How do I question mark in dock

I had a problem which left a question mark (?) in the dock which I can't remove. When you click on it the identity shows Quicken 2005. Can' drag it out of the Dock to remove it. Next to it is a symbol for Quicken, which opens Quicken 2005 properly. Anyone know how to remove the unwanted question mark?

Deming... control-click/right-click on that icon in the dock and see if you get a choice to ...quit Application....... then drag it out of the Dock.
or try this...
Delete ....
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
/Library/Caches/com.apple.dock.iconcache.501
• log out/in.This will reset the Dock to its default values, so you will have to reset the preferences for the dock.

  • How can a question marked as "solved" be restored to unsolved status?

How do you remove the “This solved my question” status icon if the answer turns out to be wrong?
Variations of this question can be found in a few discussion threads in the Apple Support Community. I found one very similar question marked as “This solved my question.” Unfortunately the answer was, “It can't be changed.” I have reasons for trying to, at least, get a more definitive answer.
A primary purpose of these discussions is to resolve issues. It is very frustrating to read through long threads that claim to have an answer, only to find that the question was mistakenly marked “solved.” I spent over an hour on a thread that was marked as resolved. The member that made the mistake wanted to remove the “solved” status--even asked for help several times. I finished the thread just in case either issue was resolved. No, neither issue was resolved.
May someone, Apple if necessary, explain how to revert the “solved” status or help fix the problem? If it is a known issue with no workaround, it would be very helpful to have an explanation. Accordingly, are there plans to fix this problem, and a rough idea when? This could be a “This solved my question” hallmark worth celebrating!
Caution: This discussion or parts of it may be revised or deleted while I attempt to find a solution or workaround. Once I've given up or the issue is resolved, I will indicate so, even if it requires a repost. Relevant contributions will be indicated either way.

leonieDF and  seventy one pointed out, (paraphrasing) all posts can be helpful in some way, even if the original owner of the discussion didn't get their question resolved.
Maybe if I keep using this tool I'll change my mind, but most of the time I'd rather save time getting something solved than not.
If anyone believes there are legitimate reasons owners and participants of a discussion would benefit from the ability of the owner to reset the solved status, you're welcome to chime in.
These excerpts from my original post express why I think a change is needed:
Stiltskin!: “The member that made the mistake wanted to remove the “solved” status--even asked for help several times. I finished the thread just in case either issue was resolved. No, neither issue was resolved.”
Stiltskin!: “I didn't find any entry in that thread with an answer to revert the icon. So I got the idea it wasn't common knowledge because so many posters asked the owner to fix it even though the owner kept asking how to do it.”
A big part of why I started this discussion is because I noticed others (and myself) expressed interest in this feature (owner ability to reset a discussion's solved status). If anyone want's to respond to that, please do.
Nobody's brought it up but my discussion's header question doesn't express what I'm talking about now. I would change it if I could. I'd encourage future contributors (if any) to read through the explanation of my question in the first post to understand my perspective beyond "How can a question marked as 'solved' be restored to unsolved status?"
Thank you all for your input!

I'm sorry no-one has answered you yet - I'm afraid I don't know the answer to the question: but I wanted to put into your mind that starting up with AppleWorks at this stage isn't a good idea. The program was 'end-of-lifed' years ago, it won't run on Lion, and some of the document types created in it - Databases in particular - cannot be opened at all by any other program whatever. Word Processing documents can be opened in Pages, and Spreadsheets in Numbers (with some reservations in both cases), but building up a collection of AppleWorks documents at this stage is going to lead to problems later on.
It's difficult to know what to recommend for a PowerPC machine that would still be compatible with modern ones. An older version of Microsoft Office, perhaps, if you can find one which will run on PPC; but most of the modern Word Processors are Intel only. This is something you would need to investigate.

  • Persistent Question Mark In Dock, How Can I Remove It?

I deleted an app ensuring that all that app's files were deleted, using EasyFind.
Where that app's icon existed in my dock, there now appears a question mark, and I cannot get rid of it. Anyone know how?

    HI,
Delete this file from your Preferences folder.
    com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac. If the ? mark is still in the Dock, try dragging it off now.

  • Question Marks in Dock

My computer had been having problems so I went to the genius bar and they reinstalled Leopard for me. Now I'm trying to change all my settings back to how they were but iPhoto and iMovie show up as question marks in the dock. What's going on?

    Hi there,
It sounds like the people at the Genius Bar only reinstalled Leopard. iCal and iTunes are part of Leopard, but iPhoto and iMovie are part of iLife, and will be on the discs that came with your Mac.
Insert the Disc, and choose to reinstall Bundled Software - iLife, which is iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd and GarageBand will then be on your Mac (make sure you run Software Update after installing, there will be updates for each App). You might want to choose just iPhoto and iMovie and save drive space - GarageBand takes up quite a few GBs by itself.
    Hope this helps,
    Jamie

There is a big question mark on my docking bar and when I hover the arrow over it says Garageband. How would I delete this since I deleted the garageband application off my computer.

Thanks! I'm a new mac user and I am still trying to figure out everything. Thanks again.

  • Question Marks in Dock on users network profiles

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem where my user's network profiles have question marks in their docks.
I am running OS 10.4.10 Server on a MacPro with 6 Intel iMacs all running 10.4.10. When I installed the iMacs I used CarbonCopyCloner so all the software is identical. The disk names are the same and all Applications are the same.
When a user works on one of the iMacs and then moves to a different iMac they seem to loose the icons for their applications in the dock, when you click on the icon usually the application will launch and regenerate the icon. Somtimes and mostly with Indesign the icon will become an alias to a folder within the .app!
This is strange behavior! And it does it on around 10 user logins!
    Has anyone got any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    David Lee

I've had similar experiences to many here. Running Tiger server with Tiger clients. Everything was hunky-dory until 10.4.10 update came out. Then I experienced all types of strange dock problems. Not only would I get docks with question marks, some items would have an icon but it would be the wrong one and the bad icons didn't point to the original applications.
This article shed some light on the subject:
    http://benkreeger.com/blog/2007/09/mac-os-x-10410-breaks-dock-app.html
After reading this article and running some tests, I've given up on managing the dock from WGM.
    Here is what I did:
Made the perfect dock. Then edited the plist with a plist editor and got rid of _CFURLAliasData key/string for each application. I then copied this edited plist to the User Template of all clients with ARD. I also copied it to the User Template on the server. Finally I wrote a script that replaced the dock plist with the "new and improved" dock for each user inside of the network homes directory.
Since then, no ? ? ? in dock. No bad icons either. And when a new user is created they get a good dock as well.
Hopefully Leopard won't find a way to mess this up.

  • Application moved error and question marks for dock app icons - related?

i am reposting this in the Mac Pro forum in addition to the Mountain Lion forum as i have been posting various issues on the mac pro here and i have gotten great help in solving them. also i am hoping to put a finishing touch on my computer setup after having done a FRESH INSTALL of the OS on both my computers with a manual migration of data (no Library items) so as to try and resolve old issues. i hope the experts on the list do not mind this posting and/or can offer advice on this specific issue.
i am getting the attached error this morning on my MacBookPro (Mountain Lion) and have gotten it before on my Mac Pro (Lion). i have had to do a fresh install of the OS and a manual migration of my data (no Library settings etc) due to slightly similar issues.
does anyone know what this errror is saying has happened?
i /did/ have an additional internal hard drive on the MAC PRO that Spotlight was indexing and which i had to take off of the Spotlight indexing functionality but this does not explain in any way (since there are no additional HD's on my macbookpro) why it just happened this morning on the macbookpro.
is this related to an issue where there may be QUESTION MARKS (instead of an app icon) in the dock in some of my other software?? i have one of these on my MBP and one on my MacPro even after the fresh install.
    TIA

The Dock stores Aliases to the actual Applications. When you get a question Mark, it is caused by a Bad Link. The Application may have changed versions, moved, or been deleted. There is nothing especially magical about this. You can remove a Bad Link by dragging the link off the Dock, or add a proper link by dragging the Application Icon onto the correct area of the Dock.
OS X Mountain Lion: Customize the Dock
Apple-installed Applications need to remain in the Applications folder so that they remain protected and can be updated properly. The Installer will attempt to add links that point to the current Applications in the Applications folder, but if you have a pre-existing Bad Alias your bad Alias will not be Trashed. This may give you either the "moved..." message, or the Question Mark Icon in the Dock, or a grayed-out Icon with a "prohibited sign" if you have added things not appropriate for this version of Mac OS X.

  • Double question mark in Dock

The font type of the question mark (which appears in the Dock when an item can't be found) seems to be changed since Snow Leopard. That's okay, but when you click on it (to get a dialog box to look for the lost item) the old type question mark will appear straight through the new type, leaving a 'double question mark' in the Dock. Anyone else experienced this graphic glitch..?

    HI,
That's interesting! But one thing that might help is trashing the Dock preference file.
    com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
Maybe now you can drag a ? off the Dock without the glitch.

  • How to Ditch Question Marks in Tools Menu

I have recently noticed the menu bar in all of my folders have
two dimmed out question marks in the menu bar. I have checked
the Customize Toolbar options and do not see any ??? marks
and I they are dimmed so I cannot drag them off. Even new
untitled folders have the two question marks.
I would like to know what I did to cause this problem and
how to get rid of the question marks

command+drag the question marks off the toolbar
Sorry, I should have added that was one of the first things I tried
and there is nothing to grab. The question marks on either side
of the standard menu item are dimmed and cannot be selected
    to drag.

  • Question mark in Dock

I have a ? in the dock for iCal. It cannot be dragged off the dock.
When I right+click on the ?, the options menu pops up yet it never says "remove from dock".
I have deleted the com.apple.dock.plist and the com.apple.dock.db
    I have repaired permissions.
I have used Onyx to delete the Dock cache.
    Any help is appreciated.

Ignore it. It is a side effect of using Onyx. Just put another copy of iCal in your Dock, and make sure it is residin your Applications folder. The Dock is merely a shortcut bar, and so is the Finder's left sidebar. If you dragged an item into that area and a slip of the finger might have moved it to a folder, look in that folder for that item.
You should never clear system caches unless told to as part of troubleshooting on a backed up system.

Question marks on Dock icons indicates a hosed Launch Services database. Delete the current icons and replace them with ones from the apps. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-liner into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit Terminal, and restart:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*

How do I remove the question mark on my dock?
When I move my cursor over it it reads "photos".

Everything in the Dock is an alias.... that is a tiny file that points to the original app, folder or file.
If the original app, folder or file is missing or not accessible in some other way (deleted?), it displays a question mark.
You remove it the same way you remove any icon from the Dock.
Simply drag the icon up away from the doc a couple of inches and let go of it.
It should just disappear with a poof and some clouds.
