How do I recover space on my hard drive after installing Lion

My hard disk is full after installing Lion - before it had 80 GB free out of 320 GB.
Maybe it happened during the disabling of File Vault from Snow Leopard - I had to move a lot of files to get space enough for decrypting before using the encryption on Lion.
I have seen somewhere that the multi version way of saving files is what takes up the space and that it can be disabled.
How?

Are you sure you don't have duplicate copies of the things you moved?
Did the old sparsebundle containing the encrypted version of your home folder get deleted?
If you're using Time Machine, the space may be taken up by Local snapshots. See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

How do I free space on my hard drive in Mountain Lion?

How can I free up valuable space on my start up disk a/o hard drive space. I use FCPX a lot and I think there are many temporary files that I could easily get rid of within finder. I did this once with AppleCare's but as you know using Pro applications cost $100 per incident to get help using AppleCare. Please help me. Many thanks! My specs are as follows:
                3.5 GHz i7,
               16bg DDR3,
               AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 2GB of Video,
                OSX 10.8.4,
               2 TB hard drive with only 10.56 gb free.

Do a search for and downlaod and install OmniDisk Sweeper and OnyX.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded .dmg application installer files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive? If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

And backing up is so simple. Buy an external Firewire hard drive, (not expensive but get one that will boot a Mac, like LaCie) format it as GUI in Disc Utility, download Carbon Copy Cloner (free, donations accepted) (or SuperDuper although I have not used that) and schedule a bootable clone for 9 am every day. That way, if you have trouble you can clone back the backup to your internal and be back where you were at 9 am - all documents, applications, settings, pictures, movies etc. etc. Everything.
(I tried restoring from the Recovery drive an TimeMachine but many of my Mail emails did not return.)

How do I free up space on my internal hard disc?
I have only about 40 gig of information on my macbook however it says I don't have space while I'm working on photoshop. I have deleted a lot of files on my mac that are already saved in my external hard disc but when I check my memory it says I have only 1.3gig space available out of a 120gig memory. Lost 14 gig of space on internal hard drive after backing up photos to dvd's

good Morning, I'm running pse 6 and yesterday I did a full back up of my pics which is about 14 gig onto dvd's. This morning when I checked my free space available on my hard drive I was missing about 14 gig. I normally only have about 20 gig of free space left on my hard drive so I can't afford to lose 14 gig. Did backing up my pics on dvds also eat 14 gig of space on my hard drive? Help!

well probably you have told PSE to back up your entire hard disk , first check out the disk space usage and all by downloading any disk space usage analysis software..probably that will give you some help.

I want to format my hard drive and install Lion, using Snow Leopard at the moment.

I'm running Snow Leopard at the moment, and would like to install Lion.
But I want to wipe my hard drive clean before doing so, is there a way of formating the hard drive as you install the downloaded lion?

Not that I'm aware of. You can, however, grab the installer file and create a bootable USB thumb drive after downloading Lion and BEFORE you install it. Read here on how to do this.
After downloading, I would let it install. Then reboot with the USB thumb drive, use Disk Utilities to wipe the drive and then install Lion from the thumb drive. Do a backup first.

No Hard Drive after installing Leopard

Hi, i just installed leopard on my macbook and everything went very well until i turn it off and then turn it on again. It just popped a kernel panic screen, just after de main grey screen with the apple logo on it. So I try to reset the PRAM and doesn´t work, and I am stuck like in the middle of nowhere because apparently I have no hard drive to install leopard.
I try to verify the disk with disk utility but nothing happens, so I try to reinstall leopard and guess what, I have no hard drive to chose for installation.

hey, my hard drive died recently and i don't think it had anything to do with leopard either. you might want to check what kind of hard drive you have because a certain type of seagate hard drives that are installed in mac computers are defective and can crash at any time. i would check out this website and see if this might be your problem...

How to properly recover data from "broken" hard drive?

Hello Mac users,
I have a mid 2012 Mountain Lion MacBook Pro. My hard drive recently failed. As I have been working in Thailand, I decided to bring my laptop an Authorized Service Provider (Macintosh Center Co., Ltd.) in Bangkok. Their diagnostic was that my hard drive wasnt working anymore, and I had to change it. The problem is, since I had no backup, I asked them to recover my data and transfer to the new hard drive. But, this Apple Authorized Service Provider told me I had to go somewherelse because they have no software to recover my data! So, I went to the local Joe's repair computer store who retrieved my data from the problematic hard drive to the new one. Now, the problem is that all my "old" data is located in "orphan folders". In other words, counteless files were retrieved without folders and settings.
So, I would like to know if it is possible to recover my data with all the settings I had and then transfer it to my new hard drive. If it's possible, what software should I use to properly recover my data? If it's not possible, how should I deal with the "orphan folders" and my current settings?

First stop using your system, then get a copy of a program that will recover files like Data Rescue 3. If you have a time machine backup you may be able to restore them.

How do I clear space on my hard drive?

I am out of space on my 80GB Macbook Air and have already deleted trash in my apps and deleted over 7,000 photos, leaving only 2,500 on my hard drive yet deleting all those photos only gave me about 1-2 more GB. Adding all of my photo, music, and other files, I show that they take up about 20GB. All of the Apps account for under 5GB. I use CCleaner and do not see duplicates in my folders. Are there hidden files somewhere? I would really appreciate help as I can no longer update any software as I've got less than 3GB available.

There is other software out there for finding duplicates, once you do you should compare them by the Version or one of the Date properties to determine which to keep. I don't really use them but you can do a search on macupdate.com, a good source of freeware/shareware. Or maybe in the Mac App Store.

How to acquire more space on the Hard Drive

Hi everyone! I hope some one has the time to walk me thru steps to take to get more space on my HD. My comoputer is running very slow. I have been reading this site for info. I have a powerbook G4, 867 MHz, 1 GB SDRAM, only 40 gig HD. I run, iphoto, CS2, mail and safari. I only edit digital photos and do email and surfing.
I read from a post to delete the console log from finder. I clicked on the HD icon and went to library/logs/console and delete some things from it. I hope I didn't screw up.
I have deleted some languages and lots and lots of docs etc.
I am wondering if I should get rid of the dash board widgets? would that help? I never use them. if so how do I do that??
I feel stupid for having to ask this probably very basic question but I sure hope someone will help me.

General clean up is never a bad idea if you are careful about what you get rid of. However, if you are running out of space you should concentrate on getting rid of larger files. There are a number of ways to do this built-in to "OS X", two of them are using the Option-F Finder key and specifying file size, etc. and using the terminal (my preference being an old Unix-junkie).
There are also applications made for this. Easiest might be DiskSweeper (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/), you can use it for free - just have to delete the files yourself. Again, know what something is before you delete it.
Oh, and an external hard drive is always a good idea. I try to move most of my non-speed critical files off the main drive to maintain a healthy drive.

How did the used space on my hard drive increase so fast?

I just bought a new laptop at Best Buy and when I first got it I had 280gb of 285gb free space on my harddrive. After only a few days and no new progams or hardware installed, it now says that I only have 247gb of 285gb free space.
How did this happen? The only thing I can think of is a Windows Update that took place - but I doubt that would take up so much hard drive space?
