How do I reconnect to an external drive with all my itunes

Today I migrated to an Imac and have successfully updated iphoto but itunes isn't working.
My G4 has a faulty logic board so I upgraded before the inevitable.
I have always kept my music on an external drive (500GB with 375GB available space)
I have followed all the postings on this forum and have
• changed the location in Preferences/advanced to the correct folder on the external drive
• copied and pasted the contents of the Itunes folder on the internal HD (not the folder just the contents)
iTunes Library Extras.itdb (12KB)
iTunes library Genius.itdb (28KB)
iTunes Music (which is empty)
iTunes Music Library.xml (12KB)
Previous iTunes Library (iTunes Library 2008-09-26 36KB)
• restarted itunes holding down the option & shift so that I get prompted to select a library
• choose "Previous itunes library" from the external drive
• deleted the contents only from the original music/itunes folder
• had a quick restart and nothing !
Can someone please guide me through it. Just a reminder that there is no music on the internal drive. All 23GB is on the external drive.

Are you using iTunes 8? After my update to iTunes 8, my Western Digital 500 GB My Book which stores my music library, is recognized in iTunes, but if I don't play any music or videos within a few minutes, and try to play shortly thereafter, it is nothing but a spinning beach ball. I must shut down the drive and and remount it. It does drive scan and then mounts allowing me to play music again.
I believe iTunes 8 has issues with external drives (FireWire only?) in some cases and is causing issues with the library readability and drive powering.
Have you tried a completely different drive with the same data? Not the easiest option, but It sounds as if you've followed all the right steps so far.

  • How do I  share music on external drive with 2 laptops

We have 2 laptops in our household, my macbook and my partners iBook. Is there a way of keeping all of our music in one folder on the external drive and have it accessible to both computers, each with their own itunes library? Or does each computer need to have it's own iTunes music folder? As we share some but not all of the same taste in music it seems a waste of space to duplicate music files on the same drive.

The sync options relate to the iPod connected, not the library itself, so you can use different iPods with different sync options with the same library.
The problem with sharing your library over the network is that the computer which "owns" the library on the external drive always has to be near (and powered on) when the other computer wants to access it.
But you can have one library (.XML) file per computer, and still store your music on the external drive: just go to iTunes menu > Preferences > Advanced > General and uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library". Now you still have to import the files on the external drive once per computer, but they will not be duplicated.

  • How can I interchange a Toshiba external drive with my Mac and Windows? It only works read only with the Mac.

I bought a Toshiba external drive IT and I can copy files to it from my Macbook Pro 5,3. I would like to know how canI interchange files with Windows and the Mac.

If the disk is read only, it is formatted for Windows and the Mac can't write to it
    Reformat to FAT32
This will of course wipe all data so move it first

  • How can i access my lacie external drive with os mountain lion

I have just upgradet my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion, and now i can't restore my backed up files from my Lacie external drive.
When i try to connect to it through time machine or migration assistant i get the message:
"the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported"
I have tried to enable all UAMs but i still can't connect.
I have browsed after other similar situations, but i can't seem to find any though i'm hardly the only one with this problem.

If the backup was made using time machine, you should be able to access any files you need or want manually using the finder. It may not be pretty, but it should work. I don't know why the migration assistant would be unable to access it though.
If you can't access the contents of the backup with the finder, then I would say your problem is a bit more serious.

  • What is the best way to back up an external drive with all my referenced files?

I just backed everything up using carbon copy cloner but when Iaunch aperture none of the links work even when I try to relink.
    this is really frustrating

Tell us what happened, exactly, when you went through the Reconnect dialogue in Aperture when referenced images were not found.  I have done it successfully numerous times.

  • Advice on connecting external drive with all of my media

My old computer stopped working and I took out the drive that contained all of my photos and videos that I use with LR and I am now using the drive as a bare bones drive connected to a docking station to another Mac.
The Lightroom folder was on another drive of the broken computer, so I copied that entire folder to the desktop of the new Mac. Everything seemed to open on its own when I opened Lightroom on the new Mac.
I want to add LOTS of new photos to LR, and I just want to check to make sure that this workflow will not cause any problems before I begin.
    1. I plan to just copy new photos to the bare bones drive in the docking station and add keywords to them in LR, and when I'm done, eject the drive and place it into a protective case.
    2. The Lightroom folder containing the catalog is currently on my desktop, it was previously stored on the other Mac inside the Pictures folder. I might keep it on the desktop for now, though I might move it somewhere else later. Are there any issues with moving it around like this?
    Thanks.

I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

Does your Mac have ThunderBolt ports?
There are ThunderBolt to FireWire adapters.
As far as I know there are no FireWire to USB 3 adapters.

  • How to store photo's on external drive and still use Time Machine and secondary back up plan

So, My Macbook Pro is now going on 4 years old and I've accumulated around 15,000 photos in iPhoto now.  I would like to move everything (or at least everything older than 12 months) onto a portable external drive, but i'm not sure the best way to do this and still keep a good back up plan.  My current process is the following -- I have external HD same size as my current internal drive on the MBP, which is formatted that i use Time Machine.  I also have a paid subscription to Crash Plan online cloud back up that is connected to my laptop drive (CrashPlan is constant and easy, so I just USB plug in MBP to EHD a few times a month and that's it).  If I were to move most of my picture/video's/important docs to an external drive, how would I back that up with Time Machine, and if I did, how would I back up my laptop drive with Time Machine also, and what drive would I assign my Crash Plan online account too?  Cant seem to wrap my brain around the easiest and best method.  (In short, I want most pics/video's stored off the laptop so that my HD is not consumed; but still easy to access if needed, and easy to back up)  Also driving this need for a solution is the fact i would like my next lap top to be an Macbook Air, which I know I can't keep my current set up would not work.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

if your internal drive has 250 GB and the external drive with the iPhoto library as well, your TimeMachine should have at least 1 TB.
I have read over some of CrashPlans support docs and it sounds like it will be able to back up and restore the iPhoto library, and as long as you restore the entire library and not single photos, it will save and restore all metadata as well.
I studied their documents to.  They are saying they can backup any filetype. And they are saying the iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries will be backed up automatically, when they are in in the Pictures folder, because the Home folder will be backed up.
On their screenshot you can see, that the libraries are backed up as a nested set of folders, and not as a package. That let's me doubt that the dependencies within the package will be treated correctly. To restore from the backup they recommend to restore the set of nested folders.  What I could not find anywhere in the documentation is any information on the filesystem they are storing the backup on. If it is not Apple's MacOS Extended (Journaled, not case sensitive) the restored library may be corrupted, because the internal links in the databases may not work. Try to find out something about the filesystem on the backup servers, before you entrust your iPhoto library to that servers.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.
