How do I preserve an Existing ext4 Partition during a new install?

Hi, all!
I need to do an install, but want to keep my existing /home partition which is on /dev/sda4. I've never done this with Arch. Is there anything I need to know, before I start?
Cheers,
Chris.

Well, one advantage of Arch Linux that you don't have to reinstall it from time to time, isn't it? I installed Arch 2 times, first a 32 bit version, then I changed to 64 bit architecture. I don't even rememeber where I should put the install CD to.

  • How to Reinstall Windows on Existing Bootcamp Partition

I've been running Windows 7 under Bootcamp on my 2011 MacBookPro. I've run into a situation where Windows7 will no longer install updates. I worked one day with Microsoft for over an hour but they could not find what was causing the problem. FYI, when looking into this problem, the error code that is produced is Error Code 8007010B. I have found nothing substantial online in regards to this code.
I've used Winclone (a Mac application) in the past without issues to restore a Boot Camp Windows partition. Since purchasing Winclone 3.4 I've made several backups, but now that I am actually trying to restore one of those backups I'm getting a message:
"the image you are attempting to restore does not contain the correct information".
So I am frustrated and have emailed twocanoes.com, the Winclone publisher and waiting for their answer.
    Working with Bootcamp
I'm trying to figure out the steps I need to reinstall Windows from scratch in an existing bootcamp partition. Do I need to start from scratch with Bootcamp, or can I reinstall Windows from inside Windows? If I do the latter, how do I prompt Bootcamp to reinstall the Apple drivers?
    Other Issues FYI
I'm having trouble locating the Windows 7 instal DVD I originally purchased. I do have the serial number. So I've downloaded a copy of Windows 7 from the  MyDigitalLife Windows7 Repository.
I have burned the iso image to a DVD. I've got 2 versions, one is the .iso file burned onto the DVD, the other are the contents of the .iso file burned to DVD. I assume to install Windows, it will want the one with the contents of the Windows installer burned to it? Any other issues I may be unaware of regarding this kind of Windows install?
Is there any advantage of reinstalling Windows from a USB Flash drive as compared to a DVD? Just curious.
Finally, for Activation, because this copy of Windows is going back into the same Bootcamp partition on the same hardware, will I have to reactivate Windows? If so, suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Dave

I appreciate the help. Can you tell me what are the steps to tell Bootcamp to install drivers into a Windows install? Thanks!
Update: I looked at the Bootcamp Assistant instructions and now I understand your answer. Info here:
"Step 4: Install the Windows support software
After installing Windows, install Mac drivers and other support software for Windows. The
support software installs Boot Camp drivers to support your Mac hardware, including AirPort
devices, the built-in camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and the function
keys on an Apple keyboard. The software also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows
and the Apple Boot Camp system tray item.
You can download the support software by selecting the “Download the latest Windows support
software from Apple” option in Boot Camp Assistant. The support software must be copied to a USB flash drive formatted in MS_DOS FAT. If the installer does not start automatically, doubleclick the setup.exe file in the Bootcamp folder."
If you or anyone have any other tips, they would be appreciated. As this appears to happen with Windows quite frequently, and I've had to do it multiple times over the years, I'm not looking forward to it.

  • Does the upgrade to Lion preserve an existing Bootcamp partition

Can someone give us a definitive answer on whether upgrading to lion will preserve an existing bootcamp win 7 64 bit partition (don't know if the win system matters but I tried to be specific)?
    Thanks

It is supposed to install only on the OS X formatted drive you select. It does not change a Windows partition.
However, Lion must create a Recovery HD partition on the drive that requires slightly shrinking the last partition which is the Windows partition. If the installer is unable to do this then it will produce an error. In some cases the Windows volume is corrupted by the process. In this case boot from the Windows installer disc, go past the first screen into the recovery tools, and run the automatic recovery option. This should fix the problem.

  • How do I connect an existing Behance account to a new Adobe ID account ?

    Hello,
I am an existing Behance account holder.
I recently started a new job, where they give me access to a personal Macbook & Adobe cc account.
I want to link my existing Behance profile to my new Adobe CC account.
Is this even possible - If so how to I connect them ?
It would not be beneficial to create a new Behance profile.
    Thanks,

Hello - absolutely! You just need to make sure that your Behance account is linked with that Adobe ID. Please login to your Behance account, then visit this link and choose "use a different Adobe ID" and enter your new Adobe ID with the CC account. From then on, you'll use that email address to login to Behance:Behance

  • How do I import an existing finalised imovie into a new project either in part or full. The movie I want to import is filed under "movies" but greyed out when I go through the procedure in imovie 11

How do I import an existing finalised movie clip into  a new developing project ? I go through the imovie 11 procedure for importing and the list of clips (finalised and un-finalised) appears, but always "greyed out" which makes it impossible to create anything. I have tried placing it on the desk top and dragging but this doesn't work either.

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

  • How do I transfer an existing Aperture library to a new external hard drive

I have a new external hard drive where I want to store my pictures to free up room on my iMac
How do I take an existing Aperture library and move it to the external hard drive so that Aperature can find and use it?  Once it is moved can I delete the library from my iMac without causing problems with my new hard drive library?
    thanks

    Hello Barty,
is your library referenced or managed?
If your Aperture Library is managed, then you can simply copy it to your new external drive using the Finder. Make a backup of your old library and convince yourself that the backup is working.
If your library is referenced, then use Aperture to relocate your master image files to the external drive (select all images, then File -> Relocate Master), then copy your Library to the external drive using the Finder.
To point Aperture to the new library location, double click the new Aperture Library to open Aperture with it. Test it thoroughly, before you delete the original library.
You might consider only to relocate the master images to your external drive and to leave the then much smaller Aperure Library on your system drive. That way Aperture will work faster, and you will be able to browse and share your images, even when our external drive is not connected.
    Regards

  • I lost my ipod. Bought a used one to replace it. When I plug it into the computer, the computer doesn't even seem to realize it's plugged in. How do I put my existing itunes library onto the new (used) ipod?

How do I clear out a used ipod classic and put my existing itunes library on it? I lost my previous ipod and bought a used one to replace it.

Do one or more of the following
    > Restart your computer
    > Uninstall & Reinstall iTunes
    > Reset iDevice (won't erase everything)
    > Go to My Computer (windows xp) or Computer (windows vista & 7) and see if iDevice shows
    > Restore the iDevice completely (will erase everything)
    > Make sure the iTunes and/or iOS firmware is up-to-date.
The ones I cross over is the ones you don't have to do. This should help

  • How do I use an existing cfp program with a new unit?

I have an existing compact fieldpoint setup (IAK file & Programs) that I would like to install on a new unit.  How can this be achieved?

Hi DavK.  Unfortunately there can be a lot of 'well, that depends' in how you go about moving an application
to a new FieldPoint controller.  The following is based on the assumption that you do not have the development
environment available; if you do, it is probably easier to just recompile targeting the new controller.
    The exe is fairly easy:
    1) ftp into the controller
    2) cd to ni-rt\startup
    3) rename startup.exe or startup.rtexe to 'something else'
    4) delete 'something else'
    5) ftp in the new startup.exe or startup.rtexe
    6) ftp in any supporting files (i.e. for external calls)
    7) in c:\ni-rt.ini set  RTTarget.ApplicationPath=c:\ni-rt\startup\startup.exe (or .rtexe)
    8) in c:\ni-rt.ini set RTTarget.LaunchAppAtBoot=True
The .iak setting is probably easiest to re-create with MAX, rather than copy in.
The depends part comes in with how the I/O channels were named or referenced in the .exe.  As long
as everything was done in a generic (consistent between controllers) way you could be ok.
My guess is that if you have trouble it will be here.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to delete the hdd and re-partition during the installation.

    Hi,
I am new to Arch, currently I have a laptop that installed with Opensuse os, now I want to switch it to Arch entirely.
So, I need to delete the whole partitions that previously created when install Openesuse. I just want to install single Arch on the machine only.
    How can I do it?
    Thanks

Yea you can set up your scheme all with gparted. Keep in mind though, that is just formatting your disk correctly, no files will be installed, just the disk setup for arch to install to.
So when you get into gparted what your goal is going to be is to set up your disk for install. I used the scheme of
    3 partitions,
    one for root 20GB - /
    one for swap 2GB
and one for home 80GB- /home
This is a pretty common config and I think it is best but it depends on your situation and what you want, thats pretty standard though.
So that's what you'll have set up when you leave gparted live cd and then boot to your arch cd, all your partitions set up and ready for arch to install its files to.
Also, arch wiki is really killer wiki, I mean the guys did an awesome job on the beginners guide, but there's nothing wrong with having extra reference guides. I used this one with the arch wiki:
    http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process
I would take a look at them both.
And i would have them both open when your doing this whole thing, so hopefully you have a tablet or a cell phone to have these pages open while you install.
And like pks said, you don't have to use gparted live cd, its just recommended in the beginners guide. I did use it, and i thought it made it a lot easier. But if you are familiar with command line disk editing, go for it!
EDIT: PS man i dont know about you but i always like to have extra partitions on my disk so I can test other linux distrobutions. It kinda sounds like you are testing them, you have centos and now arch, are you sure your not going to want to install more later? Cause if you maybe want to and you have a big enough hard drive your not pressed for space you might want to create your arch install partitions and have an extra couple for another distro in the future.
Like me I installed arch, and now im installing Gentoo to try it out, i made extra partitions beforehand.
So I made my arch ones:
    sda1 - /
    sda2 - swap
    sda3 /home
    then for Gentoo
    sda4 - /
    sda5 /home
and they would be sharing swap partition. So i had all these partitions set up before I installed anything to the disk. Just an idea Good luck!

  • How can I preserve PDF files in iBooks during synch or iOS updates

I have lost many important PDF files saved in iBooks collections as a result of upgrading the iOS on my iPad. How can PDF files and other free books, NOT purchased through iBooks store that are opened and stored and organized in iBooks collections be preserved/saved during iOS updates? Same question also applies to PDF files stored in other Apps like iAnnotate.

Before upgrading you should always back up your devices. If there is any problem you can then restore to the backup. pdfs do not sync across all devices. To sync pdfs you need to connect your devices to your Mac, and depending on where the pdfs are located, you either transfer them to your Mac, or sync them from your Mac to the iPad and iPhone.
