How do i play windows games on mac?

its probably a simple software install or something but i do not know, and are new to the apple computer system. i have a macbook pro that i just bought and i didnt realize half of the games on my steam wernt mac compatable, thanks

You have two options. You'll need to install windows either way but you can go about this two ways. The built in windows system is called BootCamp. It would partition your harddrive into two pieces. A windows part and a mac part. You would need to restart the computer each time you want to switch back and forth.
The other option is to use virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion. This would make it so you can open windows programs while still having the mac os running. This may be slower however because both operating systems would be running at the same time.
Whichever option you choose you will need a copy of windows 7 or whatever version of windows you want to use.
If you want to go the bootcamp route do a spotlight search for BootCamp Assistant and follow the instructions. If you want to use parallels or vmware fusion you'll have to download them from their sites.

  • Playing Windows games on Mac Pro?

I'm giving my son my Mac Pro 3,1 2.8 gig dual quad core machine. He wants to play Windows games on it. How does one set that up? Also, he wants to upgrade the video card to the ATI 5770. Does he buy the one for Apple or Windows, and does he need special drivers? I'm getting a new Mac Pro 12 core. Thanks.

you will want Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (System Builder is fine, $139)
    Radeon 6870 3DMark 30% gain on 5870

To see early startup you want an Apple compliant card. To play games you may be fine or want something more, depends on game and what level of performance.
You install Apple drivers and all the normal Windows gpu and other drivers.
    And Microsoft Security Essentials.

Ah, didn't you already try or install Windows? seems like you did at least try? No?

  • How can I play Windows games that require CD on mac mini bootcamp?

    Hey!
So have a brandnew optical drive-less mac mini, and have Windows 7 installed as bootcamp partition. Want to play a game on the Windows side but it requires a CD be in the drive to play - which, obviously, I don't have. I tried Carbon Copy Cloner to a USB stick - it worked for the installation but not the game play. Any suggestions how I get an image to mount that the Windows Bootcamp will recognize? Is it possible to mount the CD as a shared disk on my G5 elsewhere on my network or should I just stick to Daemon Tools or MagicISO stuff on Windows. If the latter - how do I get the data from a USB stick mounted as a disk image then (do I need to copy it to the local, then create a disk image and then copy to that image for example?)
I can see this is going to be a problem for all sorts of other things I still have "legacy" I can see so any help on this will carry forward, thanks.

Yeah, I know, but the whole idea of moving away from disks isn't such a bad one - so I'm wondering if I can implement it someway - I have the original copy disks so it's not about pirating them to play games but ripping them the right way so they work... hmmm.

  • How do I play windows game on my Mac without downloading windows on my mac?

I know this is probably impossible, but there are a few pieces of software I'd like to install but they are for PC only. I'd love to know how to install them on my Mac without having to get something like Parallels and downloading Windows on my Mac. Is there any kind of software that can "convert" it or anything?

    You don't.
Sure there are a few games that will run sort of something using Codeweavers, but for the most part you need Windows completely and for performance, in BootCamp.
Running Windows in virtual machine software is about 1/5th the performance of direct boot into BootCamp. But for most other apps that are not power hungrey, it's good enough and easier than having to direct boot hassle.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
And for the best gaming machine, a Windows 7 tower is the one to use, Mac's can't upgrade their video cards like 3D games require from time to time. There are no/little video card upgrades for the MacPro, but on Windows there are a insane amount of video card upgrade possibilites for the fastest play.
You'll get about 1-2 years of online gameplay running Windows on a Mac, then the video card will get you and you'll be fragbait.

  • Playing Windows Games on Mac, without having to install Windows?

I don't necessarily know if this is a question for this category, but is it possible? Is there a patch or program I can download to play games for Windows on my Mac?

I have to agree with templeton. Virtualization is not stable, in other words, it is not for massive graphical or cpu apps. Its more like something to access a few apps once in awhile, i really dont get it tho, ppl should just use Boot Camp, its FREE, with Leopard. And alot of us already have that. I would also recomend using codeweavers app. I tried it on my friends macbook and its work pretty good. not for hardcore gamers (which hardcore gamer would use a mac? we're for creative appilcations not no-life gamers) but its good for Diablo, Halo, Call of Duty, Command Conquer, battlefield, etc.

  • How can I play PC Games on Macs?

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

By installing Windows on the Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not yet fully developed for the Mac - some features are not yet implemented - but it does work otherwise.
    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Playing Windows Games on MacBook with Windows 7/BootCamp

is it possible to play windows games on mac?
For example: I want to play Battlefield 3 and I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp. Does it work?
I have the new Macbook Pro Retina 13" with 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB.
Its brand new and I just have a few programs on it. And i don't want to play that game in high end graphic in UHD or something like that.
    Could i play smooth?

  • How can i install windows games in my macbook pro

I m a game lover but since i've macbook pro,i haven't played any game on my macbook...so guys please tell me how can i install windows games to my macbook pro.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

  • Playing Windows Games on IMac

Hey guys, i'm a complete noob here so bear with me.
I am going to be buying a 20 Inch IMac in the summer or maybe even a 24 inch depending on the answer to the following questions:
Can the 24 inch IMac with the 7300 graphics card play Windows games (Bf2, half life 2, Armed assault) WELL with a certain program and what is the program?
Sorry if i seem arrogant, i have been searching a while to find somewhere for support, if you could answer these 2 questions and provide links that would be great.
I am tired of windows and it's constant failing, help me switch over to Mac.

Right now, Bootcamp burns you a CD with Windows drivers; not all the drivers are suitable for Vista yet, so some devices in your Mac will not work properly if booted into Vista. Consequently, it is recommended that if you use Bootcamp at this time, you should not attempt to install Vista, but rather you should use Windows XP SP2 instead. Presumably, at some future date, drivers that work with Vista will become available.
I don't know if you're understanding that Bootcamp does not run Windows. All it does is create a Windows partition on your hard drive and burn a CD of drivers for Windows. At that point, Bootcamp's work is done.
After that, then you grab your Windows install CD and install Windows on your Mac, just as you would do with any old Dell or Toshiba. Then your Mac can boot into Windows and be just like any other Windows PC.
You really should go to the Bootcamp forum and talk to people who actually have done it.

  • Best way to port all Windows XP files, applicaitons and data form my PC over to iMac and how to run those Windows apps on Mac?ns on Mac?

I have a Windows XP machine with apps, files and data.  I want to get all that over to my Mac, and also run those apps under Windows XP or even Windows 7 on my Mac.  Im wondering:
    1.  How best to get those files over to my Mac
    2.  How to run those apps and use my Windows based files/data on my Mac
    3.  How best to run Windows on my Mac....either partitiion my Mac's hard drive and boot up either Windows or MAC OS, or run some other program where I can easily switch back and forth form Windows to MAC OS, or perhaps get it all on an external hard drive, maybe partition that Windows/MAC OS and boot from that?
    Thanks!

I agree you would benefit by using virtualizaiton software. Virtual Box is one alternative the commercial apps for doing virtualization are Parallels and VMWare Fusion which you also might be interested in for their support and updates.
Also you may benefit by book marking and using:
Mac 101 , Switch 101 & Find Out How Video tutorials
For your MS Office apps then I'd STRONGLY recommend using the native Office For Mac versions, you can find these on Amazon for less than $100 and then you can run the apps natively rather than having to lean on MS Windows. Also for your Financial and Tax software you also may want to use OS X apps too, for example I used Quicken for over 20 years (PC mostly and some Mac) but switched to iBank. Also for tax software I have used Quicken's Turbo Tax, this also runs natively on OS X.
In other words for your stated needs I don't see much reason to stay with MS Windows. You may have other considerations, if you do please state them, some may be real issues and some may be easily overcome.
