How do I permanently crop my photos (destructive edit) ?

I like how Lightroom leaves my original photo intact, and allows me to reverse all edits.  However, sometimes I know I will not need to preserve the entire original file as shot.  For example, I have a series of bird images where, if one can imagine the photo is divided into a 3 x 3 grid, and the bird is in the center square only.  The rest of the photo is wasted space and therefore each of these images is taking up 8 times as much space on my hard drive as the image I need would.  Is there a way to permanently crop the original photo, cutting out the unimportant part and leaving only my subject?  Especially if some of these are RAW files, they can take up quite a bit of space.

+1 vote.. There really is NO way to substantially reduce raw file size, so you either have to convert to non-raw format (jpeg/lossy-dng) and lose the raws, or get more space, if you want to keep them I mean. Note: the latest version of NX2 supports removing the embedded jpeg (in bulk) if that would help. That'll cut a few megabytes from every raw.

how do I permanently delete a photo album?

    Hi xanadu711,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Was the photo album created on the iPhone or synced from iTunes?
If the album was synced using iTunes, follow these instructions to remove it:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4236
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    Click Apply.
If the photo album was created on the iPhone, follow these instructions on page 73 of the iPhone User Guide to remove it:

My child took photos that should not be on the internet or posted and I have deleted them from the phone....but they are still seen in My Photo Stream. How can I permanently delete these photos from the phone?

  • How can I automatically crop a photo based on its content (a black border)?

    I scanned hundred of negatives.
The scanner produced .jpg files.  Most of the scanned images show the negatives holder to one side as a black border.  The black border is thicker or thinner depending on the photo.
    Please see pictures attached.
Is there a way to automate the detection of such a border and remove it by cropping the photo?  Ideally I would like the processing to only remove the thickness that is required to keep the photo unaltered as much as possible.
I have Photoshop 12 and I know about Actions.  I just don't know how to tell the engine to only crop if it is required, and by how much.
This could save me days of manual work.  Thankyou.
    Environment Information:
    ·  I am running Photoshop 12.1 *64 bit
    ·  Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    ·  Amount of installed RAM: 6GB
    ·       Scanner:  Canon CanoScan 8800F
    ·  Amount of free disk space:
                C:\ - OS and Software disk - Total size:139GB showing 20GB free
                G:\ - Data disk - Total size:1.81 TB showing 437GB free
    ·  Make/Model of Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Thank you miss marple for your Image>Canvas Size... suggestion.  I used it to implement a semi automated process.
I programmed a couple of actions:
    - one to trim all sides by 7 pixels
    - one to trim the top side by 7 pixles
Then I assigned a shortcut key to each action.
Since I have to open each photo individually anyway to remove larger scratches (see my other post), it is easy to hit a couple of keyboard keys to trigger the relevant 'border removal' action.
The main thing is that in 95% of cases I don't have to use the mouse to fix the borders, but I use keyboard keys only.  It is a real time saver.

  • How do I permanently delete a photo off the iphone 5 so that it can not be recovered?

I want to permanently delete a photo from an iphone 5 so that it can not be recovered?  How can I do this?

You can perform an erase all contents and settings direct on the iPhone which is a secure erase of everything except iOS and the included apps and not restore your iPhone from the backup. Start as new with no existing data or settings whatsover that is currently available on the iPhone.
If this photo has been deleted from the Camera Roll, when updating the iPhone's backup that deleted photo will not be included.

  • How do I permanently save my photos from my iPhone 5 to free up storage on the phone

I want to permanently save my photos from my I phone 5. How do I do that so I can delete them off my phone to free up storage?

You can transfer them to a computer as described in iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
Another option is a 3rd party service such as Flickr
Apple has announced that iOS 8 will have an improvement that will also help: https://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/photos/

  • How can I change my Profile photo or edit the thumbnail?

QuestionHow can I change my Profile photo or edit the thumbnail?
AnswerThere are a couple of different ways to change your profile photo or thumbnail image on Tagged.
Here's a quick How-to video that shows you how to change your profile photo
If you wish to change your profile photo, follow the instructions listed below:
Hover your mouse over 'More' in the top Nav bar and select Photos.
To use one of your previously uploaded photos as your profile photo, place the cursor over the photo you wish to use, and click the small green “#1” box when it appears
If you wish to use a new image as your profile photo, upload the image to your photo gallery, and then click the small green “#1” box on the photo
If you are viewing one of your photos individually, you can also set it as your profile photo by hovering over it and clicking the same green "#1" button.  You may also edit the caption and comment on your photo in this view
You can also change your profile photo by doing the following:
On the Navigation bar click Profile and select the Edit Profile link to the left of your Profile picture.
To upload a photo locally from your computer, click the “Browse” button, select the image you wish you use, and then click “Upload”.
To upload a photo using an image URL address, click the “Add from image URL” link, paste the URL address into the field, and click “Add Photo”.
To use a photo from your gallery, click the “Use one of my photos” link to open a thumbnail gallery of your uploaded images.  Click on a thumbnail to set that image as your profile photo.
After selecting a photo, you can alter its thumbnail by the marquee box by dragging the “anchor” points of the box.  When you are finished, click "Save Thumbnail"

HELP! I was fooling around with my profile pic and selected and saved a cropped thumbnail. I hate it, and I haven't been able to figure out how to return my thumbnail to just a mini-version of my full profile pic. I've even re-up-loaded a copy of the original photo, with a different file name, but Tagged automatically crops it to the same thumbnail.  Is there any way to return my thumbnail to just a mini-version of my whole pic?  Thanks for your help :~)

  • How can you PERMANENTLY change a photo title?

I know how to change the title of my photos in iPhoto (by clicking on the title of the image or changing it in the information panel). But when I copy the image to another place--for example, dragging it to my desktop or onto a USB stick--the original title, the one with just numbers, appears and the new title is lost. If I change the title on the icon of the desktop image and then re-import it into iPhoto, I get the new title, but there must be an easier way than moving all my photos to my desktop and then moving them back into iPhoto and erasing the original iPhoto photos.

The trick is not to drag it to the desktop, but instead, use the File -> Export command. In the resulting dialogue set the Kind: to jpeg and then tick the box at 'Title and Keywords' and then complete the export. iPhoto will make a copy of your pic with the title as filename, including any description and keywords you may have added.
By way of explanation: iPhoto preserves your Original file, no matter what. Changing the filename is a change to the file and would require a modified version. Obviously this would be very expensive in terms of Hard Drive space, so iPhoto does not rename the file. Further, filenames are irrelevant in iPhoto as cameras can produce hundreds of files with the same name. SO iPhoto does not rely on them as an identifier.
Alternatively, some folks rename their file prior to importing to iPhoto. To do tthis use Image capture (in your Apps folder) to move the pics to a folder on the desktop then use a batch file renaming utility such as Name Mangler to rename the files and then import to iPhoto.

  • Is there a way to eliminate black margins from a cropped digital photo

I often crop my photos when editing.  However, if I remove a large portion of the photo and view them in iPhoto, there are usually large black margins.  Is there a way to hide or eliminate these borders?

I am embarrassed to say I tried to find one and couldn't.  The only explanation I can think of is that I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 and perhaps that made a difference.
Thank you so much for trying to help.  If and when it ever occurs again, I'll note the specifics.

  • How do I permanently save changes to photos?

The IOS 7 photo edit allows me to revert to the original photos after edits, which would be ok, if it didn't use the original when interfacing with other apps or when sending. For example, I cropped a lot of photos and then accessed the photos with my contacts app. The original unedited or uncropped photo showsl, not the edited or cropped photo. I searched for hours trying to find any comments on this topic. Nothing! Maybe everyone is excited about the new photo organization and forgot the basics. What good are editing features if the changes are not saved or accessible to other apps or when trying to send out the edited version?
I could find any way on Apple site or any on Google that tells me how to disable this feature or how to make changes to my photos permanent. Basically, what this means to me is the editing features are only useful if viewing from the photo app and not any other app or when trying to use the edited version.

The interface to share photos between your apps is the camera Roll. So to make your iPhoto edits visible to other apps on your iPad, share your edited version to the Camera Roll, when you are done with editing. If you have iPhoto on your iPad, you can save to the Camera Roll like this:
    From: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/ipad/1.1/#blnkee26bc1f
Save photos to the Camera Roll on your device
Tap one or more photos and tap
    Tap Camera Roll.
Confirm or change the photos you want to share:
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
    Tap Camera Roll.
To use your photo in another app, open the app and select the Camera Roll album.

  • After I have cropped a photo how do I save it.  Something is wrong, my computer will not let me close photoshop

I cropped a photo and saved it as a TIFF.  I can not close down photo shop or burn the photo to a disk.  How do I save the photo once I crop it?

Use the menu option File>Save As. When you close photoshop, it should have asked you if you want to save the file. If photoshop does not ask you and refuses to close, odds are something else is wrong.
First try resetting the preferences. (ctrl-alt-shift for windows and cmd-opt-shift for mac as you start photoshop) If done right it will ask you if you want to reset the preferences.
Next thing to do is uninstalling then reinstalling photoshop.
If that still does not help, then it may be time to contact Adobe.

  • In PSE11, how do I "crop" a photo into a circle?

I would greatly appreciate step-by-step instruction on how to "crop" a photo into a circle in PSE11.
I've created an invitation for my daughters 1st birthday and I want to add a circular photo of her on the invite, but I can't seem to figure it out.
I understand that I can't technically "crop" it but I need the image to appear to be circular by using the transparency feature.
    Again, I need a step-by-step as I'm still new to PSE11...
    Thank you!

I'm curious as to why reply#1 didn't work. That is basic PSE stuff. Was the selection still active with marching ants as asked in reply#3? Perhaps somehow the selection was deleted before doing the inverse.
If you do get that to work, note that you first must convert the picture to a "regular" layer by renaming it from "Background" to anything else. Then the deleted portion will be replaced by transparency. If you do the delete on the Background layer the deleted portion is simply replaced by the color defined in the background color chip on the toolbar.

  • How do I crop finished photo - PS CS 4?

Hello - I've finished a photo and have flattened all the layers, and even unlocked the new flattened layer, and now I want to crop this photo, but when I go to Image, the crop feature is grayed out - how do I crop away unwanted portions of this photo? Am running photoshop CS 4.
    Thanks in advance.

Right, you should make a selection first, and then the Image > Crop command is available:)

  • How do I permanently delete photos or text messages?

How do I permanently delete photos or text messages?

    diesel,
When I look for an answer to a problem, especially a question that might already be answered, it's because: 1) I need an answer right away, and might not be able to wait a few hours or days for someone to respond, 2) I often don't know if a feature or problem was there from the early iPhones or is brand new, so my first thought is not "that answer is old, therefore irrelevant."
I know, "read the User's Guide." You sound like Mrs. Suggs, my third grade teacher. If I had taken up someone's time by posting a new question, I get the feeling you would have told me "Don't ask questions there are already answers to." But thank you for your help.
