How do I play my MTS (AVCHD) files on my TV?

I have read alot bout media players like Roku and WDTVbut it appears that almost every piece of hardware out there does not support .MTS (AVCHD) files. Which is insane to think Canon sells HD camcorders that saves in a format that isn't supported anywhere...Maybe they should make their own Smart TV or media player...of course that's beside the point.
Anyway, from my cursory research, it seems there are only a few options:
1---Convert my .MTS files to some file that's readable on a media player or Smart TV
2---Connect my laptop to my TV with VGA cable or WiDi
3---Use the PLEX channel on Roku
So far PLEX seems like the easiest solution, but I wanted to get the forum's opinion. My main concern is that converting/transcoding video into new formats will lose HD quality. Similarly, I'm concerned that streaming my videos on TV through WiDi does not provide the same HD experience.  With that being said, would PLEX be any better that those other options?
More concise:  How do I play my home movies on my TV retaining the highest HD quality?

Well ,first you should know , if you compress your video, no matter what format you convert to , it will defenitely has the quality loss, even you will not notice by your eyes. But you can improve it manually. During your conversion , (whatever converter app you use), it may have the option to let you imporve the Bitrate and Frame rate. That two will help you improve the quality. But try to keep the balance between those two or you will get some blurred video.

  • Bizarre problem trying to import .MTS (AVCHD) files into PSE7 Organizer

    Hi
    b Summary of problem:
    *I recently upgraded to PSE 7 / PRE 7
*I am trying to import .MTS (AVCHD) files into the PSE7 Organizer
*I get a "...did not contain any supported file types..." error on attempted import
    b HOWEVER...
*I can edit same footage in PRE7
*This footage is automatically added to the Organizer
*I can play this footage in the PSE7 organizer but generating thumbnails takes ages
*Camera: Sony HDR SR12 producing .MTS files (full 1920x1080i HD)
    *PC: Intel Core i7 940 CPU, 6GB RAM, RADEON HD 4870 512MB
    *OS: Vista 64 bit
    b Detail:
I have recently upgraded my PRE/PSE bundle to ver 7 primarily because the new version of PRE boasts support for AVCHD.
Having installed the new software I quickly tried editing footage in PRE7 with video taken on my Sony HDR SR12 camera (footage taken in full 1920x1080i HD) and it works! Hoorah! I can now finally edit AVCHD footage in it's native format using PRE. Thank you Adobe!
But my joy was very shortlived because when I tried to import some other footage from the same batch into my PSE7 Video Catalog it wouldn't work. I got a pop up box containing the following error:
i "Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in the catalog."
Under this message is a list of the files that I tried to import. Next to each one there is a reason (it's the same reason for each clip):
i "Reason: The file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the Organizer."
To import files I use the following method: File / Get Photos and Videos / From Files and Folders
HOWEVER, the files that I imported directly into PRE7 in order to edit them have (surprise, surprise!) automatically been added PSE7 Organizer's Catalog. It takes a quite a while to generate a thumbnail for each clip but it does eventually do it and when it does I can play that footage in PSE7.
Just in case you're confused by this stage... If I try and manually add files to the PSE7 Organizer it doesn't work BUT if I edit that footage in PRE7 and then load the PSE7 Organizer I see the footage has been automatically added. This makes no sense whatsoever!
Am I doing something really stupid here? Why oh why will the PSE7 Organizer not import .MTS (AVCHD) files?!
NB: While searching for a solution to this problem I have, thanks to this Forum, found out about the K-Lite Codec Pack. I downloaded and installed the Basic pack v4.4.5 and now I can, at least, play my .MTS video files in Windows Media Player... I wish I had found out about that a couple of months ago because it would have saved me from buying Cyberlink PowerDVD 8!
Please someone help before I lose the plot.
    Thanks

    Hi
I'd just like to add an update to this post.
    b Summary:
*K-Lite Codec Pack clashes with Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software
*Analysis of video in Sony's PMB is well worth doing!
*You can Drag and Drop clips from Sony's PMB into PRE7
    b Detail:
As you've probably gathered I have now settled on using Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) to Catalog all my video. Sorry Adobe to talk about someone elses product but the Adobe Organizer just can't cope with AVCHD footage no matter how you manage to import it! It's far too sluggish and my PC has an Intel Core i7 940 CPU with 6GB RAM and a 10,000 RPM HDD!
Anyway, in my first post you'll have read me raving about the K-Lite Codec Pack but sadly I've had to uninstall it because it kept on causing PMB to crash. PMB runs much smoother and quicker WITHOUT that codec pack. Something about it clashed with PMB. The once agile PMB became sluggish and unresponsive.
Having now removed the codec pack PMB is back to being agile and generaly lovely.
To view AVCHD footage outside of PMB I have reverted to using Cyberlink's PowerDVD 8 - there's always a pregnant pause between double-clicking on the clip and it playing but that's the only drawback.
If you are going to use Sony's PMB for cataloging your video collection (and I recommend you do so BUT only if you have AVCHD footage - otherwise stick to Adobe's Organiser) then I can fully recommend "Analyzing" all of your footage. This takes time and a bit of patience because it kept stopping for no apparent reason but would readily start up again (without having to do anything else) BUT once it's done it'll reward you with the following:
*Filter on any combination of Scenery, People, Smiles - e.g. with a click of a button you can isolate footage that contains smiles, etc
*Face Search - if you select some or all of the footage in the right-hand pane it will then put a small thumbnail for all of the different faces in that selected footage in the bottom "Face Search" pane. If you then click on one of those thumbnails it will jump to the clip(s) that contain that face and grey out all the other clips
*Expand Videos - This tool is brilliant! In normal viewing mode you get a thumbnail of the video whether you're in Folder view, Calender view or Detail List view. If, however, you select "Expand Videos" from the tool bar it will show you a series of frames contained within that clip. You can choose from "Highlights" or various regular intervals (5 secs, 10 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, etc). The Highlights option does a pretty good job of picking out the significant changes within the clip
Lastly, I have discovered that you can drag a clip from Sony's PMB into PRE7. It won't let you put it directly onto the Timeline but it will let you drop it into the Project file list (found under the Edit tab).
I do hope that this info has helped others like me who are trying to get to grips with editing and cataloging AVCHD footage.

  • How do I rotate an .mts (AVCHD Lite) video clip 90 degrees?

How do I rotate an .mts (AVCHD Lite) video clip 90 degrees? It's a video taken in the portrait orientation with a digital camera. I can open the .mts video clip in VLC player for Mac, but I don't see any editing options relevant to this.

If it will play with QuickTime Player, then you can rotate it with QuickTime Pro.
    <http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/>
It provides a key to enable extra functions in QuickTime Player 7 (Utilities folder).
Click "Show Movie Properties" in the "Window" menu, select the video track, then the "Visual Settings" tab. Select the desired rotation, then "Save As" from the "File" menu.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 crashes due to deadlock in the thread wait chain when creating thumbnails for *.mts (AVCHD) files

    Hi,
the Elements Organizer 11 creates a deadlock in the wait chain when generating thumbnails for more than a handful of MTS (AVCHD) files.
After importing AVCHD files from my Canon video camera, the organizer using default settings always crashes. I was able to narrow down the problem to be caused by thumbnail generating.
After deactivating the automatic generation of thumbnails, the organizer does not crash any more upon launching .
Of course, working without thumbnails is not very practical. The next resort is manual trigger of thumbnail generation by selecting "update thumbnail".
If I manually trigger updating of thumbnails for files one by one, then it works for quite many files before crashing again.
Selecting thumbnail update for multiple files at once has a much higher likelihood to crash.
This does not seem to be related to particular file contents: a file that leads to crashing once may be flawlessly get a thumbnail created at the next attempt.
The Windows event report looks as follows (German language Windows):
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe, Version: 11.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x505e9f67
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: msvcrt.dll, Version: 7.0.9600.16384, Zeitstempel: 0x52158ff5

    My questions:
    - has anyone experienced the same problem?
    - is this a known issue with Organizer 11?
    - is the issue solved with Organizer 12?
I have Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements 11 installed and not experienced any other issues with these applications.
Playback of said AVCHD (*.mts) files works flawlessly, i.e. I do not have any codec or performance issue on my PC.
Deactivation of anti-virus software has no significant effect. I have excluded video directories from scanning anyways.
Have deactivated face recognition, visual search and smart tagging in the organizer.
Have also disabled hyperthreading in the BIOS.
Using Windows XP compatibility settings for PSE somewhat improved the stability, but did not completely eliminate crashes.
Additionally, it signnificantly slows down thumbnail generation and a progress indication window becomes visible during thumbnail generation, which is barely noticable in native Win 8.1 mode.
Officially, Elements 11 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
There is a knowledgebase article related to Elements 6, which recommends to disable multi-threading and to enforce execution of Organizer on more than one core.
This reduces the problem a little bit, but thumbnailing more than a handful of files still leads to crashing.
By means of the task manager, I analyzed the wait chain of the process PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:
Every time the fault occurs, it is caused by a deadlock in the wait chain.
    For example:
    PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 6540
    -- PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 5932

Thanks for the suggestion. I subsequently realized that my Airplay settings on ITunes are ok. The problem is with the settings on Pure Music. I still havent figured this out. When i stream using just ITunes, it works fine, but when I play music using ITunes / Pure Magic, I still have an issue with Apple TV.

  • How can I import or download AVCHD files on a memory card to FCE?

How can I import or download AVCHD files on a memory card to FCE?

What camera is this from? Make sure it is actual AVCHD and not some variant such as AVCHD Lite which is not supported.
Also, try this: In the Log and Transfer Pane, click on the Gear icon do set the preferences and set the Import
Preferences > AVCHD Plugin > AC3 Audio to Plain Stereo.
You can also download a trial version of Clipwrap and see if by converting the files to AIC with that software, then importing the files to FCE you have better luck.

  • How can I play 1080p MTS file without conversion?

    Hi,
I wasn't yet able to find a decent player capable to play 1080p MTS files smoothly? I acquired the snapshots using a Sony DSC-HXV9 and I don't want to convert them. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

This MTS files can't be direcly played by media player. You can find yourself a converter app. But since you don't want to convert your videos I recommend you VLC player, it may help you .But the quality may not very good. for some free converter app: Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip, freevideomaker.

  • How to prevent color banding in AVCHD files on import?

    Hi!
I am trying to import some 1080 60i AVCHD files from my Panasonic G3 camera into iMovie '11. Once the files are imported they show very strong color banding/pixelation, that does not show up if I play the clips on the same computer/screen directly from the SD card in Quicktime player. Here is a screenshot from of the original frame, and here is exported movie.
I am using all default setting for export to Quicktime movie (1080 HD, "Best" quality).
For import I tried so far:
    1. Import into iMovie at full quality from the SD card;
    2. rewrap AVCHD into MOV (with ClipWrap) without resampling then import
    3. convert AVCHD to Apple Intermediate codec (with Clip Wrap), then import
    No difference!
Is it even possible to avoid such banding/pixelation with iMovie or another video editor that's available for free/cheap? If yes, how is it done?
Here is a 40 Mb mts file if you want to try to test your method: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40852067/00011.MTS
    Will appreciate any advice!
    Thank you in advance,

  • MTS (AVCHD) files from Sony HDRAX2000 produce HUGE Quicktime files

    Hi,
I am editing some clips for a Client in Premiere CS5. They provided me with clips from the camera they used (Sony HDRAX2000). The files are MTS (AVCHD). I am able to edit these files in Premiere CS5 (& CS4) as well as After Effects CS5 (& CS4). However when I output the result to Quicktime using the same resolution and settings as the original, the file size is outrageous. For example a 2 minute Quicktime with a resolution of 583 X 329 ends up being 1.8 GB. If I output the file at the same settings as the clip (1920 x 1080) the 2 minute clip is nearly 20 GB!!!
I attempted to convert the source files to Quicktime using the Adobe Media Encoder (I tried with both CS5 and CS4 versions).
The original 8 minute MTS file that is 1.3 GB results in a Quicktime file OVER 80 GB!!!! (Both files are the same exact resolution (1920 x 1080) same bit depth (24 bit) same frame rate 29.97. I've tried several CODECS with no substantial difference. Does anyone have any experience with a workflow that would allow the final output to be of a reasonable and manageable size? The goal is to provide the highest quality Quicktime file I can at 583 x 329 and this file will ultimately be used in a web project (Flash) were file size is obviously critical.
I did also try a couple of "Video converters" available on the web. They can convert the files with excellent file size results but the quality is unusable (looks obviously compressed).
I do have a fair amount of experience providing these types of outputs/files for similar projects and I've never run into such a problem. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. What I meant was the workflow I have delveloped with the client to provide a quicktime file for their use on their end is what has been proven.
The whole reason I started this thread was hoping someone had a NEW WORKFLOW that would allow me to do this.
I have hundreds of clips I have produced for this client that utilze the Animation codec at 100% at a small fraction of the size. In fact I have one clip that is 46 minutes in duration 1920 X 1080 60 FPS using QT Animation codec at 100% and the file is 40 GB. The difference being the source files which were shot with a different camera in DVCPRO HD format.
So if what you're saying is I should expect an 8 minute clip to be 80 GB I'm a bit lost.
Anyway thanks for your reply hopefully someone has some helpful advise. I'm not here to argue with anyone or to be proven wrong, I'm just looking for help.
I'll continue to seach for other options. Thanks to all who have responded.

  • How can I play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam on quicktime?

When I try to play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam I receive an error message stating that a required codec is not available.  How can I get this codec and is it a free download?  Neither audio or video will play.

Thanks for your input.  To clarify a couple of things, I'm ultimately looking at editing my video from the handycam, hopefully with imovie.  In exploring how to do this I came across mpeg streamclip video converter for osx but then discovered that in order to install it with Lion, I'd need to download a mpeg-2 playback component.  From what I understand, this component is inherent in QT 10.1 with Lion and therefor you can't brink up a 'disk image' in order to install the video converter.  Sounds like I'd need to buy that.
As previously mentioned, there are three forms of QT support for MPEG-2 content:
    1) The QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) is required for use by QT 7 based applications (QT 7 Player, GarageBand, as well as, QT 7 based third-party applications like MPEG Streamclips. This component is not used required for nor used by the QT 10.1 Player or iMovie '07/'08/'11 apps.
    2) The Importer Component installed as part of your video editing software package. As previously indicated, this package handles the importation of content from various camcorders employing many different compression formats. It's primary purpose is to make the imported content "edit" compatible with the video editing software. In the case of "muxed" GOP MPEG-2/AC3 content, it decompresses/turns the P- and B-frames into I-frames which essentially makes the video QT editit compatible at the frame level without actually converting the video to a different compression format. This is a moderately fast operation which does not degrade the video quality. In addition, the importer component also converts the AC3 audio to QT "edit" compatible AIFF (Linear PCM) content and places both the video and audio content in an MOV file container. Since "muxed" GOP MPEG-2 content essentially synchronizes the audio and video content spatially, the last step in the import process is to add a time offset to minimize audio/video drift in the MOV file which synchronizes the multiple data tracks temporally with respect to an external timing reference. The result of this operation is QT edit compatible content in an MOV file container that is playback on any system having iMovie '07/'08/'11 installed. That is why I always recommend using this work flow for content still located on the camcorder.
    3) The QT 10.1 MPEG-2/AC3 GOP support appears to be built into the app or only accessible using the app and not available for use by either QT 7 or iMovie applications. This content is not QT edit compatible at the frame level (i.e., the manner in which all Apple video editors work).
    4) In the case where the "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content has already been removed from the camcoder and you can no longer "import" the content as per option 2 above, purchase of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component and use of the MPEG Streamclip app provides, in my opinion, the greatest degree of secondary functionality. In this case you have the option of demultiplexing the original content to M2V and AC3 content or paired M2V and AIFF elementary stream files or conversion of the content to any QT editit compatible audio and video compression combination including "Pro" editing codecs if FCP is installed on your system.
    5) With regard to the installation of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component, you have three options:
    a) You can install the component on a pre-Lion system and then copy it to your Lion system.
    b) You can download the MPEG Streamclip "beta" package and us the "helper" software to install the component directly on the Lion operating system.
    c) You can us an app like Pacifist to extract/install the component directly to the Lion OS platform.
In any event, remember that this component is not supported by the QT 10.1 app nor is AC3 natively supported by the QT 7 app and so you will have to use the MPEG Streamclip app to both make use of this component and provide app support of the AC3 audio which can then be "bridged" for use by QT 7 based apps.
All this being said, when I decided for the first time to just open my video in QT 10.1 (which is a .mpg file) it wouldn't open and the error said that a required codec wasn't available.  The file is .mpg and info states it is a mpeg-2 video, AC3.  I have VLC installed and can view the video with that, but am just frustrated as to why QT 10.1 won't play it (as I believe it should, since the file is a .mpg).
As I have repeatedly stated, I consider QT 10.1 "a work in progress" and have given up trying to guess why it works in some cases and not in others. In some cases, files sent to me having the problem you describe suddenly became playable in QT 10.1 after using VLC to copy the data from the original file container to a new program stream file container (i.e., not conversion was applied—just the copy of the original data). You can try this for playback purposes but it will do nothing for your editing work flow unless you plan to us QT 10.1 to convert the content to H.264/AAC for editing in which case HandBrake or MPEG Streamclip (with QT MPEG-2 Playback component) would probabaly work on the original file. (I.e., I prefer using a low-compression, high data rate compression format at highest video quality setting as an "intermediate" editing format to preserve as much of the original quality as possible.)
One thing I also noticed, there is no QT file in my library (I didn't move, delete or change anything, just looked to see if I could find the file as mentioned on another forum, but it wasn't there).  Not sure if this has a connection as to whether the .mpg file can be played with QT 10.1 or not.
If you are referring to an MOV file created by importing the content directly from the camcorder, then it will be located in your iMovie "Event" folder, the location of which will depend on which drive you assigned it to. Such a file sould already be both playback and editable in QT applications.
Any other input would be much appreciated.  Am I missing something from my QT 10.1 that should have  been installed?
I believe that covers just about everything. Since QT 10.1 is the original version installed by the Lion OS installer, there have not been any updates to it and, unless you have been messing around deleting things in your QT component folders, there is little probability that anything has been deleted, removed, or misplaced during normal system use. What I normally recommed is that you keep QT 10.1 installed and install the Lion compatible version of QT 7 (v7.6.6 if not already installed) to maximize your QT playback capabilities between the two. In fact, I tend to use the QT 7 "Pro" player for most daily "quickie" edits and still consider it the more useful of the two utility-Players.

  • How can I join/merge my AVCHD files that I tape with my camcorder without re-encoding the files?

I have a lot of tapes that cut in the middle while recording more than 12 minutes. I would like to join/merge my files. What should I do? Which softwares should I use?

Because I don't have any of Sony's softwares, or softwares that they use, I can't help much on that side of things, but programs that I use are
Freemake Video Converter to convert it into a format that VirtualDub can read, then use VirtualDub to load up the first file, then use the Amend AVI to add the next file that you want to merge, and keep going until you're ready.
Then I check the video and audio compression, make sure they're on full compression, choose the codec and video bitrate, and audio bitrate that I want, and save.
I'm sure Sony's programs, or the ones they use, make it much easier. Try PlayMemories and Sony Vegas, they'll work with the AVCHD files without too much extra converting (and if it does convert, it's all in-program so should be much easier)

  • How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If anyone is kind enough to help, please explain in the most basic terms as I'm not that computer literate.

If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.
