How do I recover files from a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive?

I have been backing up my computer with a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive. My hard drive failed and I had to buy a new computer. I would like to save my data to the new computer, but I don't want to do a complete system backup because it would overwrite my new computer's operating system (or would it?). I would like to save individual files to my new computer. Is it possible to do this?

No way. Doing that would never overwrite you OS at anyhow. You can able to restore files from the backup copy, though you will not be able to restore file one by one.
Alternate way
Try professional recovery software if the above methods didn't help you. Download it from here,

  • How to play flac files from a Maxtor external hard drive

Trying to use an old mac mini PPC to play music from a Maxtor external hard drive. Files are flac format. Would like to move files to iTunes library individually or by album or ideally only when I want to play them. Am not that accustomed to using a Mac, just finding my way around...flac file conversion
is possible for this old mac or do I need to download some freeware?

If you want to convert your FLAC files (I would recommend to Apple Lossless format) then have a look at the free XLD software.
    See http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html
Apple Lossless format is the same exact quality as FLAC, roughly the same file size but works natively in iTunes and on Apple's iPod/iPhone/iPad devices. It can also be played in most Windows applications including Windows Media Player if you add the right plugins or codecs. Apple Lossless is a free open-source format now, just like FLAC.

  • How do I recover files from my HP Pocket Media Drive?

My HP Pavilion g6 computer's hard drive crashed a couple weeks ago and as it was crashing, a pop-up showed up to tell me to back up all of my data. I hooked up my pocket media drive and waited until I read a message saying "files successfully backed up", or something similar to that. I then sent my computer to an HP technical support center for them to fix it up. When I got my computer back, I hooked up my pocket media drive and tried to restore my files. I have been unsuccessful with this and need help. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • How can I transfer files from my macbook pro hard drive to another target drive

The hard drive on my Macbook is corrupted and so I am trying back up files from the hard drive on my Macbook to a target disc so that I can wipe the hard drive on my Macbook and re-install the system software. I am only able to access the Macbook via disc utilities using the start up system DVD. Is there a way of accessing the files while I'm in disc utilities so that I can transfer to the target disc?

Some MacBooks have Firewire, while others do not.  See this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2502
If both of yours have Firewire, you can use the Target Disk mode described at the end of the tip.  Otherwise, you'll need to pull the hard drive out of the machine that it is in, and put it in a 2.5" hard drive case that supports the ports that are on the other machine.
Note, if you can't read the data on the other machine, using a data recovery tool to a hard drive at least as large with no data on it is recommended.  This tip explains how to do data recovery:

  • How can I transfer files from an old PC hard drive to my Mac?

I have an old PC from which I removed the hard drive.  It is an old WD 40 circa 2001.  I would like to transfer all my old documents and pictures to my IMAC.  I obtained a USB Universal drive adapter from OWC, but I can't get my IMAC to recognize the drive.  Can anyone help me.

    angelpup wrote:
It just doesn't recognize the drive.  Will the first solution you provided work?  The drive has been physically removed from the PC.
It should work with your Mac.  If you have access to a PC, plug it in and see if it can be read, and if so just copy the files to a flash drive to transfer to your Mac (Better than spending your day trying to get your Mac to read it for a 1 time transfer of files)
The problem could very well be that the adaptor you got from OWC is defective.

  • How can I delete files from iTunes AND my hard drive? It used to be very obvious in iTunes but I no longer see that option.

I used to easily be able to delete songs from my hard drive and library through iTunes but I no longer see that option. Is there a way to do that or a workaround of some kind?

Are these songs in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs > Advanced?
Only songs in this location will be deleted from the HD when delting from iTunes.
    Also, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Click Reset Warnings.
If you are deleting from a playlist, it will only delete from that playlist.
Hold Shift and press Delete to remove from the playlist and from the library.

  • How can I recover files from an iPod Touch (4th gen) prior to a required restore?

How can I recover files from an iPod Touch (4th gen) prior to a required restore?
The iPod Touch was working perfectly fine.  iTunes suggest that I update the iPod Touch to the latest operating software, and I proceeded to do so.  Then a message popped up stating that the iPod Touch needs to be fully restored - and that all data will be lost.  The iPod Touch now displays the 'plug into iTunes' screen, and is stuck there.  There are irreplaceable family momentos on the iPod Touch.  How can I recover files from an iPod Touch prior to a required restore?  HELP...

Your only hope is to contact a data recovery company. When it shows the connect to iTunes screen the iPod is essentially deleted.
You can restore from an existing backup

How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

  • How to add files from iPod to new hard drive after krasch?

My hard drive recently crasched. I use my iPod as back up. But now, I cannot find out how to copy the files back to the new hard drive on the computor. The iTune program only advices me to delite all information on the iPod to substitute it with the much lesser library on the computer. Obviously it must be possible to copy in both directions. But how do I do it?

Thank you for your advise. That's one thing I learned. Not to assume that people know about backing up. I would have recommended it a long time ago. That's one thing that Apple or other computer stores should offer, external backup package or combo to make people aware of it's importance. Just a thought!
Anyway, I do have a little background in troubleshooting. I thought it's a Mac security issue. I would want to try other options before deciding in opening the computer and taking out thehard drive as it is not as convenient as opening a PC.
Apple does make external hard drives available at the Apple Store, however it is an end users responsibility to backup their system. Apple does offer classes to new users and their 1:1 service too, whether the subject of backing up is mentioned in these I do not know. The subject of backing up as a class "subject" may be something you may want to mention to Apple a www.apple.com/feedback.
Many users go through the same pain as your friend, myself included! However once you go through the pain, it is a lesson seldom forgotten.
Many experiences users on these forums have redundant methods of backing up. When it comes to backing up redundancy is wise, why because a backup can (and often do) fail too. For example, in addition to using Time Machine, I also have another EHD that I use to create a bootable clone of my computer. That way if both my internal drive and TM back fails the worst that will happen is I have a system I can boot from that is a day or so old and continue running until I get all my systems fixed.

I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive

SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive
How does a person enable Sales reps to SYNC literature files from a cloud library down to their computer,.... but then not be able to have them accidentally delete the files by accident if they delete a file from their computer and then have it
    sync upwards again.
    Permission Level
"Read" allows to download individual files but not SYNC down and there are too many files for them to go and download each file every-time.
"View Only" is only visible on the browser and not useful when reps are in remote parts of the world.
"Contribute" allows the sales reps to SYNC but if they delete a file from their computer, then it deletes it for all which is to much.
There must surely be a way to allow a one way (cloud-to-hard-drive) SYNC to avoid folks from deleting files.
Does anybody know how to d this or if not, how do I have Microsoft consider such a perceived weakness compare to dropbox

You can achieve the functionality which you describe using the OneDrive (SkyDrive Pro) in Sharepoint 2013. You can setup read only folders to sync to achieve "one way" traffic. You will need Office 2013 locally to avail the full features of
the coauthoring environment if you are looking into that as well.

Some benefits of using OneDrive include the following:
Users can take their documents offline with them and have them synchronize when they are online again.
Users' documents can be synchronized across all client devices and servers where the files are stored and synchronized.
Multiple users (online or offline) can work on documents at the same time, and the OneDrive for Business Windows Sync client will synchronize the changes between the users. If there are conflicts, users are prompted to resolve the conflicts.
Users can share and collaborate on documents.
Users can work from many locations, either online or offline, and work from many devices.
