How do I partition an external HD without formatting it or deleting data on it?

I'm using OSX Lion and have an external HD, which is about 40% full. I'd like to add a partition without reformatting it or deleting data if that's possible.
Anyone know how to do this? I've opened up Disk Utility and clicked on the Partition tab and have tried to use the re-size corner to change the size of the current partition, but it is greyed out and I can't sem to get it to work.
Any thoughts on how do to this? Right now my drive is one big partition. I'd like to divide it into two partitions, again, without deleting data if I can avoid it.
Thanks!

Very possible. However, requires that the HD's formatted as OS X Extended, has the GUID partitioning scheme, and has journaling enabled. If those conditions are met, Disk Utility will do it.

  • How do I partition my external hard drive without losing data?

How do I partition my external hard drive without losing the data already on it? I've been using it with Time Machine on my old computer, but want to use it as a regular drag-and-drop type back up on my new computer. Is there any way to basically split the hard drive so I can still access the Time Machine backups on my old computer, but also be able to use it with my new mac? Thanks!

If you reformat the drive all data is lost.
The only way to save the data is to copy it somewhere else during the reformat.
Drag & drop will not backup things correctly.
I suggest you set up partition for each Mac and then point Time Machine to each of the partition for each of the Macs.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

Hello everyone, how can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

    OK. Start with:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select one of the two partitions, preferably the first one, change the Format type: to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • How Do I partition an external hard drive using disk utility?

I have a 500 GB external hard drive that I want to set up so that half the space is for Time Machine backup and the other half as a simple flash drive that will be compatible with all types of computer operating systems?

A terrible idea. Never use a backup drive for anything but a backup drive. Get another drive for experimenting.
You can partition an external drive no differently than an internal drive.
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions desired from the drop down. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • How can I partition an external hard drive with data in it? When I select the drive, the partition option is grayed out.

I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out.  I can't add a a partition for some reason.  When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either.  I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
    Thanks!
    Luis

Select the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive into NTFC and Mac OS Extended Journaled?

I brought a 1tb external hard drive from Western Digital. It currently have one partition which is Mac OS X (Journaled). I want to have two partition, one Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and one NTFC for Windows. When I try to choose 2 partition and choose a partition type, I only get the following choices:
    1. Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    2. Mac OS X Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled)
    3. MS-DOS (FAT)
    4. ExFAT
    5. Free Space
I don't want to use MS-DOS (FAT) because I am limited to only 32gb of space and I need plenty of space for Windows files.

Assuming that  entire drive is GUID and you keep the existing journaled partition.
Make a second partition that is exFAT (more storage ability than FAT) using DU.
Then mount the drive on a Windows 7 and reformat that exFAT as NTFS.  But remember that Mac can read and write exFAT natively, but cannot write NTFS without special software.  Perhaps exFAT is what you want.
But more the the point: is the journaled partition used as a backup device?  If it is, I would leave that drive alone as a backup drive and use a second device for "data only" sharing between types.

  • How do I partition an external HD?

Ok, I know this is probably an easy question but I have never done it before and was hoping to get some guidance.
I currently have a PowerBook G4 with an 80 GB HD, 1 GB RAM, SuperDrive, etc. I am moving abroad and plan on selling my PowerBook but would like to buy a new one when I return and have it be pretty much the same that I have now.
My plan was to buy a external HD, partition it into two drives. On one drive create an exact copy of my current system (using SuperDuper or something similar) and then on the other partition move over all my files (mp3's, pictures, etc) manually (just to play it safe).
My question is if this sounds reasonable to everyone, how easy it will be to transfer over my files and settings once I buy a new PowerBook and any other advice.
I am new to Macs and doing everything I described above so all advice is welcome.
    Thank You

It's a reasonable plan if it fits your particular needs. You can partition the drive using Disk Utility. The procdure that I recommend is as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Repeat Steps 4-6 for each partition you create.
You can clone your hard drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder unless it's already open.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive or if you cannot format it.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • How to best partition an external drive for my purposes?

    Hello, please help,
I've just bought a Western Digital 'My Passport' 320Gb USB (no firewire) portable external harddrive for backing up my data prior to iMac repair.
I also plan to totally wipe my PPC iMac and reinstall it with Leopard.
I erased the external HD, zeroing out the data from it's previous owner, and reformatted it as Mac OS Extended (not journaled).
Now I realise that it might be even more useful than I'd imagined.
I'd now like to partition it so I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable copy of my entire iMac while using the rest of the drive as a separate partition for just backing up data.
Ideally I want to be able to use the drive on both Intel and PPC Macs and even PCs, is this possible? How should I format the drive to achieve this?
I've heard I should format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) HFS+, what ever that is
I'm currently running OS 10.4.11 but plan to buy Leopard and install that after the wipe.

I've just bought a Western Digital 'My Passport' 320Gb USB (no firewire)

For what you want to do, there is a mismatch between your PPC computer and the external drive that you bought.
With a few exceptions, a PPC Mac requires a firewire external drive for booting and will not boot from a USB drive, regardless of which OS is installed and regardless of the partition scheme and volume format on the drive. I also have an iMac G5, and mine will not boot from USB.
If you do exchange your drive for a firewire drive, do not get another Western Digital model to use with your G5 - many external WD firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. See [this page|http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787]
If you want to keep your present USB drive, you can still partition it with one partition for a backup clone and another for "other stuff". With respect to immediate use for recovering your stuff after a clean Leopard install on the HD, I think that Migration Assistant will still work, though I haven't tried this. As for the future, the problems with a clone not being bootable are 1) You can't test it to see if it works OK, and 2) If you do need to restore from it you'd need to boot from "somewhere else" - I think you could boot from an install disk and use Disk Utility's Restore feature to clone it back.
With regard to PC access, a PPC mac normally requires an Apple Partition Map partition scheme on the drive for booting, and such a scheme does not allow for the FAT32 volume format that is readable by PCs. However in this case since your PPC mac can't boot from it anyway, you could partition the drive as GUID. This would allow the main volume to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the nonbootable clone, and would allow the extra volume to be formatted as FAT32. If you eventually got an Intel Mac, a clone from it to the main volume would also then be bootable.
But what I would do, if feasible, is exchange the USB drive and get a non-WD firewire drive instead.

  • How do I partition an external hard drive?

I have recently purchased a Buffalo 1TB hard drive. I now want to partition it so I have 400GB for  TimeMachine backup, 100GB for transferring 'stuff' between my Mac and my husband's Windows desktop, and 500GB  for storing iPhoto pictures. How do I go about partitioning the drive and what considerations are there? I have a MAcBook Pro running Lion. Thanks!

400GB is very little for a TM backup -- a rule of thumb is a minimum of twice the capacity of the drive you're backing up. So unless your internal drive is only 200GB or less, 400GB isn't enough for TM.
In addition, consider that if you store your iPhoto library on an external drive because it's too big for your internal, you also need to maintain an up-to-date backup of the iPhoto library on a *second* external drive. If you don't, and the external drive fails, your pictures will be gone. In most cases, it's a better strategy to upgrade your internal drive to whatever capacity will hold everything you want to save, instead of spreading your primary storage over multiple discs and having to have multiple backup discs. You're much less likely to leave irreplaceable data un-backed-up if you don't have to remember which backups are where and when they were last updated. A 1TB internal drive, a 2TB external TM backup drive, and a 32GB flash drive for data transfer might serve your needs considerably better than what you've planned.

  • Can I partition an external drive without erasing data?

    Can I do this?
Or do I need to have partitioned the drive to begin with in order to not lose my data?
I need it to be a GUID partition map for booting...

I need it to be a GUID partition map for booting
That is a common misunderstanding. An Intel Mac will boot from a disk partitioned with the Apple Partition Map. What you can't do without GUID is use the Apple Installer (which is used for e.g. System Upgrades).

  • Changing the size of partitions on external drive without losing data

Can this be done using Leopard ? I wanted to increase the size of the parttion for my MacBook Pro and reduce it for my daughter's MacBook partition on the external back up drive.

I am sure someone will have a bright idea, but you will lose data using Disk Utility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306496
I think that the second volume is the one that has to be erased (the first one is expanding into its space). You can't increase the last partition.
