to copy photos from your iPhone to your computer you can either use photo stream via icloud and the icloud control panel for windows see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html OR plug your phone in and open up your "my computer" and navigate to your iPhone it should provide you with a way to view the photos just like any digital camera.

Replying to my own post - heh. I downloaded iExplorer (http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/) which allowed me access to the files on the phone and there was the phantom movie in the DCIM folder. Deleted it, and all is well - although I still have 0.65gb of Other in iTunes.....

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:

By postcard format do you mean crop the picture into a postcard shape?
If so, here is one way: Activate the Rectangular Marque tool. Set Style to Fixed Aspect Ratio, and enter the dimensions for Width & Height. In this example I used a standard postcard size of 6" x 4.25". Open your picture, draw out the rectangle, and Image > Crop. The picture will now be in the 6 x 4.25 proportion.
To get it to the actual 6" x 4.25" size, do Image > Resize > Image Size. Check the Constrain Proportions Box, and enter either the true Width or Height; the other dimension will change accordingly.
If this is not what you are trying to do, please be more specific.

I've just bought an iphone 5, my first ever iphone after always having other makes of smartphone. Great phone however, I can't believe how user unfriendly it is with photos and music!! I want to use a song from my pc as a ringtone, normally a straightforward process with other phones: send to phone, right click and save as ringtone - simple. Not with the iphone though. After trawling the internet and following numerous guides I have still not managed it !!
Secondly, I have spent over an hour trying to put a single photo onto my phone but only managed to put the entire folder containing the photo I want. I then spent ages working out how to remove them all so am now back to square one. Surely there must be a simple few clicks to put a single photo onto the phone!!
Any advice and help would be gratefully appreciated as I'm losing the will to live. And does everything have to go through itunes??

No such thing as a *simple few clicks with the iPhone* period! You cannot use your music as a ring tone. If you buy a ring tone from iTunes (or anywhere else) make sure it's under 30 seconds long or else it wont work. ( I just wasted .99 on a ringtone that was 1.43 long and can't use it ) Then if you do manage to finally get a tone synced to your iPhone you'll soon discover that it *REMOVES* all your music from your phone! Tried putting my music back and it removed the new ringtone! I'm personally dealing with this issue now What's worse is what you have to go through to make the new purchased ringtone useable on your iPhone. Like, renaming the music file from *m4a* to m4r* It's a total PITA and I'm ******!!!
As for adding individual pictures to your iPhone. I can't help you there because I've yet to figure it out. I've had an iPhone for 2yrs now.

Why must a brief detailed technical question be summarized? Why cant I do the supposedly simple task of downloading "all" of my photos from my 64g iPhone 5s onto my Dell Latitude E6410 laptop in one simple press of the button process? Instead my Laptop is always trying to download mega gigabytes of all my laptop photos onto my iPhone. I am now totally convinced that the Apple Corporation has implemented a scheme trying to "force" me, and every other Apple customer, to buy more iCloud storage instead of allowing us the cheaper option of storing our own photos on our own lap tops and our own external hard drives. If this is the case then Apples tactics are back-firing, and I for one, will never buy another complicated, user-unfriendly, rotten capitalistic Apple product again. If there is a simple way of downloading all of my photos onto my laptop in one simple move then why cant it "simply" show you how to do it, like all the other companies smart phones do? Or whats wrong with the FREE photo stream conduit that over air transfers images to your pc pictures folder (And you don't need to buy any extra storage ever) the images just transfer !
Also what is so difficult with plugging in to a USB socket and having images automatically uploaded/downloaded into your Pictures folder ?
Unless of course your PC USB is a slow 1.1 socket !
True the sync process is all encompassing rather then delta but it does mean true syncing

I copied my photos onto my hard drive from my mac about 3 months ago. I just plugged my hard drive in to put my pictures back onto my mac but it is giving me a message when trying to open up the photos from the hard drive that states

THere are lots of totally different ways to "copy your photos" onto a hard drive
Exactly how did you do that? The correct way to move an iPhoot library is to verify that the hard drive is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then to drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to it - reverse to bring it back - just drag it from the EHD to the pictures folder (default location) on your computer
Why are you doing this?
you can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database - depending on what has been going on this might resolve things
