How do I permanently delete software?

Hello,
Having recently updated to Lion my Microsft Office 2004 has stopped working, I now understand from reading other posts that it is not compatible. However could someone tell me how to delete the software off my imac? There is no need to keep it on if not functioning. Also I am looking for some advise as to what I can use instead of Office, I don't want to shed out a fortune on the latest verion as I only use it now and again to view documents and write the odd letter.
When I have deleted software downloads before they still seem to be on the system. - is there an 'uninstall' option.
I look forward to hearing from you...

Correct - the uninstaller is PPC as well, if fact I tried it under Snow Leopard and it did naff all as well!
Anyway - as you say - bin the Office Folder (and the MS Autoupdate app if that's in the Application folder as well.
Plus:
-  Office installs fonts in every *user* ~/Library/ folder (77 IIRC) - these can be binned
- The /Library/Application Support/ folder has a Microsoft folder - this can be pruned as well ( I have Silverlight but the rest I binned)
- The Microsoft folder in your Documents folder can be binned.
If you the do a spotlight search on Microsoft and pick up the rest (for example there is a .mdimported file which is used to enable spotlight to read Entourage mails )
If you want to be really thorough you can open console and go through the logs to delete any MS related.
As for replacement I eventually opted for iWork as the cost of upgrading 4 Macs to Office (well 3 actually as I'm stuck on Tiger on one of them ) was quite high and I could get a family pack for iWork at GBP 85 (I couldn't use the App store which would have been even cheaper due to the Tiger system ). However my needs are modest so YMMV. If you are into Excel Macros, VB or other "sophistications" you may want to consider Office 2011 which seems to play well with Lion. Plus with iWork on the Lion systems I get the new Autosave/Versions toys to play with.
Regards,
Shawn

  • How can I permanently delete subfolders in email Trash?

I have been getting duplicate email messages in one of my email folders for several weeks.  I think it started when I upgraded to OS X 10.6.6.  I have RoadRunner as a mail server and have not had this problem before on either my iMac or a previous PC.  I read many many support messages regarding duplicate email messages from this board and tried many of the hopeful fixes but none of them worked on a permanent basis.
I do not have any other electronic machines that hold or try to access my email.  I did, however just order a new laptop and would really like to get the duplication problem fixed before I receive the new computer.
I have 2 email addresses on one server (RoadRunner).  They each have their own folder in Mail Inbox,  one is labeled Personal and the other is labeled Business.  I can send and receive email from my Personal address but I can only RECEIVE mail from my Business address.  I receive the duplicate messages in my Business Inbox folder.
I have deleted messages only to see them reappear the next time I open the folder.  Some of the 'fixes'  I tried caused me to have 3 or 4 duplications.  I noticed that all the instances of a message and its duplications would go to the Trash folder when I used the delete feature.   My Trash Folder also has 2  subfolders, one for Personal and one for Business.  I noticed that when I try to drag a deleted message from the Trash/Business folder it would not allow itself to be placed back in the Inbox/Business folder.  But when I dragged the deleted message from the main Trash Folder to the Inbox/Business folder it would allow itself to be deposited.  So, I deleted the subfolders under the Trash Folder and all seemed to be great.  No more duplicated.  But - the subfolders keep reappearing when I reopen mail.  I have deleted the subfolders each time, but they won't stay deleted.  How do I permanently delete the Trash subfolders?

You are seeing an intentional but strange feature of GMail...  nothing is ever deleted, and instead remains forever in All Mail.  You probably want to just hide All Mail from Mail, so that you don't have to see it and don't have all those messages syncing back to your Mac.  See Hiding GMail’s “All Mail” from Apple Mail.  There has been one change on GMail since I wrote that, though...  you no longer have to go to Labs and turn on Advanced IMAP.

They are not taking up storage space.  Apple knows you installed them at one time (="purchased", whether you paid money or not), and merely keeps a list so that if you wish to reinstall any of them on this or a future device, you can.  This is useful if maybe you deleted them due to space constraints, and now have a device with more memory and wish to reinstall.
It's also useful for taking a trip down Memory Lane looking at all the useless apps you installed once then immediately deleted once you realized they were total garbage ...

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

I have a MacBook Air and I use "Notes" when I delete a folder it comes back. How do I permanently delete it?

it all depends on what's running in the macbook air that causes it to heat up.
open activity monitor - change my processes to all processes - and on the %CPU, click it twice and see what running using 10% and above in the %CPU section.
highlight anything that are using high CPU percentage and hit quit process.  see if that brings the temperature back down to normal.
screenshot below is my activity monitor - have a look at it - nothing over 10% on the %CPU section.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • How can I permanently delete tracking cookies?

I was alarmed to read the series in the series in the Wall Street Journal ( www.wsj.com/wtk ) about flash cookies, trackers, and beacons. I had always set my preferences (in Firefox) to not accept cookies, changing that only when I came to a site that required cookies (like Facebook), but then choosing the option to not accept 3rd-party cookies, changing my preferences after the visit, and deleting cookies.
I installed the add-ons suggested by the WSJ and on this website (Adblock Plus, Better Privacy, Ghostery, PrivacyChoice TrackerWater, and Taco. There is nothing in my Library>Preferences>Macromedia file. I visited the Adobe website and followed their instructions to delete flash cookies. Yet I cannot get rid of the cookies!
I tried this experiment: when not connected to the internet, with cookies turned off, I deleted all cookies, closed Firefox, and lo and behold, 150 cookies (yes, I counted them) had re-created themselves!
How can I get rid of them permanently? Please don't give me any pablum about them being harmless, they help to streamline the ads being shown to me, etc. etc. I don't care about that. This is MY computer and I do not want anyone installing anything on it! It irks me that deleting cookies deletes the useful cookies -- cookies that I would chose to keep -- but keeps all these other ones.
Please, if anyone knows, how can I permanently delete these cookies?

Get the Add-on NoScript for Firefox.
    http://noscript.net/
In addition, I always empty all cookies after a browsing session or at the end of the day. The worst is I have to log back in to some sites. You can't permanently eliminate the possibility of picking up a tracking cookie, but you can get rid of them if you pick one up. NoScript minimizes the chances of getting one, since you only allow the minimum scripts for a site to function. I suggest you start at the NS site and read about it. There's also a support forum which needs no registration. I won't have a lot of time today to explain much more.
Here what you do to completely eliminate Flash cookies. This works.
    +"Delete your ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia folder so you're starting from a clean, shared-object-free, slate.+
+Next, in your web browser visit http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_man ager07.html and under the Global Privacy Settings, click the button labeled "always deny" then "confirm" to prevent Flash from watching you through your webcam or listening to you over the computer's microphone. Technically speaking this isn't necessary, but it seems like a prudent move if you don't like the idea of web sites accessing these resources. Don't bother changing anything else in the Settings Manager because the other stuff pretty much involves what and how much can get saved on your computer, and we're going to answer those questions entirely different means.+
+Now navigate in the Finder back to your ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia folder and and recursively lock every file and folder inside it. This should include macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys/settings.sol, macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys, macromedia.com/support/flashplayer, macromedia.com/support, macromedia.com/#SharedObjects/<random letters and numbers>, macromedia.com/#SharedObjects, and finally the macromedia.com folder itself.+
    +That's it!+
+The cool thing about this is that Flash is convinced it can store this crap so everything works, but nothing is actually remembered by Flash. Or at least nothing is remembered between browser sessions. Flash apparently never tells sites attempting to store stuff that, even though storing is enabled, it doesn't actually work and nothing gets stored."+

I called Apple and spoke with a customer service representative regarding this issue. I was given the two things to try, and if they don't work, I was told I can call back in:
    1. Go to iCloud.com and look at the advanced options. Since Photos can be deleted here, the representative thought there may be an option to remove songs here as well.
    2. Go into the library that has the songs that were deleted and click Update iTunes match.
I tried #1--this didn't resolve the issue, as there is no option to remove songs this way. I can't try #2 right now since I'm at work, but if anybody else with this issue can try that step it can help us get the ball rolling on it. After I try that, I'll call Apple back to discuss this further.

  • How do I permanently delete a movie I downloaded from my itunes account?

I deleted a movie that I downloaded. Then when I signed in on a different computer the movie was there again. How can I permanently delete it from my account?

    Hi, sophiaskoub.
Thank you for the question.  The most common cause for this is having Automatic Downloads enabled on the secondary computer.  See the first article on how to disable this feature.  The other attached articles cover how to delete media from iTunes and hiding any purchases that have been made.

  • How do I permanently delete a contact?

How do I permanently delete a contact? I've deleted in my contacts and his number still appears when I go to type a new message.

To completely remove it, you would have to restore your phone.
I've read in other threads that in due time, the number will eventually get deleted.
A work around is to use symbols or just other letters for that number, so that way when you type the name it won't show up.

how can I permanently delete a song from itunes

If you are wanting to delete a song from iTunes 11.0.1 you can select the song or album (or selected different songs by holding "down command"), once you have selected those songs. Hold down the "option/alt" + "command"  keys and then right click on the hightlighted song/s or album and go to "delete".
NB The delete option wil not appear when you normally right click on a song/file. But if you hold down "option/alt" + "command" the "delete" selection will appear.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1349 How do I permanently delete crap that my kids have downloaded onto my itunes?

How do I permanently delete crap that my kids have downloaded onto my itunes? It's synced with my phone now too. I just want to listen to the albums I've purchased and the cds I've downloaded. Help. Please.

When you delete one or more of your purchases from your library you should get an option to Hide purchases from iTunes in the Cloud. Selecting this option should prevent the items from appearing as cloud links or in the purchased section of the iTunes Store, however should you later change your mind you can visit your account and use the Manage hidden purchases link to restore them.
