How do I re-install Tiger, but back up my Apps?

How can I back-up all of my files, programs and do a clean install of Tiger? Is it possible to do it that way?
Basically, I want to do a clean install but will want to have all my applications without re-installing all of them. It's quite alot. I don't necessarily want to archive and install. Want to do clean to fix some system issues.

The closest you can get without having to remove all files to an external hard drive is to put in the System install disks and be sure to click Archive & Install.
It will save all applications and files from the previous system, reinstall the system, and allow you to access everything from the old system under a previous system folder which is created in your hard drive.

That means that one or more of these apps was obtained using that ID. All apps are forever tied to the ID used to originally obtain them & they cannot be transferred to another ID. Your only option is to delete this content, then re-purchase using your ID.

• How do I re-install Tiger's original widgets.

While trying to clean things up a little, I lost the orginal widgets that come with Tiger. How does one re-install Them (specifically the clock and the calendar)? Wish they were posted at Apples Dashboard download site. Thank you.

Hello NowWhat:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
I would probably do an archive and install:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
You would, of course, have to update your software to current levels.
I am sure that the widgets are on your software install DVD as well, but I would opt for an archive and install as you indicated you were 'cleaning things up' and there may be other missing components.

• Have Tiger, but lots of old apps... should I pull the trigger?

Yes, I know this is a popular question, but every situation is different and I haven't seen a definitive answer after browsing the forums for a while.
I have the following hardware:
800MHz 17" flat-panel iMac
800MHz iBook
...and the following apps, none of which I can afford to upgrade:
Final Cut Pro 4
Premiere 6.5
Illustrator 10
Photoshop 7
DVD Studio Pro 1.5
Lightwave 7
Cubase SX
Logic Express 7
Flash MX
Office X
ProTools FREE (v5 - OS9 only)
...and probably a couple others I've forgotten.
I was given the retail box of 10.4, and the temptation is SO strong to install it. My two Macs were bought at times when I had an unusual amount of cash, so in the future, I think my limited budget means that the only new Macs I'll have will be Intel machines of er, let's just say an un-conventional nature. I also can't afford to upgrade the apps, although I do have Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 3, although I still plan to use 1.5 most of the time. I may also be able to use Photoshop CS2, but sticking with 7 would be fine.
My biggest problem is with FCP4. I've heard that QT 7 really causes problems, not the least of which is no QT Export to MPEG-2. I of course have Compressor, but get the constant "unable to connect to background process" error, so I rely on QT Export to create .m2v files for DVDs. I guess it's possible that Compressor will magically work in Tiger, but I fear letting go of QT Export. I also dread paying for a new MPEG-2 Playback Component and/or QT Pro license.
I wish I could cross-post this into the FCP and DVDSPro forums, but hopefully enough people here will be able to tell me whether I'm better off not upgrading unless I can get new versions of the apps.
My application for the iMac is audio/video production, and even though it's done well up to now on the stock 256MB, I'll be upgrading the ram soon to the max of 768MB (that's the max without opening up the case, which I'm hesitant to do). I also would like to use the iBook for some field work, and given its 30GB hard drive, I don't see partitioning as an option. On the up side, the iBook does have the absolute maximum of 1.125GB of RAM.
I would of course use an external drive for content on both machines, but at least with the iMac there's an 80GB hard drive that can be partitioned and still have ample room. I currently have most of it assigned to Jaguar, and a 10GB partition for Panther. If I went that route again, the Panther partition would have to be larger than 10GB because most of the apps would be installed under Panther. I guess another issue is whether Tiger and Panther partitions would play nice. Right now I can launch applications that reside in the Panther partition even if I booted into Jaguar and vice-versa, but I wonder if that would confuse Tiger.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice.

I apologize for the tone of my previous post, but it's so frustrating to post a question and have so many people "miss the barn" in their answers. Funnily enough, you actually have a very similar collection of machines to me... I have the 17" FP iMac, the iBook G4, and also a B&W G3 in the bedroom that my fiancee and I use for web surfing. I tried posting in the FCP and DVDSPro forums since those are the most important apps to run, but not much response.
What I ended up doing was creating two equal partitions on the iMac (~37GB each), one for Jaguar and one for Tiger. I actually like working in Jaguar for daily computing tasks, so I'll be installing my older apps there. My recording interface won't work under Jaguar, so my audio apps and all newer software (Soundtrack Pro, Adobe CS2, etc.) will be installed on the Tiger partition. I have no love for Panther, so I've stopped using it completely.
I'm sure switching between the partitions will be somewhat of a pain, but the option-key startup menu should make it easier. As I mentioned earlier, when I got Panther I only made a partition for it rather than upgrading, even though my apps would still run. I just didn't like the metallic look. Apple had started adding brushed aluminum in their hardware, but the Aqua interface seemed to go better with the older "iLamp". It's funny though, I really like the look of Tiger on it, maybe in part because they went back to a blue Apple Menu logo. It also seems quite snappy, although the first few boots on my iBook were painfully slow.
I haven't bothered to upgrade the OS on the B&W... can you really get it up to Tiger? It does have built-in Firewire, but I thought the minimum clock speed was something like 700MHz. It doesn't have tons of RAM either, so I'm probably better off not trying to upgrade. It seems to have a Rev. A motherboard, so it crashes once in a while, not very often though. Also, the Firewire is either disabled or fried, because I've tried an iBot webcam and it couldn't even see it. I'd hazard a guess that the reason the B&W might seem snappier is because the OS knows it's on an older machine and turns off a lot of CPU-draining eye candy that you may not notice (font smoothing, shadow effects, etc.) so it looks about the same but runs faster. Whenever I'd run OS 9 on my iMac it seemed like a screaming little machine compared to the previous Macs I had, but not so much with OS X.
Well, thanks for trying. I kind of figured this out myself, but I would have thought that someone here would have had the same experience as myself and could offer some advice. Seems most of the posts here are about upgrading to Leopard, so I guess I'm a bit behind the curve. For now, it's kind of comforting that I can't (officially) go beyond 10.4.11, since it makes the decision for me. Of course once an app comes along that only runs under Leopard, that sick feeling of being obsolete will probably come back.

• Trying to install Tiger, but it's asking me for a password.....

Hi,
I brought a second hand G4 a while ago, which had been wiped clean and had Mac OS X 10.4.3 installed. I just recently wanted to install a demo version of CS2 but it asked me for a password. The problem is I don't know what the password is and I don't have the original installation discs to change it either. So I thought I'd go out and buy "Tiger" and install that, hoping it would get rid of this problem, but when I went to install it, it asked for my password! ARGH!
If anyone knows how to get around this problem that would be a big help!

• Help i-web how do i re-install my pages back onto my i-web programe

hi guys a simple stupid question my computer crashed last week and i had to re-install everything
i still have my web pages on back up on my .mac account but how do i get them onto my i-web page to work on my site
any help
thanks everyone and keep up the good work
andy

This happened to me as well... Luckily, if its published to your .Mac account, you can go get the actual files and drag and drop, cut and paste until it looks the way you want it to. (make sure to name the pages the same so the links will work.) and then republish.
I now back up my DOMAIN file using BACKUP. I have it place the file on my iDisk and have another copy on a usb keychain drive.
Hopefully if enough people find out the hard way and post on the discussion board, some enterprising lad (or lass) will make an application that will recreate the DOMAIN file; or maybe Apple will work it into the next release of iWeb

• Tried Installing Tiger But Crashed iMac

My sister got a new Macbook and with it she got a copy of Tiger so I decided to put it on my G4 Panther imac. Now, whenever I turn it on I get this message:

I've since been told that you're not supposed to do this but after reading Tiger's user requirement I thought it would be fine.I can't do anything but restart it. Help??!!

Hi ibisbill,I've since been told that you're not supposed to do thisYes, you learned it the hard way.
At this point you should use your your Panther install disk to erase your hard drive and reinstall the original OS. After reinstalling apply 10.3.9 Stand Alone Combo Update (Unless you have some reason to stay at 10.3.2?)
Remember to repair permissions after each install.
Is all of your data backed up? If not, you may be able to save it off by using your sister's Mac and starting yours in Firewire Target Disk Mode
Good luck, post back with any questions.

• I formatted my HD, installing Tiger but I haven't got Disc 2??

Hi guys
I bought my g5 mac 2.0 ghz brand new from an apple store.
Recently I formatted my hardrive and reinstalled OSX. I inserted the disc labelled "Disc 1"from tiger. It then says later I will need disc 2. It prompts me now for disc but but amazingle I don't have it. I didn't know what cds I needed to have when I purchased the mac but now I think the guy didn't give me it. There's another burnt disc he gave me, I think that's the update though.
I don't have disc 2 and why mac is stuck now, what do I do.
I'm waiting on a friend to maybe give his, does it have to be the EXACT version to work.
Thanks guys

ltpowda:
I concur with the advice to return the computer. New computers come with Tiger on one single DVD. CDs are only be obtained if one's computer does not have a DVD drive, in which case Apple exchanges it for CDs for $9.95.
If you decide not to return the computer and purchase disks, make sure you get a Full Retail Version and not computer specific or upgrade disks. You can purchase your disk from the Apple Store or you can get it on CDs with universal installers and single user license from applerescue.
Good luck.

• Re-install Tiger...How?

I'm sure this has been asked at least twice before, but...
And, yes, I searched the forum first for the answer, and no, I have not found a suitable one yet.
Big question, How do I re- install Tiger on my MBP?
Reason-I was advised to do so at a Genius Bar.
Background info-I have an "Invalid Extent Entry" issue. Some app. crashes, mostly Safari. Two or three kernal panics. The Install Disk/Disk Utility/Repair Disk hasn't worked. fsck in single-user mode didn't work this time (although it seemed to before (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2632128&tstart=0)). I get "Disk cannot be repaired". Don't have a c-note for Disk Warrior. Have been advised by multiple people to re-install. I have my original install disks, I just need _specific, detailed directions_.
I'm not interested in keeping my old settings, I want everything new. I can re-install most of my apps from the net, except for the ones that come with Tiger that I assume will be re-installed from the disk. I assume that Software update will get me back to 10.4.11, any firmware updates, etc., won't it? Only have 1 license for a paid-for 3rd part app, saved in an email, will try to backup.
Who can tell me exactly what to do?

Insert your Mac's install DVD, select the hard drive & erase. Then reinstall the files from the DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
BTW - Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem - RAM, a USB device or Firewire device.

• Combo Drive won't read DVDs - How to Install Tiger?

I have an iMac G5 with a Combo drive (Matshita CD-RW CW-8123) that no longer reads DVDs. It handles CDs fine. Other postings offer complaints about Super drives with similar problems, but I have found no solutions. My warranty has expired. I would like to install Tiger, but the installation disk is a DVD. So is the installation disk for iLife '06. Other postings have suggested that installing a new optical drive doesn't always fix the problem. Since I'll be paying for this, that doesn't sound sound like a promising option. Should I purchase an external drive? In the meantime, is there any other way to install Tiger without the DVD? I have other macs that work fine, so I really don't need the DVD to work properly except to install new software. Suggestions are welcome!

An external drive is a great option.
With that, you will likely get a much more capable drive than you would if you were stuck with only the models that will fit in your iMac.
For example, my PC has a 16x Dual-Layer DVD-R drive. But, most Apple compatible Internal drives are still limited to 8x.
So, you could likely get a much faster and more capable external drive than you could an internal drive for the same price.
With an external drive, you can also keep that drive should you get another machine. And, if you have more than one machine, you can connect the drive to whichever machine requires it at the moment. So, essentially, you can upgrade all your systems with just one DVD drive.
And, best of all, you have a product that is covered by it's own warranty, and not subject to how you installed it. And, you don't have to tinker inside your machine.
Also, OS 10.4.x "Tiger" is available on CD-ROM. So, you could send in for the replacement disks if you have the retail box of OS 10.4 Tiger.
From the OS 10.4 "Tiger" sales page:
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95. "
Download the order form.

Hope this helps.

hi,
while trying to install tiger from a dvd , it installs then gets stuck at verifying destination volume everytime. I can't use my new ipod untill i install tiger so what can i do please? Your Mac is not fast enough to handle a modern iPod without laboring through long music syncings. The fastest it will be able to go is 12 Mbps or about 1.5 MByte Per second, or for 192kbps MPEG-3 it will take 45 seconds to transfer a single hour of music if no other USB devices are connected. Your Mac won't necessarily power the iPod. You could sell the iPod, and get one of these models:
or
Which is 30 times faster than the USB 1.1 included with your iBook. Only the iBook G4, and faster Macs have USB 2, which is what newer iPods need for reasonable transfer speed.
Your Mac should be able to install Tiger, but only if you are using the retail version which looks like this disk . The gray disks won't work on your machine. I'd also double your RAM by purchasing RAM that is PC100 SoDIMM made for your iBook from http://www.crucial.com/ or other lifetime warranty vendor that knows iBooks.

• How can I create a tiger partition on a new macbook pro?

I understand how to partition a drive, and install tiger, but how do I install leopard on the other partition without having a leopard install disk? (Having just what came with the laptop)
I was about to buy a new macbook pro when I learned the I wont be able to use my final cut pro 3 with leopard. (thank you apple) I was thinking I could have a bootable partition running tiger that would be used with FCP3, but then how would I get leopard back on the other partition?
It sounds like maybe leopard isnt worth the trouble? Will photoshop 7 work with leopard?

Why is apple doing this? I thought only microshaft pulled these stunts!
It's not a stunt. Apple has always, always done this. A large part of the reason is simply that the Mac you're using didn't exist when older versions of an OS were released. So the drivers for your hardware don't exist on those older disks, making it impossible to correctly install the OS for your Mac.
It's not just major releases, either. I had a G5 that came with Panther, 10.3.5. Even though I had a retail copy of Panther, the G5 could not boot to the retail disk as it was 10.3.0. Again, the drivers weren't on the retail disk for my Mac since that model didn't exist at the time Panther was released.
So my options (like I have any options!) are to buy a new macbook pro for megabucks, AND buy all new software for megabucks?
No, only those apps that are too old for the OS you're using. Photoshop 7 was the first OS X version. And at that, it was really still an OS 9 app with just enough extra support files that allowed it to run in earlier releases of OS X. I'm still using quite a few older apps that run just as well now as they did in Panther. Even those that are PowerPC only apps since they run fine through Rosetta emulation.
I believe PS 7 still qualifies for the upgrade price to PS CS3. That isn't bad at $160.
