What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

I purchased some vectorshapes from Vectorstock, and downloaded .zip files to my desktop. I then extracted the files to the /presets/customshapes folder in Adobe Photoshop CS. (I have Windows 7). I then found out they were not .CSH files but Encapsulated PostScript or .eps files. How can I use them in Adobe Photoshop? Please help

Just user to user....based on past and current history, Adobe Tech Support is not going to help you with a technical issue which is preventing you from using your purchased serial number for Photoshop Elements. Version 12 is not the current version. And, the Adobe Tech Support is limited even for the current version which is 13. If this matter involves a purchased activated serial number trapped on a crashed computer while you are trying to install on a 3rd computer, then probably Adobe Chat Activation can be of assistance. copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.

1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.
2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them
3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
5. Start the installation again.

It will depend on the image. If it was one that was saved as a psd file and has layers (window>layers) {Look in the layers panel and see if you see a layer with a thumbnail that looks like a large T} In this instance, you can double click on that thumbnail to highlight the text then type in its replacement.
If the image is a jpg which does not support layers, transparency or live text, then that would mean that you need to use the selection tools to select that text and fill it with the same color as the background. You can then use the text tool to type in the text you want.
Remember to save a copy as a psd file so you can edit the text at a later date.
