How do I Partition a Time Capsule's Drive?

I want to use my TC as both a backup and as a place to store my digital music and have it play through Apple TV. I bought a 1 terrabyte TC and want to split it into 2 500 gig partitions. I tried using disk utility but it didn't see the TC drive even though I was connected to it. I mean that I connected to it in finder and checked that. But disk utility did not see the drive anyway. I tried using the Airport utility but that just seems to erase.
Can I partition the drive?

The answer given in this discussion <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7159990&#7159990. was no.
What does happen when the backup is mounted is that it appears in Disk Utility as a disk image. That's not the same as the actual TC disk. See my post in this discussion regarding this: <http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7540393#7540393>

  • Can you partition the Time Capsule hard drive?

I would like to back up through AirportExtreme 2 different Macs with Time Machine
but obviously I would first need to partition the Time Capsule HD !
Is it possible and how would I go about this? I can't find no infos in the manual...
    Thanks for your help.

First you do not have to partition the drive to backup multiple computers. Each computer creates a separate file for the backup.
Second there is no way (currently) to partition the drive without taking the TC apart, removing the hard drive, putting it in an external drive enclosure, and partitioning it.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.
When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network.
How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?
Could I possibly connect via USB?
    No.

  • HT1178 How do I encrypt my Time Capsule hard drive?

I would like to secure my Time Capsule hard drive.  How do i go about encrypting it?

You cannot access the TC directly.. USB cannot be plugged into a computer.. It is for now and forevermore a network drive.
    Read Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
He covers how to create a DMG file which is a file that works as a virtual disk.
This has limitations although from your point of view it is probably good. Only one computer can access the dmg at a time. That includes multiple users on the same computer. So it is only mounted in one place and for one user.
You can also do the same thing with a sparsebundle although I am not sure if there is any advantage over dmg files.
    http://alex.seeholzer.de/2012/09/setting-up-smbafpcifs-network-drive-for-time-ma chine-on-osx-10-8-mountain-lion/
There is no need to make it usable by Time Machine. You simply use Sparsebundle as DMG.. it is just that it might co-exist with the TM backup better.
You can set fixed size to the sparsebundle.. or DMG files.
You can then mount the file on your computer.
Please note that storing files in encrypted format on the TC makes backing them up a pain.. figure out how you intend to do this.. Time Machine cannot backup network drives. And most backup software will have issues with encypted files.. unless you have them mounted in a way you can read.

  • How do I Partition my Time Capsule Drive ?

I have a 1-Terabyte Time Capsule (Not POSITIVE if its 3rd Gen or 4th Gen?) but It's less than 2 years old if that helps.
It serves as my Wireless Router in my house. My desktop backed up to it Once (I Think?) and my Laptop is not on Auto, but has 30 or 40 generations of backups out there.
Honestly I kind of just Forgot about having this big storage device out there until recently when (Big Project) my Laptop Drive sunk to 34 MEG (not GIG, MEG !!!) --- and I Panicked. I fiddled around a bit and got the TC to show as a Shared Drive in Finder. THANKFULLY I had NOT been using it in "Auto Backup Mode" because I still had over 600Gig Free and was able to dump MASSIVE Amounts of data files out there. From What I Read in the Info, TM or TC ?? will Continue to back up and Keep EVERY COPY until it runs out of space. Only THEN will it ever start deleting older records. (OK, Its GREAT for data security, but Not so Hot for a "Shared Drive") which is what this has now become for me. The Ability for ANY of my Computers to see and work on the same files has become a MAJOR Bonus thing --- and I'm Not feeling like giving that great feature up. (Ever Try and Move a 100 Gig's of Data with a FLASH DRIVE ?? Not EVER Again ;-)
So what appears to be my Solution would be to Partition the TC so that the backups live in a defined space (I CONTROL) I spent HOURS with the install disk, Utilities and out here trying to find a feature where you can Limit TC, but NADA, You Get Hourly Backup (like it or not) Daily, Weekly, Monthly and who knows, it might even do Yearly ?? But Your going to Get 'em No Matter What and it wont stop till it runs out of Real Estate. So I need to make it's Playground a bit smaller.
I can't get Disk Utility to "SEE" the TC ?? (I Thought I saw it last night ?? but Maybe Not ??) I have re-booted the Computer and Power Cycled the TC but It's Just NOT Going to Show. (Its Still in the Finder and I can Move Data IN & Out and Cross Platform---so its Working Fine, but It Wont Show in Disk Utility)
**OK This Is REALLY Strange** As I am Typing This, TC Just Kicked into a Backup. I Still have the Disk Utility open and the DATA FILE for TC is showing as a DISK?? but the Actual TC Drive is still NOT showing. (Specifically, the Datafile "Name of My Computer.SparseBundle" is showing as a Drive ??)
I got an External HDD and moved all the data OFF of the TC (The Info I saw on Partitioning Indicated that Wiping the Disk was Likely) The Only Thing Left out there is the backup file which Frankly I don't care about. Everything is Fine right now, so If I can Wipe, Partition, Set Back Up and start TC Backups again I will have everything I need.
**OH** I Know I can Hang another drive off of the TC but It's Not a Great option. it is S...L....O....W.... as Dirt going over USB (Really Apple?? USB ?? I have a 12 Year Old G5 Desktop that Not Only Has FireWire 400 but 800 as well----- USB ???)
    Appreciate your Efforts & Thanks

    OK--Post Script Time:
I Searched for this issue and Didn't find an answer, After Posting I got several suggestions that seemed pretty close to the mark, but None went far enough.
The General Consensus seems to be Partitioning is a "NO" via Any Conventional Means.
Alternatives Given we from the Exotic (and Slightly Scary) of Ripping Your TC Open and Yanking the Drive out and formatting it on another computer in some sort of "Housing" to Hacking Suggestions (I have Never had a good experience trying to Hack any of my stuff. I will allow the level of Knowledge needed exceeds mine? but there always seems to be that one Missed Step (Oops) which results in being worse off than before.
The Most reasonable (and Least Scary) option I saw was "Creating a Disk Image and Mounting it like it was a Disk" --- which if I had **ANY**CLUE*** how to do that and what the results would look & feel like I might try----So......
    Opinions on this option?
Experience with the TC with this done to it ?
and 5th Grader Step by Step Insturctions on HOW to do it ??
    Please??
    Thanks
PS: Forget the 5th Grader thing They Probably need LESS Help, Try "Retirement Home Instructions" ;-)

  • How do I maintain my Time Capsule hard drive?

How do I maintain the hard drive in my Time Capsule, say I wanted to maintain it with Disk Utility, Drive Genius, or Disk Warrior?
How should I connect to the TC from a MBP? I understand wireless or ethernet is not the way to do this.

apple says to never run disk utility on a time capsule disk and says when you reboot the time capsule it will check the file system. i tried to run disk utility on a sprase bundle and it trashed it and made it unusable. from other things i've read, it made it sound like if you need to run disk utility, or disk warrior, your supposed to remove the drive from the time capsule and connect it directly to the computer.

  • How do I format a Time Capsule (3TB) drive for serving as an external drive while replacing its TC function with a Seagate 4TB drive yet keeping the Apple TC's wifi functionality?

I have a hard line from my iMac to an Apple Time  3 TB Time Capsule with wifi. I wish to replace the drive potion of the Time Capsule with a new Seagate 4TB drive

Aside from changing the type of data you put on the Time Capsule, leave its drive as is. Its format is fixed.

  • How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

There is no difference in setup..
Only trouble.. be warned this is quite problematic. With Mavericks even more so.
    See Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Take particular note. The TC is not a NAS or file server.. it can be pressed into use as one.. but will suffer..
    1. Slow spin up of the disk and fast spin down. Causing streaming and library issues with itunes.
    2. iphoto is easily corrupted.. don't move it to a network drive at all.
    3. no backup.. the TC cannot back itself up.. it is designed as a backup target for Time Machine. but Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. and nor did apple build in a backup.. it was never needed. After all it is a backup.. not a file store.
    4. you cannot partition it. You will have issues with TM if you do store both data and TM backups on it.
    5. You can use USB drive plugged into the TC, and experience a new definition of pain and suffering.. well slow file transfer anyway.
    Good luck.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule with hotel wired internet

How do I use my Time Capsule as a wireless router on my hotel free internet ethernet cable?

    It may not be possible..
If they use a web access page, then there is no way you can set the TC to authenticate.. you must use the computer to authenticate and then use the computer to bridge to the TC for wireless clients to access.
Look up instructions on using ICS (internet connection sharing) in the Mac.
    eg for 10.6.8 http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6589
    eg http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10740
Of course if there is no login then you could just use it.. but I doubt you would be asking if it just worked.

  • How do I use the time capsule to share itunes music between multiple apple devices? Also, is it possible to control the music on one device using another, and how do you set this up?

How do I use the time capsule to share itunes music between multiple apple devices? Also, is it possible to control the music on one device using another, and how do you set this up?

unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

  • How do I connet my time capsule to a new network

    Hey,
I have a Time Capsule, which is set up to my old wifi. Now I have moved, and my Macbook works with the new wifi, but I can't connet my Time Capsule, my computer can't even find it. How do I setup my time capsule to the new wifi?
    Please help me.....

The best way is to plug the TC by ethernet to main router in the new place. Reset it to factory.. see instructions and then it will appear in your airport utility.
You cannot connect to two different wifi signals at the same time.. if you "join the wireless" the TC will perform poorly.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

Just started with iinet naked ADSL, can locate/connect my time capsule - help please

Bob is ok as a modem.. are you using voip?? If not bridge the bob and use PPPoE client in the TC..
Or use Bob as a full modem router and bridge the TC.. either setup is much of a muchness.

  • How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive

How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive? Is this even possible? I had a friend tell me it woudl be a good set up to get a time capsule with my Macbook Air to use as a gigantic external hard drive but then was unbale to wlak me through the setup after I bought the equipment. Any suggestions?

It depends on what you already have equipment wise..
    Just bridge the TC..
I cannot walk you through it either if you use v6 airport utility.. due to my refusing to run Lion until it gets network issues sorted.
Download and run the real utility http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Go to manual setup..
    Internet tab
Connection sharing.. select off bridge mode in the drop down box.
You can then if you like turn off wireless under airport wireless.. The TC is now a plain network client with hard disk.
Personally I would keep the wireless on but sort the channels manually if you already have a wireless AP or router.

  • I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.
