How do I recover files from an internal hard drive that is no longer recognized?

Hi there,
Any help on this problem is greatly appreciated!  I have a MacBook Pro (late 2009) running Snow Leopard.  Over the last few years, after having brought the computer in to get checked, it seems that the RAM cards have gotten loose (or the bottom cover of the computer gets loose) and occasionally a grey curtain will come down from the top of the screen and everything stops working.  Restarting the computer is often fine but sometimes it can't be restarted and I have to take the cover off, reset the RAM cards in their slots, and retighten the cover.  The computer usually works fine after that, but verifying the disk using Disk Utility will sometimes indicate there is an error and the disk needs to be repaired.  Repairing it in Disk Utility is usually fine.
Last year this happened but the disk could not be repaired. The operating system could still be run, and after making a backup of all my files I reinstalled the operating system from the installation DVD, which didn't delete any of my files on the hard drive anyway.
A few days ago the same grey curtain issue happened, however upon resetting the RAM and back cover and restarting the computer, the apple logo appeared which was quickly replaced by a prohibitory sign, which stayed on the screen indefinitely.  After putting in the installation DVD and trying to reinstall the operating system, when the option comes up to choose which disk to install OS X on, the internal hard drive does not appear as an option.  Going to Disk Utility from the DVD, the internal hard drive appears on the left but the text is greyed out.  Attempting to repair the disk gives the following error message:
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Invalid key length
Invalid record count
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume    could not be verified completely.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
While I know I could completely erase and reformat the disk, I really don't want to lose any of my files (ideally).  If I erase the disk but select "Don't Erase Data" from the "Security Options..." in the "Erase" tab in Disk Utility, will this keep all my files in tact and will I be able to access them later?  Are there third party applications that can recover my files so I can make a back up before I delete and reformat the hard drive?  I am currently running the computer through an external hard drive connected by USB, but the internal hard drive still doesn't show up in Finder (only in Disk Utility as greyed out text).
Can I recover my files?
Thanks so much!

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't erase the drive or write anything else to it until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

Stop using the drive immediately, un plug it.
Buy a copy of ProSoft DataRescue 4 and use it to search for deleted files.

I would be very grateful to hear that I can recover my files(I have tens of thousands of photos, and about 20Gb of music) without paying much(Free would be better).
    Thanks

  • Can I recover data from an internal hard drive that I removed from my MB Pro?

A few months back my HD failed on my MB pro.  I have since then replaced this HD with a SSHD.  My question is can I recover this data from the old hard drive?  I remember when I was at the Genius Bar one of the techs told me there was a company I could send the HD to and they could recover the data.  Does anyone know of such a company?
    Thanks

here is one of many companies.  But it is expensive and not guaranteed.  http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/

  • How do you transfer files from an internal hard drive in a broken Mac?

My iMac G5 broke a while back, the power comes on but nothing comes on my screen and the fan goes into overtime. I don't mind not fixing it but I would like to take the files from my hard drive. How would I go about this?
I've tried using a firewire cable but to no avail.

all i can think of is to remove the HD from the Mac, put it in an external enclosure, and use data recovery software such as Data Rescue or FileSalvage to retrieve the data.
    good luck !

  • How to import recovered files from an external hard drive

My hard drive crashed. I got a new one and of course lost my itunes.  I had the recovered data put on an external hard drive.  How do I re import my data back into Itunes?

    Hello David,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
If you have the entire iTunes library folder on that recovered drive, you can copy it to your new computer and use this article to choose that iTunes library that you just copied to the new computer.
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

Otherwise, you would need to use the Add File to Library function.

  • How do I recover files from a crashed hard drive?

When I turned on my laptop, a grey screen with a folder with a question mark was blinking on the screen.  My tech guys at my work said that it can't locate the hard drive.  They are looking at it for me right now (they are apple certified) but my main concern is recovering pictures that are on there.  I am a local photographer and I have some pictures I had JUST downloaded and hadn't had time to move over to my other storage before this happened.  Will I be able to recover those at all?!?!  I'm having a slight meltdown!!

You are probably going to have to send the disk drive out to data recovery service. This is going to be expensive like $$$$

Hi, likely the easiest is to just poll the drive & get something like this...
    Get MacScan...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/macscan.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/
But if you have a good external drive already, just clone it.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

    Or SuperDuper...

  • How do I copy files from a seperate hard drive to Bridge

How do I copy files from a seperate hard drive and paste them to Bridge

Bridge is just a file Browser, nothing more and nothing less.  It doesn't create folders of its own and it doesn't keep image files in the application itself.
You don't "paste" anything "into" Bridge.  You just navigate Bridge to the other drive where the images are, point it toward said files, and Bridge will show them to you.
Once you find your files, you can use Bridge to move them or copy them to wherever you want.  They will never be "inside" Bridge.  As soon as you disconnect the other hard drive, Bridge will have no record of them unless you copy them over to a drive that is always attached to your computer, such as your boot drive or another internal drive.
Recapping;  Your images are never in Bridge.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

Is it dead or corrupt? There are recovery programs out there, however if your HD is head, paying pros to do data recovery is VERY costly.       Some have removed the platters and installed them in likewise drives that dont have head crashes, but torque tolerances are tight, and doing it right is a bit advanced and tricky for most. Ive done HD disk swaps 4 times and had success 3 of the 4 times. It requires cannibalizing another working HD.   In the future remember the golden rule, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Its likely you could find a local computer repair station that can do it for you cheaply.  HD dont really "die", they have fried SATA bus, or crashed HEADS........the platters DO demagnatize over long time due to heat and degauss of the data (poor storage, etc).........but in specific, a HARD DRIVE DOESNT DIE ,.........only the flying head mechanisms that read and write the data, and SATA / bus that feeds the data DIES,.......but the data (unless corrupt or magnetically corrupted) is THERE
