How do I properly change a Mac's name?

My laptop (a MacBook with Tiger) was assigned a name when I first activated it. I am using it as an airport router (using a mobile broadband system, via a "modem" connected to the laptop to access the internet) with two iMacs. One of the iMacs has the same name as the laptop. I found I had problems with the airport network, because of the common name.
I changed the name of the laptop, using Sharing in Preferences to "Eric's Laptop". However, the name seen by the airport connection on both iMac's remains as it originally was, and I continue to have problems with the airport network.
How do I properly change the name of the laptop so its network name is, indeed, changed?

Thank you Baby Boomer, Texas Mac Man, and Neville Hillyer. I have taken those actions, now several times. They have not changed the laptop's name, _as seen_ on the AirPort drop-down on the right of my iMac menu bar, and the problem continues.
When I first bought and activated the laptop and used it for this purpose, I ran into this same problem. After hours of frustration, since the laptop was still under warranty, I called Apple Service, and a helpful and knowledgeable support technician walked me through a very different and simple process that did change the name as seen by the other computers on the AirPort network. At that time, I asked why that information was not available anywhere for Mac customers, and he did not know. I (obviously) do not remember what that process was.

You can't change it in one step. Sign out of the one now on the Mac, sign onto the right one.

So, I made a temporary .mac account as a trial. I decided to buy a 1 year subscription. I went to upload the webpage I created using the temporary .mac name using the NEW .mac user name and I can't figure how to get iWEb to recognize my new .mac user name.

Under System Preferences > .Mac are you signed in as the .mac account that you want to use? I believe that is what iWeb uses to log in and upload the site.

How does iSync recognise changes in Mac and phone

Hi all,
After getting a brand new cellphone Motorola V3X, i managed to transfer all contacts from my MAC address book to the phone via iSync.
However, i noted the following:
1. Let say in MAC address book there is an entry called
"sarah jessica" (as first name) and "parker" (as last name), after sync and transferred to phone, the phone first name becomes "sarah-jessica" while last name remains. The same applies when 2 words appeared in last name, and it will be separated with "-" in phone after sync. Any idea?
2. Assuming both phone and MAC address book are in sync, and i made changes to contact A in MAC then later made a different change in contact A in phone. If i sync, which entry will be considered as the latest and how does iSync differentiate it?

It's difficult to answer your question directly, because not all sync schemas and their extensions are public. I think Julian is absolutely correct when he points to the behavior you see being the result of Motorola's implementation of contact records. Their structure is generally more restrictive—far less flexible, actually—than those of others like Nokia and SONY Ericsson, and Apple programmers and developers must work within the bounds of these implementations when matching data records through iSync. Some of the issues are very clearly Motorola's alone, and some are likely generic Symbian issues.

How do I properly change the server name in mountain lion server?

I need to change my server name to a FQDN, but tried this with Lion server in the past without success. I know in lion you'd use server app, but that's no longer avaiable in mountain lion server and I want to make sure I get this right the first time.

I was able to get everything working with some assistance from Apple's enterprise support. After changing the host name, the DNS was still not resolving properly and I couldn't turn on open directory so that I'd be able to start profile manager. The DNS interface is considerably different than that in previous versions of server. The network was set to manual ip with dhcp, which was pulling back an external IP. Overriding the DNS info coming in via the dhcp, setting it to localhost, resolved the issue.

How do I programmatically change the plot legend names on my xy graph?

I have a need to change the names/labels on my XY Graph's Legend at run time. This is because plot 0 is not always the same set of data. I have searched high and low for a couple days now to no avail. The closest thing I've seen is overlaying a string over the plot legend, but I would prefer to do change the property of this box. Any help would be appreciated.

Question about ".Mac User Name" info in System Preferences/ Accounts

This is really bugging me. When I first purchased the mac mini I set the ".Mac User Name" info in System Preferences/ Accounts to the right name and wrong password. My .Mac Mail application works fine. but when I reenter the name and pass in ".Mac User Name" info in System Preferences/ Accounts and close/reopen I still see the old password reappearing. This does not affect anything, but it sure ticks me off a bit. Any idea why it is holding on to the old password? Is there any way I can resolve this so that it shows my current .Mac info correctly? Thanks for any help in advance.

This password is probably kept in Keychain. I changed my Mac User Name and password in Account preferences, and, after closing the Preferences, a new item appeared in Keychain/session with the new name and password

I'm doing this because my friend told me that zeroing out the drive can nap bad sectors and also later for some kind of diagnostics usage of the drive or something like that he wasn't really clear
My friend was really specific he said choose the option that writes zero's once over the drive that is plenty good enough I was inclined to use the maximum seven write ...I just want to make sure the drive has no bad sectors and that's it's it's zeroed out for possible future diagnostics usage or something that he said was usable later
he also advised me to run a test on it but I don't have the software you mentioned or the software that he has… So I may have to take the drives over to his house unless you have some kind of free software that's easy to use that you could suggest that will not only zero out the drive but test the drive completely

I called Apple and they said that they know about this problem. It's a problem with iCloud which their Engineers know about. (there was a new iCloud release, hence...) No ETA for a fix yet. I asked that this be escalated so Engineering doesn't put it at the bottom of their fix list. I talked to a Senior Advisor and mentioned to them to have QA check their regression tests as this has happened before to me (the problem just didn't take this long to resolve). I like to use green too for important stuff, so I've resorted to creating a new calendar using the normal calendar green for events going forward. They could have picked another color besides green to have this problem with and I wouldn't have been so upset. ;-)

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

Open terminal and type the followings;
1) sudo ifconfig bridge0 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx(it will be your new mac address)
2) Type your password to confirm
3) ifconfig bridge0 |grep ether (to see if change is successful)
PS: *This should with your thunderbolt adapter, but its not working usb to ethernet adapters without installing required drivers.
** You may need to do these steps every time you boot your mac.

Open Accounts preferences. Create a new user account with the name and username of your choosing as well as your own password. Be sure to give the new account Admin status. Log out of the old account and log into your new account. Now, delete the old account.

The POA / MTA / GWIA / Web Access agents are all running on this server (small environment) Anyways, the IP addressing is changing and I need to change the IP address on the groupwise system and I haven't done it since GW5.5 and that was about 8 years ago or so, and can't remember what the steps were to do this properly. Anyone have any suggestions on the best approach to get this whole thing changed over to new IP scheme and working again? (obv, need to change physical ip address of the NW6.5 server itself in IPCONFIG, reinitialize system, change necessary files to get iManager working etc, but not sure how to go about changing the GW side of things to make sure all agents come back up on the new scheme.
