How do I prevent auto-updating of ATV software?

My problem is that I have HughesNet, which has a fair usage limit. Unless either I, or Apple, can schedule ATV updates to a 2:00 - 5:59 a.m. window, the updates kick us into slower than dial up for 24 hours.
I'm running 2.3 right now with my ATV wanting to install an update...probably the one that kicked us into fair access penalty the day before yesterday. I can see no option in the menu to manually control auto-updating. I understand there used to be one, but I can't find it.
So far my only option is to kill the power to ATV. But that's not going to prevent updates while it's running.
Any ideas?

I just got off the phone with Apple tech support. He said that there is no auto-update, but we made sure that ATV wasn't somehow using any auto-update permissions in either Software Update or iTunes.
Here's what I noticed. When I would turn my ATV back on by restoring the power and go to General, the Update Software line had the spinner going. When I would click on that I was given the choice to continue the update or to do it later. I chose 'later'. Going back to Update Software showed no spinner.
However, it looked like every time I changed what the ATV was doing and then checked General, Update Software had gone back into the spinning mode. If the Apple tech rep is correct, that spinner wasn't indicating that a download was in progress, just that one was available. I'm not sure I believe that, since something went after 260 meg plus of download the other day when all of the Macs here were asleep and the only functioning machine was ATV. That's what helped in a big way to trigger the fair usage idiocy of HughesNet.
This morning at 3:30 a.m. I got up and triggered the update. 360+ Meg later it was ready to install when I woke back up.
Today, now running under then latest upgrade, the Update Software line has no spinner.
Whether the problem has been solved is unclear. But I have decommissioned any auto-upgrade capabilities on Software Update and iTunes. We'll see when Apple launches the next ATV software upgrade.
Props, however, to Apple's tech call availability. It's down toward the left corner of Apples's home support page.

  • How pricing condition be auto updated if the user changes price in PO ?

    Hi
    Is there any configuration setting on how pricing condition can be automatically updated if the user changes price in the purchase order ?
    Thanks
    Maruthi

    Hi Maruthi,
    As far as I know, POs (like many other documents in SAP) are "snapshots" of data as it was at the time of the document creation.  This snapshot has no direct link to master data, so it will not change unless you go to the document and manually change/refresh whatever data you need updated.
    Even if there were a way to link your PO to master data to auto-update I don't see how any change on a PO could go backwards and change master data.  Pricing works the other way around - the PO takes the price from the condition records, not the records from the PO.
    Hope this helps,
    J

  • TS3147 How do I stop auto updates for an HP printer I no longer have?

    I keep getting auto update notices for a printer I have discarded.  How do I stop this?  Within the last year my "HP" printer quit and I replaced it with a "Brother" printer.  It is annoying to keep getting the HP irrelevant update notifications.  I removed the HP printer info in the application folder on my hard drive, but that did not help.

    I use Find File myself.  I think it has been discontinued.

  • How to disable yum auto-update in OL6

    Hello,
    What is the correct procedure to disable yum auto-updates?
    The "yum-updatesd" daemon that existed in OL 5 does no longer exist in OL 6.
    I found out that the "PackageKit Update Applet" seems to be responsible for running the auto-update. It can be enabled or disabled in the new Preferences/Startup Applications control panel. There is also the "gpk-prefs" control panel to set the update interval to "never". However, both control panels work on a per-user/login basis and cannot be used to disable yum auto-update system-wide.
    Finally I found /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf, which has a DefaultBackend parameter, but I don't know what I should put there.
    Is there here a way, to disable the yum auto-update system-wide without uninstalling PackageKit?
    I already checked the documentation at http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Deployment_Guide/ch-PackageKit.html but it was not helpful.
    Thanks!

    The actuall problem I'm trying to fix is the following error:
    <pre>
    Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
    The other application is: PackageKit
    Memory : 45 M RSS (357 MB VSZ)
    Started: Tue Jul 10 09:27:04 2012 - 04:09 ago
    State : Sleeping, pid: 2317
    </pre>
    The above error can happen if you have an active Gnome session and e.g. connect as root using ssh session and try to use yum.
    I may have found a way now to disable the automatic system updates, however, I don't know if this is the proper solution since I cannot find any information about it.
    I modified */etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf* and changed:
    <pre>
    DefaultBackend=yum -> DefaultBackend=nobackend
    </pre>
    It requires a re-login of your Gnome X session to take affect.
    Then Administration/Software update does no longer scan for updates, and apparently no longer lock yum at the system level. At least the problem seems to be fixed globally that way.
    I will mark this question as answered, but any ideas are still welcome.
    Thanks!
    Btw, here is a link to previous older thread to disable it on a per-user basis:

  • How do I stop auto update of date/time

    Hi,
    I'm starting to despair, a while ago I stupidly clicked on auto update/time on a letter I was working on, it seemed like a good idea at the time. But now whenever I open any letter the date is automatically updated which is a major problem as I am losing the references to when I actually wrote and therefore sent these letters. I'm too scared to open letters now because I'll lose this important piece of information.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks
    Nathalie

    Next time, don't use the Pages 's insert date_time feature.
    Use the one delivered in the free WordService from Devon Technologies.
    It always inserts a fixed date_time.
    But I have wondering about your problem.
    The Pages User Guide states:
    • To add and format the date and time, place the insertion point where you want the value to appear, and then choose Insert > Date & Time.
    To change the date and time format, Control-click the date and time value, choose Edit Date & Time, and then choose a date and time format from the pop-up menu. *If you want the document to always show the current date and time, select “Automatically update on open.”*
    Which, if I understand well means that the default setting is that the inserted date_time is a frozen (fixed) one.

  • How to turn off auto update in numbers?

    G'day, working with a large spreadsheet... is there any way to turn off auto-update in Numbers?
    cheers
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
    No. Numbers recalculates the whole table when any change is made to that table. The use of (multiple) header rows, header columns and footers rows exacerbates the issue. There is no way provided to shut off the auto-recalculation.
    Feature enhancements requests (for future editions) may be made using the Provide Numbers Feedback item in the Numbers menu (or by clicking the link in this message).

    providing you don't interrupt the update process until it has completely finished (ie played the welcome video) then you shouldn't have any problems.

  • How to stop GPS auto update on C6

    hi everybody, I have nokia C6. My problem is that its downloading all the time some GPS updates which cost me a lot MB to pay. every day is downloading 12 till 20 hours non stop. My battery is dieing every day becouse of this. Please help, how to stop this download
       thanks

    GPS is for positioning (use of navigational maps..) whereas GPRS is using Internet..
    If you rae having problem of GPRS then it must be connected to some applications on the phone which are running in the background... Some applications are set to  update at regular intervals(e.g. some Weather widgets..).. some syncs at regular intervals(e.g.e-mail / Mail for Exchange..) Even if you are using GPS there are various methods and ways like using the A-GPS or Network for initial positioning.. using the maps in ONLINE mode.. ets...
    So best thing is to go to each of this and set Updates/ Sync to 'Manual' also under 'Destnations' settings for each access point you may define 'After confirmation'..so that everytime it will as if you want to connect to internet.. and for maps.. use OFFLINE mode with Integrated GPS method..

  • How can I disable auto-update/save when editing a Bump/Specular/Normal map in 3D?

    Im working on a rather large comp, and while triyng to paint on my bump material PSB, the auto-save/update feature is really making the process painstakingly antagonizing. Is there any way to disable this? Note, I am not referring to the general auto-save, this is only in regards to 3D material editing.

    If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
    You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
    Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
    I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature.  Where do you see your layer being saved?

  • How do I prevent the "update available" message while I'm watching a program?

    My 2011 Mac Mini is connected, via HDMI, to my 46" Samsung HD TV. I buy and rent 1080 movies and TV shows from iTunes. I also play a lot of other files that I've downloaded from other places. It's terrific except for one fly in the ointment...
    No matter what I'm watching, iTunes, NetFlix, VLC, Quicktime or straight off the desktop; if there is new software available, I get that annoying message that appears in the upper right hand corner. I can slide it to the right but it comes back a few minutes later. I could stop everything and perform the upgrade 10 to 30 minutes later but is this really the way video on a Mac is supposed to work? I feel there should be a way, at least, to pervent this from happening when I'm watching a program/movie/TV show. If it happens between, fine but why does it always have to pester me when I'm trying to enjoy watching T.V.?
    I know there is a way to turn it off, for the day, but come on- There's got to be a better solution than that. My U-Verse box very rarely bugs me about things. OSX and/or iTunes does it ALL the time. Can't it give me a break when I'm watching T.V.?
    Hopefully, I just missed some setting but I've tried a few things that didn't work.
    This is not a disaster but if someone knows a solution, I would be very grateful!
    Thanks!
    Teddy

    Mende1,
      Thanks for the super-fast response!
    I believe I tried this once before but the check box for "Automatically check for updates" always comes back, the next day. However, this might be my best solution for now and I'll test it watching the latest "Ripper Street", in iTunes, tonight. If it lasts the length of the program, I'll have to decide if I want to select "This solved my question" or "This helped me."
    I think I expected Apple to be a little more inTune with this. I absolutely love watching programs with my Mac Mini via HDMI. If they could find a consistent way to not interrupt programs, even with "Automatically check for updates" checked, the Mac video experience would be nearly perfect.
    I do make sure to perform updates but, between my wife's Mac and my two, plus the fact that updates seem to be occuring on a weekly basis, it's not easy to update immediately. I just feel that if a person is watching a movie or T.V. program, it's very clunky to have the "update available" message continuously appearing.
    Thanks again!
    Teddy

  • How do I prevent auto-login? I never EVER save passwords, yet FF logs me into gmail without prompting for login.

    I never save passwords - never have, never will. Using evil IE, Gmail works correctly in that it prompts me for ID and password for each new browser instance. Yet when I open gmail with FF, it goes straight to my inbox without prompting for ID or password. I use gmail in "always secure" mode. Cookies are enabled, of course, just did not expect my password to be saved and loaded from a cookie. How can I rectify this problem?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    I have this issue too. I have never asked to be "always signed in" with gmail, yet sometimes it will sign me in automatically when I open my Firefox browser. I try clearing everything I can clear ( even though I've said NOT to save my password or sign in automatically), but it still happens. It's not even consistent - sometimes it will happen and sometimes not. This is very frustrating. I share my computer and I do not want automatic sign in anytime! >:o(

  • How do I prevent Security Updates from overwriting (custom) PHP install?

    Hi,
    I've been forced into re-installing PHP from binaries after every Apple Security Update that upgrades PHP and I'm over it. Everytime Apple upgrades PHP, "their" compile overwrites mine and I lose my libraries. I have to completely wipe the Apple PHP install and re-compile. I've done this 3 or 4 times now in the past couple years...
    Is there any way to force the Security Updates to retain the install of "my" libraries? What about the update installer(s)? Where are they?

    An Update shouldn't affect PHP, this is a server side language that is stored on the server for the implamintation of Dynamic Web Pages.
    Self-referentially short for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages.
    In an HTML document, PHP script (similar syntax to that of Perl or C ) is enclosed within special PHP tags. Because PHP is embedded within tags, the author can jump between HTML and PHP (similar to ASP and Cold Fusion) instead of having to rely on heavy amounts of code to output HTML. And, because PHP is executed on the server, the client cannot view the PHP code.
    PHP can perform any task that any CGI program can do, but its strength lies in its compatibility with many types of databases. Also, PHP can talk across networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP.
    PHP was created sometime in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf. During mid 1997, PHP development entered the hands of other contributors. Two of them, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, rewrote the parser from scratch to create PHP version 3 (PHP3).
