How do I prevent purchase of duplicate songs?

I'm new to iTunes and have purchased mostly singles. There was one time where iTunes
gave me a pop-up saying i already had the selected song in my Library
and asked if I wanted to purchase again. So I know there is SOMETHING
thatiTunes has that scans my previous purchases.
Yesterday I purchased two iTune Essentials albums. There were two songs that were duplicated, but iTunes didn't catch those.
My questions are:
Do I end up paying for those duplicated items (purchases)?
Is there a setting I can select that allows iTunes to find and prevent duplicate purchases?
Thank you for any assistance.

The iTunes store should warn you automatically if you are purchasing duplicated songs, however, I don't think it picks up on it you purchase 2 different albums that happen to contain the same song. Reason being, on that song's track information, I'm willing to bet the album name is different, which may lead iTunes to not realize that the songs are in fact one in the same.
If you purchase by the album, you'll pay full price for each album, even if both albums have 1 or 2 of the same songs. One way to get around this is purchase the albums by song, and just leave out the songs you already have. The only problem with this, is that the song won't appear with both albums in iTunes or on an iPod. (You could get around this with playlists if willing to do so).
Hope this is helpful

Just authorize the computer and retreive them.

  • How do we delete all the duplicate songs?

we have been coping our C Ds and found that we have tons of duplicate songs . how do we delete all the duplicates?

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
Note also that I don't consider the same song appearing on different albums to be duplicates.

  • How do I get rid of duplicate songs on iPhone?

I have the iPhone 4 and with one of the recent updates, my iTunes changed. Now when my phone syncs with my iTunes library, it has a lot of duplicate songs showing up on the phone. I went through manually and deleted them off my phone, but then when syncing again recently, they were all put on there again. What can I do to get duplicates off there for good?

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • How to finally get rid of duplicate songs.

Hello and thank you ahead of time,
I started this thread because I know I not the only person who has this problem.
How can I get itunes to recognize that two songs that are the same have been imported? and then have it delete one of them.
    Thank you,
    Thor

    To find duplicates:
Select an item below Library or Playlists, and then do one of the following:
    • Choose File > Show Duplicates to find every instance of a song from the same artist from any album in your collection. For example, the same song could appear on the artist’s album and on a movie soundtrack or a compilation album.
    • Press the Option key and choose File > Show Exact Duplicates to find multiple copies of the same song (if, for example, you inadvertently imported the song twice).
To see all items again, click Show All at the bottom of the iTunes window.
You have to manually delete the one's you don't want.

  • How do I get rid of duplicate songs on my iPad that cannot be deleted?

I bought an album very recently off iTunes (Lana Del Rey - Paradise Edition), and when I sync the album along with all my other songs from my mac to my iPad, the album has every song duplicated, with the second song of every copy unable to be played and so the iPad automatically skips these songs. When I try to delete them off the iPad by swiping to reveal the delete button, nothing happens. However I can delete the original songs that were copied from which then leaves me with an entire album with every song skipping the next!
So, my question is, how do i solve this?
I've tried restoring the iPad, unchecking and checking the album between syncs, but to no avail.

  • How do i get rid of duplicate songs on my ipad that are not in itunes

I have multiple devices and recently joined iCloud and iMatch.  My problem is that on my iPhone 4 and iPad when I connect they show that I have 4800 songs on them.  I only have 1400.  The extra songs are not on itunes and are not on the devices.  If I select the device drop down and the look at music I can see all 4800 and it's multiple duplicates of songs that I own with a Syncing symbol by them.  I can not select them, delete them or anything.  But they are taking up space on my devices according to iTunes.  iDeas?  This is on a PC Win 7

    Hello courtney_rae33,
It sounds like you have deleted song music from your iTunes library on the computer but after syncing the phone to your computer the songs are still on the phone. From what you describe it seems as if iTunes and the iPhone are set to Manually Manage the content. This article will help you determine of that is the case:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. If your device isn't visible in the upper right corner of the screen, choose Library.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos."
    Click Apply.
Manually add or remove content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
After following the steps above, you can add individual songs, videos, and playlists from iTunes to your device. To add content to your device:
    Select your device.
    Click "On this Device."
Then choose "Add to" in the upper right corner.
While viewing the media in your iTunes library, if you drag a song, video, TV show, or Movie a sidebar will appear on the right. You can drag content onto the device.  You can also create and modify playlists directly on the device.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How to create a playlist *with* duplicate songs

I have a practice where I need to play a playlist with duplicate audio tracks.  The audio tracks are not duplicated in the iTunes app and I don't want to duplicate them as audio tracks.  I only want to create a playlist that will play the same audio track at different points in the playst.  For example...
    Announcement of beginning
    Round 1
    Announcement of task1
    John Doe 1
    John Doe 2
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes

    John Doe 3

    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 3
    Announcement of task1
    John Doe 5
    John Doe 6
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 2
    Announcement of task2
    John Doe 7
    John Doe 8
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
As you can see... I need to be able to duplicate the playlist audio tracks at certain points in the playlist to create the event that I need for that day.
The problem is that iTunes sees that a duplicate track is put into the playlist and doesn't allow it.  I end up with this as I can not readd an audio track that I have in the playlist already.

Is there no way to tell iTunes to allow duplicate audio tracks in a playlist?

Smart playlists and playlist folders won't hold duplicate entries, but it should be possible to put the same track more than once into a regular playlist. Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and click the button Reset Warnings... iTunes should now warn you when you try to add duplicate items to a playlist, but you should have the option to add the items anyway.

  • How do you prevent file upload duplicates?

    Portal 3.0.9
    SunOS 5.8
    All,
Has anyone implemented a file upload portal that checks
to make sure the same file has not already been uploaded.
I currently have set up a portlet that allows a user to
upload files to a database table, but now I would like to
make sure the user is not sending duplicate files to the
table. I'm thinking of using JavaScript to capture the
filename and store it in the table and checking for
duplicates. Maybe, even setting up the file name column
as an index. All thoughts are welcome...
