How do I put library on external hard drive

I want to put some of my photos in my iPhoto 6 library on my external hard drive. I've tried exporting, dragging, etc but my originals never end up on the external hard drive. How do I do this?
I'm a novice with the external hard drive. I have an iMAC, Powerbook and external hard drive. I've been putting the external hard drive on the iMAC and when I want to use it with the Powerbook then I just eject it from the iMAC and attach it to the Powerbook. How do I hook everything thing together at once? Do I just USB the Powerbook to the iMAC? Then how do I move things from one machine to the other?

If you can get the two computers connected together with an ethernet cable and get the computer with the external HD to see the other you can create a 3rd library, located on the external HD and merge the other two libraries into it to create a primary library. You will need to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy the rolls of each library into the new one on the external HD like iPLMRollXfer.mp4.
Once you get the two libraries merged into the one on the external HD you can do the following on each machine to link to it:
1 - move the library from the Pictures folder to the Desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to locate a library.
3 - navigate to the external HD and select the iPhoto Library folder there.
Once you've done that with each machine and are satisfied that the library on the external HD is complete you can delete the two libraries from the two Macs.
REMEMBER the previous is to create one library on the external HD for use by both Macs and to remove the old libraries from the Macs when done.

  • How to transfer itunes library via external hard drive?

How do I transfer my entire itunes library to a new pc via an external hard drive? I want to also keep the library on my old pc. Because my library is about 30gb I thought that getting an external hard drive would be the easiest way to do this. Are there any other options?

Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows
Then copy the iTunes Folder to your external drive. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
Disconnect your external drive and connect it to your new computer, copy the iTunes folder to the new pc. When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • How to populate iTunes library on external hard drive onto new MBP.

I have a Powerbook G4 that is slowly dying. I have a new MBP that I want to populate my iTunes library onto without moving my music off my external hard drive. I've tried holding down the OPTION key while launching iTunes and selecting the iTunes Library file, but it seems to only load songs that were added in 2006 or later.
How do I get a current iTunes Library file that will populate all the songs?
Or am I going about this the wrong way?
    Thanks!!

i want to keep the music on the external HD, and I have linked the MBP iTunes account to the external HD (as in where to look for music), but I just can't get the whole library to populate into the new iTunes account.

  • How to transfer Photo Library to external hard drive?

How do I transfer IPhoto Library and/or albums onto External Hard Drive? I have been selecting photos and re-creating Albums as Folders. But I want to delete photos from my MacBook Air and want all the content and information transferred with the photos, which is not currently happening. I downloaded a free trial of a program that promises to do this transfer but cannot find it/use it. Help!

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to get ITunes library from external hard drive to new PC

have ITunes folder from dying PC saved on external hard drive. PC now dead. New PC has Windows7, and have loaded ITunes.
Now need to know exactly what to do to get all that lovely music from the external hard drive onto the new Windows7 PC. The ITunes folder has the following inside it:
ITunesMusic folder in it, which looks like all the music is in there.
    Album Artwork folder
    ITunesLibrary.itl
    ITunesMusicLibrary.xml
    ITunesLibraryGenius.itdb
    ITunesLibraryExtras.itdb
What do I do, and in what order? I'm thinking I should NOT need to plug in the ipod, since everything is saved on the external drive. (I don't want to accidentally wipe the Ipod, since I'm pretty sure it is set to automatically sync.....)
the whole point of doing frequent backups was to not lose anything. Note: did NOT use apple for backups, just regular backup program. Can see the files and folders, just need to knkow what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Drag and drop the whole folder into the iTunes application.

  • How to Acess iPhoto Library in External Hard Drive thru Airport Extreme and iPad

My iPhoto library is currently in an external hard drive that's connected to an Airport Extreme.  I want to be able to access this library thru my iPad.  Is there any way to accomplish this?  I have spent endless hours online looking for an answer, but so far I have not found it.
Thank you so much for the help !!!

It may sound like a stretch, but there are so many people who have already solved more complex tasks than this one.
I can't believe the only solution to this problem is to use LogMeIn/GotoMyPC or other remote control applications to access the library thru my MacBook Pro.   There is also an app for iPhones called NetPortalFile and I can view the individual pictures (but it ***** because I can only see one at a time and my wife has 60,000 pics...).  Almost there with solutions, not integrated all yet that I know of and that's why I am asking.
I'll keep waiting, maybe someone has already figured it out or they are working on an app :)

  • How to copy iPhoto library to external hard drive?

I have been trying to copy my iPhoto library to a Seagate external hard drive. I cannot seem to drag and drop the iPhoto library from a Finder box across to the external hard drive. The hard drive has enough space/capacity to hold the library contents but will not allow me to drag and drop. Any tips?

Not without more information - what happens - what errors do you get - if the external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)?
This procedure has been used thousands of times successfully
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?

I have saved many photos to an external hard drive for security. I would like to store at least some of them in iCloud so I have direct access from Photos. Is this possible please?

how do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?
Just like you'd do it with iPhoto.  Drag the photos or folder of photos into the open Photos Library window or onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
If you have the iCloud Photo Library activated in Photos the new photos will be copied to the online iCloud Photo Library along with the rest of the photos in your library.  Remember, with the iCloud Photo Liberty it's all the photos or none.  You may have to purchase additional iCloud space to store all of your photos.

  • What should I put on an external hard drive?

So I have a 13" Macbook Air with a 128 GB SSD. I installed a few games and I'm now at half full. I wanted to install WoW today (I know macs aren't meant for gaming) but seeing how it takes up 20GB, I decided against it.
Now I want to get an external hard drive to put any excess stuff on there so I can free up my SSD space and install WoW and SC2.
What should I put on my external hard drive? How would I go about putting the stuff on there? Obviously it'll load slower but for example I'd put photos and music.
Can you run games from an external drive? I know it'd be best if I just left the games on the SSD for the load time and to not have any lag but I'm just wondering.
Can you run programs such as iTunes from an HDD?
Finally, can make a windows partition on the SSD and put all my windows stuff on the same HDD that I'd use for my OSX?

  • HT1660 How do I run itunes from external Hard drive?

How do I run itunes from external hard drive. I only have ssd on PC and media is too large to fit

    You do not.
iTunes, like all programs is installed on the C drive.
You can store the media on another drive.
Assuming you are moving an existing library from another computer:
Move or Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer and put it where you want it.
Install iTunes using the default options.
Hold <SHIFT> while launching iTunes.  It will prompt to create a new library or locate an existing library.
Select the option to locate an existing library.
Point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file in the iTunes folder that was moved from the old computer.

I keep running out of space on my imac (320mb)
I have my movies on a Lacie hard drive.
How do I put itunes on the hard drive?
    Thanks

iTunes has many components.  The two main ones are the application itself (which is what ones means when ones says "iTunes") and the library which is a set of files and folders.  I take it you want to move the iTunes library (you cannot run iTunes the application off a non-boot drive).
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
My one hesitation regarding the above is it sounds like you already have some things on the external drive and you have not shared with us the details of your setup.  You have already modified itunes from its standard behavior and this can sometimes introduce problems.

  • Problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive.

Help - I'm having problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive. The drive appears on the desktop but when I try to drag in my i-tunes music folder I just get the circle with a line through it symbol. I can drag items from my mac to a different 4 gig memory stick with no problems. I put some music onto the hard drive from a windows p.c. and that dragged into my i-tunes fine. Any help would be much appreciated.

i'm guessing the external HD is NTFS formatted, which your Mac cannot write to (read only).
you will either have to reformat it (FAT32 or, better yet, for Mac) or install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver.

  • How do i import to a external hard drive

Hi in I movie how to i import to a external hard drive from my video camera as i find it takes to much room on my imac. thanks

    Hello there foxcub 6,
It sounds like you want to be able to import your video to an external drive rather than your internal drive to save space.
First, you'll need to create an iMovie library on your external hard drive. Take a look at the "Create a new library" section here: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
After you've created the library, you can import media directly to it, and copy existing projects and events to it as well. You can learn more about importing here:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#movbc953953e
Step 6 outlines how to Import to a different library specifically:
    Do one of the following:
To choose an existing event to contain the imported clips: Choose the event from the “Import to” pop-up menu at the top of the Import window.
To create a new event to contain the imported clips: Choose New Event from the “Import to” pop-up menu, type a name for the new event, and press Return.
To learn more about events, see Organize your events and projects.
The Import To dropdown is at the top of the Import window that opens when you click File > Import.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,Sterling

  • How do I a setup an external hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

How do I a setup an external hard drive on my Macbook Pro to my primary hard drive for my iTunes library?
I ask this because every time I try to do this it my Mac book pro always wants to use the external hard drive I plug in as a time machine back up rather than my primary hard drive. I figured it would be cheaper and more efficient to use an external hard drive rather than have apple charge me an arm and a leg to replace and upgrade my current hard drive in my Mac book pro.

I responded to this in your duplicate posting at: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2690347
I recommend giving a first post a chance before posting a second time, especially since it may result in a lot of duplication in effort from the people volunteering their time here.

  • ITunes won't show library on external hard drive

I have just bought a MacBook Pro but I don't know how to get library on external hard drive to show in iTunes...  Any suggestions please?

This is relevant portion of the support document with a bit of editing for clarity.
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
Using a Mac click the icon to open iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the Option key.
You should see the following screen:
If iTunes opens normally, close it and try again.
Once you've got that dialog you have two options. If your previous iTunes library database is stored on the external drive use Choose Library to browse to it and open it. If you only have the media folder on the drive then use the Create Library option to create a new iTunes library at /iTunes on the external, move the media folder to /iTunes/iTunes Media and then add it to your new empty library.
