  • How do I recover my files after using time machine restore?

Hello guys! I have been using Time Machine to back up my Macintosh HD into an external disk in August this year. Considering the limited storage of my external disk, I have excluded all of my photos and musics to be backed up. Today I got some problems of my system and started using time machine to restore my computer to the state of August. After restoring, I found all of my photos and musics and other important files which have been excluded to be backed up by time machine are missing. What a disaster. Is there any way to recover all the missing files? Or is it possible to undo today's time machine recovery? Many thanks in advance!

many thanks for your reply. But for the current matter, do you have any other great ideas for me to take back all of my missing files. I will definitely buy a lager storage disk to back up all the files. But how could I solve the current issue? I have already tried the software you mentioned in the lien, it seems no help. Thank you anyway!

  • Unable to recover lost Secure Notes using Time Machine

I inadvertently reset my default keychain.  Upon discovering my error, I used Time Machine to restore an earlier login.keychain from user/library/keychains.  All passwords, keys and certificates appear to have been successfully restored.  However, all of the secure notes--of which there were dozens--remain missing.
From reading similar threads I thought that restoring the login.keychain file would restore secure notes, but this didn't happen.  Does anyone have a suggestion?
I'm on an intel iMac running Lion, 10.7.2.  Thanks in advance.

    Here's what worked for me:
Restore from Time Machine the folder ~user/library/keychains.  Note that your libary (and all its subfolders) are now invisible by default in Lion. There are a number of ways to reveal it, including those discussed here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/161156/2011/07/view_library_folder_in_lion.html
Look in the restored folder and you'll see a number of files that end with the extention ".keychain", for example....
    login.keychain
...and any other keychains you may have previously created yourself.  Most likely, your secure notes are in the old login.keychain file.  Run the program Keychain Access (which you can find in the folder Applications/Utilities) and add back your old .keychain files by pulling down File-->Add Keychain. Your restored login.keychain should load automatically, but if it doesn't try adding it manually as just described.
    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

    help pls

If you do not keep a backup, you have a major problem.  You can try looking in the Mail "Trash."  Other than that, you are out of luck.  You now see why keeping a current backup of your harddrive is immensely important.
    Hope this helps

The memory on my MAC is full. It holds 4GB of RAM of which 79GB are photos. I would like to back up my photos to an external drive but just do not know how. I do not wish to use time machine. How do I back up my photo library, then delete them from my MAC to free up that 79GB? Thank you.

    Hi
Just to clarify a couple of points in your post.
RAM (memory) is different from hard drive space. You have 4GB of RAM, but that has no bearing on the amount of drive space you have, of which we know that 79GB are photos.
If those photos are in iPhoto, you should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library, from the Pictures folder, to your external hard drive. You can just drag and drop. Do not have iPhoto open while you're doing this. Once it's done, you can double-click on the moved iPhoto Library file to associate it with iPhoto, so that the app remembers where the library is for next time.
One more thing. When you move a file to a different location, and then delete the original, you don't have a backup. You still only have one copy. So if that external drive dies, you will lose all your photos. Time Machine is a very good way to prevent this from happening. You should dedicate a different drive for Time Machine backups.

  • Recover OSX Mountain Lion using Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
Can anyone help me to recover OSX  Mountain Lion using TIme Machine backup as i accidently corrupted the recovery HD and the Macintosh Drive?
    Regards,
    Sanil

As Linc stated, you can boot from your Time Machine backup of OS X Mountain Lion.
Restart your machine and hold down the Option key. Select the Time Machine backup drive to boot from. When it boots into the TM drive you will get the same OS X Utilities screen like in the recovery HD. You can use Disk Utilities to erase your Macintosh HD then restore your Mac OS X from Time Machine.

  • I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

    Hello
I want to know how to put the settings on my computer not to shut off. I have gone to the Energy Saver icon and made the changes so that it never shuts off and after about 15 minutes it will still turn off.
I want this setting for when im backing up my comp using Time Machine and also when I listen to music. I dont want to have to be next to the computer and have to hit a button or move the mouse so that it wont turn off.
Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.
    p.s. -- i have a black macbook from 2007 if that matters.

As you can see I have the settings to NEVER and after 15-`6 minutes it goes to the sign in page anyway

It's not real clear what you want to do.
Do you mean you don't want to back up your personal data at all, just the operating system?  If so, why?  Usually it's the personal data -- documents, photos, videos, etc., that are most important to folks, so should be backed-up.
Or do you mean, you have some sensitive data that you don't want anyone to be able to recover if they get your backup disk?  If so, Time Machine can encrypt the backups, so anyone without a backup can't recover anything.
    Or something else?

  • How to recover deleted browser history using time machine on osx lion

I turned my time machine backup on. Deleted some of my browser history. And restored the entire App, Google chrome, hoping my history would reappear. However it didn't. Same with Safari.
What am I missing? Or rather, how to restore just the hisotry and not the rest of the application?

I'm surprised because I just opened History.plist in TextWrangler and all the history listings are in there. There may be some interaction with other parts of what Safari saves during a session, and the only other approach that comes to mind is more serious surgery. The History.plist you found is contained in a folder called "Safari" along with a bunch of other stuff. At the risk of losing anything else you've done in Safari since then (e.g., new bookmarks), try restoring the entire Safari folder from Time Machine, being sure that the TM point you've selected is before the deletion. You might want to copy the current Safari folder to the Desktop first, just in case. And, again, Safari must not be running during the attempt.
There is also a Safari directory in /Users/username/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari which has a history component in it but I'm not sure if you need that restored, too.

  • How do I restore individual files/folders from Time Machine to a PC?

My Mac of six years have crashed and been sent to the apple hospital for surgery, but I had time machine backing up all my files. Yah! Now with the help of 'macdrive' I can see the files on my windows computer, but when I tried to restore any individual files or folders to the pc, nothing.
I would click on the files from my external drive and a box comes up for 'where do you want to copy selected files?'. Right-clicking only provide the 'copy', 'copy to', and 'create a shortup' options. Whichever options I try, no copies/restored files is created.
How do I restore the files (not the entire system, just pictures and documents) to a windows computer?
    Help please

You need to be more specific what types of files are you trying to restore. It sounds like you just need to learn how to use TM which is pretty darn easy. Here is one good article and you can always use Apple's find out how video on TM.

  • How do I recover my Bookmarks from a Time Machine Back Up

I just upgraded from a 2 year old MacBook running Snow Leopard to a new MacBook Pro running Lion. Because of the problems Apple has between these 2 operating systems, I can not use the automated Migration Assistant to migrate over any of my old files, user info, or settings to the new machine. I'm having to manually pull over document files and applications from my Time Machine back up disk.
I can't seem to find my Bookmarks from the old computer in my back up files. On the Time Machine drive, I've looked in User, Application Support, Library, amongst many others. Not seeing it anywhere. They don't seem to be in Time Machine at all, or rather they're only there if I do the automated migration for all of my programs and settings. Which of course is not possible, because it leads to massive disk permission errors and a corrupted hard drive on the new machine. One thing I'm realizing i should have done was make a manual back up of my bookmarks in Firefox before I wiped my old machine. If I didn't do this, am I screwed?
If anyone has ideas I would love some help, I really really don't want to lose years of bookmarks.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't buy a Mac with OSX Lion unless you want to waste LOTS of time fixing Apple's mistakes. This whole process has been a disaster so far. There are all kinds of issues with the transition to Lion, I'm 40+ hrs in now. Apple now has their very own version of Vista.

The following has instructions: OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
The following is old but specific to iPhoto and may help: iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later)
