How do I properly eject my USB drive?

So I was on my USB drive and stuff and I tried to safely eject it (dragging into the trash, pressing the eject button in Finder). When I think it's safe to pull it out, I pull it out. But then a message appears that I didn't properly eject my flash drive, even though I clearly did. Is this something to worry about or is my Mac just acting up again? My Mac is from 2009 and my usb drive is a SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16 GB, btw -3- the suggestion thingy says to write that so i did ....

First, please use normal fonts and sizes here. Your selection is hard to read.
Always eject a device in one of these ways:
CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the device and select Eject from the context menu.
Select the device's Desktop icon and drag it to the Trash.
Select the device then select Eject from the Finder's File menu.
Select the device then press COMMAND-E.
Select the device and press the Eject button on the keyboard.
Do not remove the device until its Desktop icon has disappeared. Don't be in a hurry.

  • How do I eject a USB drive?!

Just bought a time capsule which Im pretty happy with, bar a couple of things.. 1 being I don't seem to be able to eject the USB drive thats plugged into it. I don't want to simply pull it out as that isn't very wise at all
    any tips?
    thanks!
    Nick

doh! heres me reading other threads where it says I should be able to eject it from the Airport utility and it looks like I can simply right click and eject from the finder! :-)
(Im assuming that means its ejected anyhow - it stills appears in the list on my time capsule once ejected)

Cannot retrieve file after I forgot to properly eject the USB it was on--what can I do to get this file to open?  Thanks for helping me out b/c it would take days to re-create this file!  IMAC 10.5.8 Excel File using .xls extension.

    Hi Sue,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Try a Repair on the External USB Drive.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • How do I set up my USB drive to work on airport

How do I set up my USB drive to work on airport

First be sure that your external USB HDD is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT32 as these will be the only two disk formats that the Extreme can share out to network clients.
Once you verified the format, you just need to connect the HDD to the USB port on the Extreme. Finally you would use the AirPort Utility to enable the HDD for sharing.
For AirPort Utility v6.x: Start the utility > Select your AirPort Extreme > Select Edit > Select the Disks tab. Verify that the utility correctly identifies your HDD. Then select (check) the "Enable file sharing" option, and then, select Update. After the base station updates, you should be able to "see" the shared HDD in Finder on your MacBook Pro.

  • I am getting error message "Disk Not Ejected Properly Eject "FreeAgent GoFlex Drive" before disconnecting or turning it-" randomly.

I'm getting a "Disk Not Ejected Properly  Eject “FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” before disconnecting or turning it…" message at random times.  I have seen other comments about this happening after the iMac wakes from sleep.  However, this is happening to me throughout the day even when I am working on the iMac.
The iMac is up to date with OS X Version 10.9.  I had recently switched from a 500GB to a 3TB Drive, both are Seagate.  I have never had this issue prior to the switch.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I verified/repaired in the Utility Disk and a message popped up indicating the GoFlex looks "OK".

No, I am not on the USB3 interface.  I contacted Seagate and they indicated that there is no known issue with OS X 10.9.  In my case, they are willing to send me a new Drive, since I just received the GoFlex on 12/06. Will post an update when I install the new one.  Hopefully this will solve my issue.
I suggest you contact Seagate, if you haven't already, directly.  The representatives are very helpful.  Good luck.

  • How to install Tiger to external USB drive?

    Hi!
I have external 80 GB USB 2.0 LaCie Hard Drive and want to install Tiger to it. But i have some problems...
    I have bootable install DVD.
I'm inserting it, waiting, then choose language.
Then I'm starting Disc Utility, formatting whole drive to HFS+ filesystem, and then install Tiger to a new partition. All seems to be great, installation finishes, and says that i need to restart. Restaring... And my computer boots from DVD, not from HDD... Also, i looked in Startup Disc util, but thre is no my HDD, only boot DVD.
Also i've noticed in install log when installing process comes to end, some strange words:
    -Disc partition is not MBR
    -Can't set bootable device /dev/disk2s10
disk2s10 - its my HFS+ partition in external drive.
Maybe im doing something wrong? Wrong partitioning, etc.?
    Please help me.

Without knowing how or what was on the USB drive (FAT32?) you might need to go into Disk Utility -> Partition -> Options and set the drive format to "GUID" from whatever it is now.
that should do the trick. PPC uses "APL" format which won't allow installing on an IntelMac.
I think "MBR" is probably "Mac Boot Record".
    Anyway, give that a shot.

  • How are there files, on my USB drive, that show up on a PC but not on my macbook?

I have a usb drive containing several files.  When I insert it into a pc, all the files are displayed.  When I insert it into my macbook, only some of the files are there.  Why is this?  How can I set it so that all files are visible?  I want to delete files.  But, I can't delete files that I can't see.

Yeah, it piosses me to no end too. And haven't been able to disable indexing and general crap-filling of FAT32/ExFAT volumes by the OS. So, I use the following shellscript on Terrminal to purge the stuff before ejecting the stick:
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ `pwd` == $HOME ]
      then echo "Invalid directory: $HOME"; exit;
    fi
    echo "Cleaning `pwd`..."
    rm -rf .[a-z]*
    rm -rf ._*
    rm -rf .[A-Z]*
Since each USB stick may have a different name, I have to manually CD to the appropriate directory inside /Volumes before running it. And it has protective code to protect my azz if I accidentally run it on my home directory and attempt to shoot myself in the foot.

  • How to use Boot Camp without USB drive?

    Hi
Trying to install Windows via BootCamp, I came across a real nuisance: where I am, the only way to connect to the Internet is using a dongle. When the dongle is in, there's no way to squeeze another USB plug next to it; hence I can't let BootCamp download support files straight onto a USB drive. Needless to say, if I insert the USB drive, I can't use the Internet...
Is there any way that BootCamp can first download those files elsewhere so that I can then copy them onto the USB drive once the dongle is removed?
In case anyone's wondering, I can't get hold of a USB extension cable either at the moment...
    Many thanks for any suggestions!

  • How can I use a existing USB Driver in NI VISA 3.0

    Hello,
we have an ftdi USB driver for our measurement device.
The FTD2XX.sys is registred in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers
    Also I have a FTD2XX.dll and an FTD2XX.inf file.
But I don´t know how can I register them in NI LabView or VISA.
Have I to do a new *.inf file for VISA?
    Thank you
    Cedric

You can either use the manufacturer-supplied driver or NI-VISA to control your USB device but not both. If you have installed your device, each time you plug it in the FTD2XX.inf will associate your device with FTD2XX.sys. Then, you can use FTD2XX.dll to talk to your device using the call library function node. The DLL usually contains a whole bunch of useful functions that someone else already designed to talk to your device. This is the easier route and I would recommend it if you already have the DLL and the installed driver.
The second method would be to uninstall or disable the driver for your device and create an .inf file with NI-VISA Driver development wiazard. This .inf file will tell Windows to use VISA as your device driver. You will, however need the vendor and product ID of the device to use VISA as your driver. The details of this are outlined in the NI document "Using VISA 3.0 to control your USB device."
The drawback of this method is that VISA is just an API to talk to your device and you have to implement the communication protocol to talk to your device. This might take some time to do.
This is why I recommend the first method. Someone else already implemented the driver for your and you just have to use the functions from the dll to implement your application.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to create a system recovery USB drive?

My U845-S406 crashes every 15 minutes with a BSOD referencing iastor.sys.
Multiple diagnostics say it is all good.
Multiple virus softwares say it is clean.
It crashes even quicker in safe mode.
I have the latest Toshiba raid drivers, but updated to a more recent Intel set.  The error changes to iastora.sys, and goes back to iastor.sys when I switch back to the Toshiba drivers.
I booted holding down 0, and told it to restore; but it promptly crashes.
I made a W7 disk and tried to load it, but it promptly crashes.
As a last resort before throwing the computer out,  I want to create a system recovery USB drive, format the harddrive and try recovering from the USB; but I don't have the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator (or any Toshiba software at all...)  I downloaded a copy and ran it, but it says I don't have a HDD Recovery Area.
I know I have one because 1) I can access it by hold down 0, and 2)Partition Wizard showes it.
So, how can I create a system recover USB drive (or make Recovery Media Creator find the HDD recovery Area...)
Interestingly, the other day it spent 90 minutes installing a W7 update without a problem, but crashed immediately when done.  Maybe that means something.

Please zip up a few of the corresponding *.dmp files from the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and attach them to your reply.
So the procedure in the section Creating recovery media (p. 53 in the User's Guide) doesn't work? Exactly where does it go wrong?

  • How to Install OS Tiger on USB Drive

    Hi,
I tried to install Mac OS X Tiger on the newly purchased USB HDD. When I try to run the install from within Leopard, the setup will prompt me with destination hard drive. It doesn't allow me to select the USB drive and says "It cannot install on external drive because it cannot boot from this volume".
How can I install on the external drive?
    Thanks, Pj

I need some help. I backed up my wife's iMac to an external USB drive using Superduper. It said it created a bootable clone. However, when I go to startup disk in the Preferences, the disk does not show up.
I see people talking about whether it's GUID, and I don't believe I set it up as that. Didn't know I needed to. I can't believe you simply can't boot from a USB 2.0 external like a Firewire.
Anyway, there's very little space left on this external, and I need it to be bootable. Can anyone help?

  • How can I use an external USB drive on my Macmini with Boot Camp and Lion/Windows 7?

I have a MacMini (Last model with a disk drive). The Mini has Lion and Windows 7 installed using Boot Camp. I want to attach a 350GB, USB, HP Personal Storage Device (Hard Drive) to the computer and be able to use it in both Lion and Windows 7 mode. The USB drive is formatted for Windows 7. I only want to use it for storage and back-up purposes for both operating systems. It would be nice if I could access the total disk from either system without having to reboot to change operating systems to view Windows 7 files and reboot again to view Lion files. Can anyone offer any guidance or any informational websites to help me? Thank you for any help!!

Yes, you’ll be able to do that.
