 instal disc that came with the computer. How do I instal OS 10.6.8 (if I go recovery mode it will insatll 10.9.2 which I don't want on this laptop.
    Thanks for any help.

The grey disk says OS 10.6...... i tried it as well as the SL disk with the C pressed....... what happens is that it directs you to agree etc and then asks where you want it installed..... the icon of the computer HD however has the yellow exclammation sign saying I cannot start from that disk.
    My super drive is working.......
Since I need to get to Quicken for taxes etc what I have done presently is formatted a LaCie rugged drive, partitioned it and when I attach that drive to the MBP and start up again I was able to install on the external drive....I am presently downloading the combo upgrade that will take me to 10.6.8
I still don't understand why it wont instal on the MBP I i know you cannot go earlier than what the machine shipped with but since this is 10.6 it should.I have a Mac Pro with one internal drive running 10.9.2 and the other 10.6.8 and I'd select the earlier system to start when I wanted to do my finances. I have upgraded to an iMac and hence cannot use that for acessing the earlier system
Interestingly, I partitioned another LaCie drive and was able when running 10.6.8 on Mac Pro to install on the external drive...... however when selecting that ext. HD for starting it never did restart with it , always restartd using the 10.9.2 system that was actiually on the other disc.

    powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Leon,
I agree with Sarah above, and here's why.
I don't think you have a 12" DVI, rather a plain old original 12". If you look carefully on:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/
the 12" was released 1/7/2003, meets the rest of your specs of 256 MB of RAM, and 867 MHz
the 12" DVI was released 9/16/2003 and all of those are 1 Ghz.
The former came with Mac OS X 10.2.3, the latter came with Mac OS X 10.2.7
    according to:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Since you mentioned 867 Mhz, I think you have the former. This means you need retail 10.2.6 or newer retail disks if you can't get the original disks.
The original disks do have things on it that the retail Mac OS X disks don't have, including software that was not included with Jaguar. Included software with Jaguar is on this PR page:
    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/jul/17jaguar.html
If your software is not listed there, it either came bundled with your machine, or you added it later.
Apple's Hardware Test which came with the original disks are also unique for each Mac model. So if you can't get the original disks, the only way to truly determine a hardware issue is to see if it happens after an erase and install with no third party devices connected.
