How do I recover missing photos in iPhoto 11?

HI!
I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 (from iPhoto 9, I believe). There are 12 photos missing from  the 'Photos' section of my library. There are dashed lines around the locations where the photos should be (it is a sequence of 12 pictures), so I assume the originals are in the iPhoto Library somewhere. How do I have the placed back where they should be?
     Thanks for your help.
Doug Chisholm

Give these two fixes a try  to see if they can recover those missing photos.  But be sure to have a backup of your current library in case the results are not to your liking:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

How do I recover lost photos in iPhoto? Instead of photos I have dotted borders or, in a few cases white boxes.

You could try rebuilding the database ...
Launch iPhoto while holding down the Command + Option keys.
The Photo Library First Aid window should open.
    Select:  Repair Database
    Click:  Repair
If that doesn't help, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch iPhoto.
If that doesn't help, copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch iPhoto.
If you do not currently have a wawy to backup your iPhoto library, you need to do that so that you can recover your photos in the event of a hard drive problem.

  • I lost my iPhoto library on external disk so how do I recover iPhone photos to iPhoto on MacBook?

I moved all of my photos to an external disk.  No other backup.  Big mistake. Now, how do I transfer photos on my iPhone (albums, events, faces) to my MacBook iPhoto library, which is now empty?

It sounds like you were running a  "referenced"  library? Were you?
If you didi and you moved the photos to the EHD you would get a "Can't find XXXXX" message when you try to view a photos.  Is that what you get?
Are those photos still on the EHD?  You'll  have to explain in more detail exactly what you did and how you did it before we can give you any suggestions on how to get back in business.

  • How do I recover lost photos from iPhoto?

Help!!! I had all my honeymoon pistures in iphoto.  My computer started to malfunction due to a ram issue.  Long story short I "backed up" all my stuff to a western digital 250gb hard drive and re installed lion.  They are not on my external Hard Drive nor laptop anymore.  Does anyone know how I can ge these back?  Ill take any suggestions.

Hello, thank you sooooo much for such quick replies.   Pretty much what originally happened was I was trying to make an imovie, i movie wouldnt load.  I call mac support and they deleted some sort of "plist" in imovie, that didnt do anything, so at that point, they said to re install lion.  I backed everything on to my external hard drive by doing just a drag and drop, I erased everything from the laptop hard drive (in disk utility) and re installed it.  Did not work, brought it back to apple, which we than replaced the RAM.  That fixed everything, and I now re installed everything.  When I went to bring my photos back on from my external drive.  They were not there.  Its weird because I created another user, and looked on the hard drive under the other new user account, and there is a different folder there.  Doesnt have any of my pics, but says hawaii, with data001, data002 and so on.  I am wondering if it is because I have different RAM when I saved them on the other HD ( dont think so though).  Do these recovery programs work?

  • HT4858 My iphone5 was stolen (second time) :( How can I recover my photos and videos on icloud? Last time they did not all come back

My iphone5 was stolen (second time) How can I recover my photos and videos on icloud? Last time they did not all come back. Specifically I need photos I took 1 day before it was stolen.

If they are in photo stream and your computer meets the minimum system requirements (OS X 10.7.2 or higher and iPhoto '11 9.4 or later or Aperture 3.4 or later; or Vista SP2 or later if you have a PC), set up iCloud on your computer and enable photo stream, as explained here: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/.  You'll get any photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
Camera roll photos are stored in your iCloud backup, and can only be recovered by restoring the entire backup to another iPhone or iPod Touch that is running the same or higher version of iOS as the phone you backed up.

  • How do I recover Missing Files

I have several groups of pictures that have gone missing since I first used Picasa to share some photos. I could care less about a lot of them but there were a couple of hundred of my trip to England I would really like to recover. The thumbnails show up in my Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 but when you click on them they say that they are missing. These photos are no longer in MY Pictures either and the only thing in those folders is a Picasa.ini .
I have also checked my recycle bin but there is nothing in there. Does anyone have any help as to how I may recover these photos?

It is a common misconception that Starter Edition 'stores', or copies, your files into it. But the program does not move or copy files at all, rather it scans your system's My Pictures directory, and generates miniature versions of your pictures (called thumbnails) so that you can browse a 'flat' list of thumbnails of your photos, overcoming the inconvenience of having to go into separate folders in Windows Explorer to have to find files. The thumbnails, as well as any tags, and Albums that you create in Starter Edition are all stored in the Photoshop Album catalog file, separate from your pictures, and your pictures remain where you originally copied them to your computer.
If you use Photoshop Album to subsequently download files from a digital camera or scanner, the default location where the program will create those files would be in the My Pictures>Digital Camera Photos folder. But if you do NOT use Photoshop Album Starter edition to download files from your camera, then you will find that folder empty.
The thumbnails in the Starter Edition catalog will exist, even if you decide to move or delete the original photos that were added to the program. This will cause files in the Photoshop Album catalog to become 'disconnected' from the original photos. To reconnect the files, you can use the File>Reconnect Missing files command to see if the program can locate the original files in a new location, and once again re-link the catalog thumbnails to the files they once referenced.
Since Photoshop Album has been discontinued, I recommend that folks find an alternative solution. One alternative that will preserve most of what you've created in Starter Edition is the Photoshop Elements 8 trial. Install that, and it will automatically convert the Photoshop Album catalog to a current format, and the program will not time out, as Starter Edition did. If you want to purchase more Editing power, you can also choose to purchase the full program, but it's not required.
If you are like many who have come to this forum wondering how you can get to your photos, now that the program has become locked or expired, don't worry; your photos have never been moved by Photoshop Album; they remain wherever you intially put them, on your hard drive. To get to them, you can navigate your file system using Windows Explorer. They are typically in your My Documents>My Pictures folder. Here is a handy How-To that you could refer to to find photos on your system, as well as some other tips for how you can use folders to keep your photos organized: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/filemgmt.mspx
    Hope those tips help!

  • How do I successfully remove photos from iPhoto?

Just bought a new MacBookPro.. very happy with it, everything except the iphoto application. When I insert my iphone, SD card it uploads my photos to iphoto.. which was great, till I discovered that there is NO obvious file location for my images, and iphoto isn't a folder..  I want a physical location for my photos. I want to be able to copy them, put them onto usb sticks, email them to family and friends.. they are MY photos after all
Every time I highlight images and try to copy them from iphoto, all I get is a filelocation marker / address. And I can't navigate to the location, because iphoto thinks it's a application, instead of a folder.. ? Very confusing.
Please tell me how I can recover my photos back from iphoto.. I'll only need to do it once, for maybe 30 or 40 pictures, and when I have them back, I can insert them into a new sub-folder within the pictures folder..

iPhoto is a program.  The iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder is basically the picture database that iPhoto accesses when it loads. When you click on that iPhoto Library it automatically launches iPhoto and loads all the pictures which are stored in there.  iPhoto really is as easy as drag and drop.  You can drag and drop photos in iPhoto and you can drag and drop them out of iPhoto to any location on the computer that pleases you.  iPhoto gives you many options for organizing, editing, and viewing your photots.  You should try playing around with all the features for a few days before you decide it doesn't do what you want it to do, because I believe it will do everything you need an more.  You just need to give it a chance and spend the 10-15 mins it takes to learn.

  • How do I recover lost photos?

How do I recover lost photos?
I downloaded photos from a memory stick onto my desktop and then tried to copy and paste them to iPhoto using COMMAND Z but now have lost them.
    Can I recover them now?

Well command-z means 'undo the last thing you did'... so I'd copy them from the memory stick again.
File -> Add to Library will get them into iPhoto.

  • How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.

  • How can I use the photos from iphoto to display in contacts?

Contacts has a space for a photo.  At one time I knew how to populate this space with photos from iPhoto. Currently my choices are to use an icon or take a pic with the camera.
How can I add the photos from iPhoto to the choices for populating the "Contacts" image space for individual cards?

I have alot of loose photos at home (old) and I would love to make a bunch of iphoto books and make the pages like whole page collages?  How do I get my photos into iphoto in order to do this?  Can I make a DVD at the drugstore and add them to iphoto?

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork.  Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary.  Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

  • How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom ?

How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom?  Thanks, I am a novice to Lightroom.

To access your Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop and Lightroom
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name] > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
    5. Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop or Lightroom from the file on the desktop.
    or
    7.  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.
Then access the files in the folder via Lightroom and Photoshop

  • How do I move 3741 photos in iPhoto on my iPad to iPhoto on my iMac?

How do I move 3741 photos in iPhoto on my iPad to iPhoto on my iMac?
My iMac lost all of the photos in the iPhoto library about 3 OSX updates ago (current system 10.9.1) but they recently appeared on my iPad. I have looked at all of the iphoto libraries on my iMac (3) and one contains 419 photos, one contains 3 photos and the main library has place holders with description information for 3741 photos but no photos. My iPad has all of the photos in iPhoto. How do I move them?

The answer is no. There is no originals (or masters folder) that I can find. Below are the following folders in iPhoto:
Events Folder: 71 place holders with decriptions including 6 recent photos
Photos Folders: 3741 Place Holders with descriptions
    Photo Stream: 1 photo
    Last 18 Months: 157 photos
    Last Import: 1 photo
    Cloud: 229 photos
1 Album: 3 placeholders with descriptions
    Slideshow: 1 placeholder with description
Many of the actual photos are recent and are duplicated in one of the abovefolders
