How do i put Video clips into Imovie, Without Iphoto?

Im using Imovie for a school project, and i need to put video clips into it. But for some reason my mac doesnt have Iphoto, and i've read online that the only way to do this, is through Iphoto??? Does anybody know otherwise?? please help!!

If you have a supported camcorder or camera you should be able to import your video directly to imovie from the camera. If the video is already on you computer, select the imovie File menu, then select import to library and navigate to the movie files you want to import. The article below should help you

How do I get video clips into Organizer from Elements?

I have broken my raw video into pieces in elements but can't get it to import into organizer.
I am using Elements 11 Trial.

The video is actually a football highlight film for our son and came to us as a single mp4 file with about 60 plays of video on it.
What I am trying to do is
1) Cut it down into 60 individual videos (which I did and currently have in my project).
2) Save the pieces off as individual video clips.
3) Get the ability to rank/rate each video and select the 25 or so that will make up the final video.
4) Polish/edit those that make the grade.
5) Organize and assemble.
Does this make sense?

Welcome to the forums.
Please import the clip in the project panel, right click on the clip and select new sequence from clip option, you can also drag the clip to new item icon at the bottom of the project panel to create a sequence.

How do I export a video clip to iMovie from iPhoto?

My video clips and photos were imported from my iPhone 5 to iPhoto on my macbook pro. Using iMovie, I can import the photos from iPhoto but am unable to import the video clips from iPhoto into iMovie.
Is there a way that this can be done?

How are you trying to import from iPhoto to iMovie? The movies in your iPhoto Library should appear in iMovie in the Event Library in the section for your system drive as event "iPhoto Videos".
Here the videos from your iPhoto library should be shown, that you last opened in iPhoto; for example with my version of iMovie (9.0.8) the event library looks like this:
Don't you see the videos there? What is your iPhoto version and iMovie version?
As a workaround to import to iMovie you can always select the video in iPhoto and use "File > Reveal in Finder" to show the movie file and then import to iMovie using the Finder. Caution: When importing from the iPhoto library using the Finder, be sure to import to iMovie using the option "Copy files", not "Move files". Otherwise they will vanish from your iPhoto library.

Downloading video clips into iMovie

Is it possible to download video clips from YouTube and network TV clips such as MSNBC (which plays on their own player) to iMovie? If so, how does one go about doing that?

Here's one way
First you can capture the video (FLV) from YouTube using (say) *iSkysoft free video downloader*.
Then use another converter (say) *iSkysoft Video Converter* or Videographer to convert the FLV to MP4 or MOV.
I'm still only getting into the video side...but this seems to work..

Putting Camera clips into iMovie

I have captured some clips with my Sony digital camera (PC-100)and imported them into iPhoto. I can export these clips into Quicktime and play it in the QT player with sound. The clips are in MPEG 1 format.
However, I am not able to import these QT movies into iMovie with the sound intact. The video is imported but the sound is gone. How do I preserve the sound from these MPEG 1 clips?
I have QT 7 Pro but it does not show having an audio track!?

Yes, I did catch the MPEG2 part and did not purchase the software...maybe later when I need it (to play back or incorporate clips recorded in a stand alone video recorder? or DVD!) The free program Streamclips worked great...both on a PC as well as on the Mac. I have successfully made movies out of the camera clips with sound.
I can do it in either one of two ways. The fastest way was just to extract out the sound as an AIFF file and imported that into the soundtrack in iMovie. Curiously, the AIFF sound track was one frame shorter than the video clip but that did not affect the final result of the movie.
Another way was to use Streamclip to convert the MPEG1 file to a DV file and then import the DV file into iMovie. I chose the first way because the clips were already in iMovie and extracting the sound was faster then exporting / importing video. Besides, a DV video file was about ten times bigger than the original camera clip but the AIFF file was quite small.
So the project was a success. Thanks for the help.

How do I put video footage into itunes so I can then put it on my ipod?

I got an ipod nano 3rd gen for Xmas, and although I have sort of worked out how to put songs on it, and some photos, I would like to put some footage of my children on there. My video files are all .MVI
The problem is firstly I think I have to convert them to a certain file?? And then how do I put them into itunes? I am having so much trouble with it all, I just feel like taking the silly thing back to the shops. It works fine, but am having a huge amount of trouble trying to figure everything out.....

But now that I have converted the clip to sucessfully play via Quicktime, and managed to somehow get it into itunes, when I click and darg it over, it says it cannot be played on my ipod and so I have right clikced and selected Convert t Play on Ipod. Will see how that goes and let you know if it was successful.
I thought that by converting it with The MPEG Streamclip, it would automatically work.
Errghhh, I hate all this stuff!

Whenever i enter the key word to search for split, it always shows me how to do split edit, or split screen. I do not want that. I just need to know, how to cut a video/audio clip into two pieces, so that I can cut one of them out of the time line....

There are lots of ways to do what you're asking besides what has been said. You can double click the clip in the Browser. Set In & Out points in the viewer and add the Clip to the sequence. No need to split or cut anything in the sequence.
You really need to learn a bit more before you continue cause this is a pre-noob question. I don't really know how to categorise it.

Importing xbox 360 video clips into imovie 6.0.3sk

Hi, I have an xbox 360 that I would like to import some video clips off of onto my computer using imovie. I have a Powermac G4 with a dual 1.4 ghz cpu, 2 GB of RAM, and lots of HD disk space. I am using an ADS Pyro A/V link for capturing video. I have used this many times in imovie to capture video directly from a TV, VCR, DVD player, etc. For some reason when I hook up the cable from the xbox 360 to the Pyro (using either component connection or composite/RCA connection) and hit play in imovie to preview what's being converted, it can't process it. Sometimes it will show a bunch of pixelated squares, sometimes it won't show anything. Every once in a while it can process the sound, otherwise it doesn't show anything. After a few times, it says the pyro has been disconnected, although it obviously hasn't been. I've also tried directly importing without previewing it during the import, but that doesn't work either. I'm not sure if I need to set something a certain way? But I know you can import from the 360 because there are obviously many video clips floating around the internet taken straight from the xbox.
Anybody know anything about this or have any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Nevermind...I figured it out. There is a little button on the video cable that toggles HDTV on or off. Apparently it has to be off. So if anyone else has this problem, hopefully they can learn from my mistake.

Can not import video clips into iMovie from Photos

I have some clips that I copied from my GoPro to my iPad via the Apple Camera Connection Kit. When I open iMovie there are icons for the clips but iMovie will not import them. The format is H.264. Is there a way of tricking iMovie?

Here is the problem, Im making a movie, I took all the video on my Kodak V610 Camera. I have the clips in .mov format. The clips are stored on an external disk in my iPhoto library.
Your digital camera probably uses MPEG-4 video (compatible with iMovie '08 in combination with µ-Law 2:1 compressed audio (which is not iMovie '08 compatible). While using the MPEG Streamclip MPEG-4 conversion will work, the prefered methof would be to use the QT "Movie to MPEG-4" option in QT Pro (quicker if you have it) or GarageBand (via the "Expert Settings option) to "pass through" you video while converting the audio to AAC (MPEG-4 audio). A mono setting of 64 Kbps with a 44.1 KHz sampling rate is a bit of "overkill" with respect to the original audio but will be quality compatible with what iMovie uses for its output presets.

I am losing sound when I export my quicktime video clip into imovie

I have a sony cybershot camera that also takes video. These videos play fine on quicktime but could not be used in imovie until I converted their format using quicktime pro. However, when I do this I get the video but it drops the sound. I did some investigating and found that the quicktime player keeps the audio and video seperate and for some reason the video is not sent when I change formats (i.e. .mov to mpeg-4). Does anyone know how I can get the sound to transfer as well so I can use the whole video + sound in imovie.

Sony Digital cameras usually save their video files as "muxed" MPEG-1 (MPEG VX) content which is "playback only" compatible with QT applications. Thus, when you use QT based applications to perform your conversion, only the video content makes it through the conversion process. In this case you need to use a third-party, MPEG-based utility to perform your conversions. iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware, and Visual Hub (pay-ware) are all popular Internet downloads which will work for you. iSquint is probably the easiest to use but limits your conversion to MPEG4/AAC and H.264/AAC compression formats which are compatible with iMovie '08. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which is more full featured and allows the use of additional formats such as DV and AIC/AIFF but is not as simple to use.

Dragging a random clip into iMovie without having to import it?

Let me get this out of the way. I think iMovie '08 blows hard. Where's the simplicity of iMovieHD 6? Man, Apple dropped the ball on this one. Anyway, anyone know how why you can't just drag a random .mov, .mp4, or .dv file into iMovie or iMovie's dock icon to import it? It's a small problem, that's annoying. Something that Apple is not known for.

Actually, if the movie is compatible as explained by whatdoyoumeanpi..., then you can "Drag 'n Drop" import a file. Next tim you have iMovie '08 and want to import a DV file, try dragging it from the desktop to the "Named Event" title (i.e., not the Event window). The DV file will be first "moved" (not copied) to the event window and then iMovie '08 will proceed to generate the thumbnails. Remember, if you want to use the "copy" option to import files, you must use the File menu "Import Movies" option and set the import for "copy." This will also work with editable AIC, MP4, M4V, or MJPEG, as well as, Apple Animation and Video files which iMovie will edit but not export properly.
