How do I re-activate my iPhone?

Two nights ago I was ask to allow and update and I did. After some time a message came up saying the download had failed due to an error. I pressed a link to return my phone to its previous state and it is now locked out. I took it to my provider and they could not rectify the fault. iTunes will not recognise my password so I am kept running in circles as a result. I get a message telling me that 'Find My Phone' is activated and that my phone is now in someone else's hands. Any suggestions?

I removed a device, how do I add it back?
Once you remove a device, it will automatically be added again the next time the device connects to the Internet, as long as your iCloud username and password are configured on the device under Settings > iCloud. If this does not occur, see the "Device does not appear in Find My iPhone" section above.

    Ok, this is a strange one.  I'm from the US and have had my iPhone 4 AT&T) since it was released (mid 2010). No problems.
    I'm overseas (Taiwan) for vacation and about one week into my trip I finally get good WiFi and so I check my e-mail, vpn to home to make sure everything is OK, update apps, etc...  After a while my iPhone appears to reboot, though it is quicker than a normal reboot.  When it is done rebooting, my iPhone comes to a screen titled "Restore Completed" (I didn't instruct it to restore) and it guides me through re-activating.  (grrr.) Of course, when I get to the end, it says "[y]our phone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailble.  Try connecting your iPhone to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes."  (Crap.)  I think "well, I'll hop on my iPad 2 and see what's up and if I can fix this easily."  About 20 minutes later, my iPad 2 does the SAME THING and also cannot activate.
    So I try again in a few minutes.  Same thing.  Now 12 hours later and same thing.  (Oh f---!).
    I don't have my iTunes PC (as I said, I'm overseas) so I cannot try that.  I tried apple.com/support and I have AppleCare but they are being too helpful and only give me telephone support options.  I'm not going to pay international long distance for iPhone support.  E-mail support would be ideal but no joy on that front.
    So I'm reaching out to the community for a lack of any better options right now.  Does anyone have any good ideas how to solve this?  I have searched but found nothing too useful. 
    I was using my phone as my primary camera (not any more).  I really hope my data is there when I do get everything restored (200+ pics from my trip so far).  Unfortunately, I cannot imagine how the 13 hour flight back to the US is going to be without my books and mags because, of course, they are all on my iPad.  Ugh...

    Get a SIM adapter and put the SIM from the iPhone 5 in the iPhone 4. Or get a new SIM from your carrier.

    A new iphone will not do anything until you have activated with a carrier.

    You are out $200 and probably have a stolen phone in your possession.  You should report this to the police and next time buy your phone from a reputable dealer or make sure the previous owner has removed it from his account.  Hard lesson to learn!

    Contact AppleCare (or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
    I'm not exactly sure what procedures are in place for such events, but it may take a while and you may need to provide a death certificate and a note from the executor that the iPad has been willed to yourself.

    Get a sim card from the carrier your phone is locked to. If you don't know what carrier that is, you'll have to call AppleCare to find out.

    I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, but I'll try to answer!    You can either connect to iTunes and set up and activate there, or you can also use the setup assistant to set up your iPhone.  As far as carrier activation, you'll have to follow the protocol that your carrier uses.  Either switch SIM card, or call the number they use to allow device activation.  Is that what you were wanting to know?

    If your phone was previously hacked to unlock it, when you updated the hack was removed and it's re-locked to the original carrier.  The phone will now activate and operate only with that original carrier.

    Make sure the device is powered on and connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network. Then contact the previous owner and ask them to follow these steps:
    Sign in to their iCloud account at www.icloud.com/find.
    Select the device from their Find My iPhone device list by clicking All Devices at the top of the screen.
    Erase the device by clicking the Erase button. This will erase all content and settings from the device. When prompted, do not enter a phone number or message. Click Next until the device is erased.
    When the erase is complete, click "Remove from Account" to remove the device from the account.
    After the device has been erased and removed from the account, you can proceed with the device setup process.

    You never used your iPhone?
    You never logged into iTunes?
    Your AppleID & Password for iCloud&  iPhone should be the same AppleID &Password you used to log in here and post a message.

    You need to enter the id, and the password, of the account that the phone is linked to.
    Did you buy the phone new or used ? If you bought the phone used and it's still linked to the previous owner's account then you will have to contact the previous owner and ask him/her to remove the phone from their account : Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support.
    If you bought the phone new and it's your account then enter the id and password that you were using in Settings > iCloud on it
