How do I recover the files on my desktop????

This morning, I start-up my Intel iMac running Mac OS X Tiger 10. Right away I notice that everything has reverted back to original defaults. My screen resolution, my dock preferences, and my two very important folders on my desktop containing working files to my Graphic Design business are gone. Like a dummy, I've been keeping them there for months and months and didn't back them up. Yes, I'm a BIG LOSER. I need them desperately. What should I do? I never deleted them. As a result of all of this, I even lost my photos in iPhoto. They just disappeared. Several apps in my dock were also gone replaced by question marks. I ran a disk first-aid. No problems. All the files on my harddrive are perfectly fine as well.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks

Everything (with the possible exception of the dock icons replaced by question marks) suggests that the home folder was renamed or corrupted. -
Did you rename your home folder?
Are you using File Vault?
Just to be sure, in a Finder window, check under HD/Users/ and make sure that there is not an extra user folder sitting there.

  • I downloaded an Adobe file from my email but cannot find it on my hard drive or in recycle bin - it's in downloads but am unable to open from downloads - how can I recover the file?

I downloaded an Adobe file from my email (service provider is MWeb) but now cannot find it on my hard drive and it's not in the recycle bin. It does, however, appear in Firefox downloads but I'm unable to open it from there. How can I recover the file?

    Thanks Rob.
I actually had no clue what the core problem was caused by. So it's Windows itself...that helps some.
I'll resubmit there. It might actually have saved time for it to simply have been moved to there instead of off-topic, though I suppose you have to follow protocol.

    You don't.

  • Truecrypt volume is empty, but the volume was never deleted. How do I recover the files (I know the password to the Truecrypt volume)?

Earlier when I went to access my truecrypt password encrypted volume, it showed that it was empty, and it contained 0 files. I never deleted the files and I am the only person with the password.
I suspect it may be because (1) I tried making a password protected folder on disk utility or (2) tried to setup time machine and didn't quite work.
My question is: is it possible to recover the files, if so, how can I recover the files. I've tried manually powering the computer off, restarting the computer, reinstalling truecrpt.
Please help, I have many treasured pictures on the volume.

    Hi,
DPM do not care about the Source File has changed or deleted, so SCDPM does not know if a File has been changed or is deleted.
So there is now known way to archive your Goal.
I can imaging that you can archive this Goal with a Powershelgl Script, but would be not this easy

  • My 6th generation 160gb ipod classic is displaying the red cross logo directing me to apple support. It's completely full and I'm wondering how I can recover the files form it. The iPod isn't recognized by my computer or by iTunes, help is appreciated!

Looking for help as to recover the files, thanks!

    Hello Lawrence,
    I do have AppleMobileDeviceService.exe running.
My USBs are plugging in straight into the laptop.  All 4 work.  Just today, I synced my iPod with multiple USB ports.  It works for the iPod, but the iPhone won't pop-up.  The iPhone does not appear in iTunes as a button anywhere.
I am unable to use another computer for this.  I can actually go into iTunes, add file to library, and add photos that way.  So, it's recognized by my computer.
This should have been seperated.  Basically, I don't have another computer accessible to me to back-up sync on iTunes with.
The last part means in iTunes, I can click "File > Add file to library" and the iPhone is shown as a camera icon.  I can click on it and have access to photos.  I can add those photos to the iTunes library.  That's about as far as the connectivity goes with the iPhone right now.

  • Files disappeared after running disk utility disk repair but still space still remains. how do i recover the files?

stupidly repaired my external hard disk without backing it up via mavericks's disk utility repair option.
After the repair, all my folders disappeared but at the same time I noticed that the disk space still remained the same. Is there anyway to get these files back? My thesis is on it.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • TS2570 my machintosh HD partition quit decrypting. How do I recover the files from the HD? I have replaced the 320 GB 5200RPM Hitach and I have the old one.

    Hello,
Was running osx Lion, newest update. Using Hitachi 320 GB 5200RPM HD. I5, 4 gb DDR3.  Mac Book Pro, 13 inch. Heres what happened:
Opened Disk Utility Via Launchpad> Utilities upon normal boot into home screen. Ran Disk verify on Mactintosh HD partition and was told the disk needed repair. Restart, cmmd-R upon restart. Run disk utility, verify disk on  Main Disk (whole drive), Needs repair: run permissions repair, run disk repair. Completes both processes on my Main disk (the whole 320 GB).... Machintosh HD now is greyed out, and will not unlock with my password to run Verify Disk. Attempt restart in safe mode, fail. Disk utility refuses to recognize drive, Machitosh HD turns to Disk 13 after failed attempt. Select Macintosh HD, Turn off encryption. Attempt password access to unlock and mount, fail will not accept password.
Trying from Terminal/ command line now via cmmd-r restart.... diskutil list.... sees Macintosh HD 3 tiers. will unlock Macintosh HD (bottom tier), but fails to mount.  Second tier, says decryption is happening, but no direction is given.
What I have been told by the computer guys I tool it to is that the HD froze while it was being decrypted, and they cannot extract the data. There is nothing mechanically wrong with the HD. I had to buy a new HD, and Keep the old one with hopes of extracting the Data....
What do I do here guys? How do I mount the drive externally to connect to my mac book pro?
What sort of file recovery program is going to get these files back?
    Why did this happen?
    Thank you guys in advance.

Instead of using Time Capsule or Time Machine to access the archived backup, use Migration Assistant to restore the backup from Time Capsule. Worked like a charm.

    Version 5.1.1 (1034)

How exactly did you shut down your laptop? Not a hard restart (holding down the power button), I hope... if that's the case, then it is extremely unlikely the file is still intact on your computer. If it is, it would be an image on your RAM, and it is time-and-resource-intensive to recover it if it is even there. RAM memory is disposable and always being written over. Sorry dude...
If it wasn't a hard restart, Keynote should have made a backup, unless you 'Force Close'd it.
It really all depends on how your mac was shut down.

  • How do I recover a file what was written in the 'notes' app that I have accidentally deleted?

how do I recover a file what was written in the 'notes' app that I have accidentally deleted?

If you have an iTunes backup or iCloud backup containing that note you can restore from that backup.
If you have no backups the note is gone.

  • Where are these unix executable files coming from and how do I recover the original text file?

where are these unix executable files coming from and how do I recover the original text file?

When you upgraded to Lion did you have AppleWorks installed on your mac?
Most of the AW documents can be opened by Pages 09 or Numbers 09 with most of the orginal format in tact. (I do not know if previouse verision will work) just open the AW file with both and see which one works best.
Text Edit will also open most of the AW files as well but will require a lot of work to restore them to their orginal format.
If you have AW Database documents then they are not supported.
These document show up as "exec icons", Kind: Unix Executagle File.
They also will show up as .cwk file if they are small files. I have a couple that were under 1mb that are shown as " Kind: AppleWorks Document" but will not open.
The only option to open AW database is to have AW installed on a mac with a pre-Lion OS to recover the file.

  • My 80 GB classic won't read the files I have synced up to it over the past 4 years, but it still shows that the files are still in there somewhere. How can I recover those files?

I manually manage my music on my iTunes library. Once I have it downloaded on my laptop, then click and drag it to my iPod, I delete the files from my computer to save memory space. So I basically don't have ANY back-ups to over half of the music that was on my iPod. The other week I did what I usually do to add music to my iPod, but once I disconnected it fro  my computer, my iPod said there was no music, movies, or anything on there. If you highlight over the Settings it reads that there are still 60 GB of space free out of 80 GB. How can I recover those files that are clearly still on my disk without erasing everything I installed into it?

In my Computer, click the  iPod icon ->Properties->Tools->Error Checking
    Click Check Now.
If it doesn't help, you have to use 3rd Party apps to recover these lost files, as the iPod filesystem got corrupted.

i was trying to divide the c drive ,but after reboot an error occured .notification is displayed in blue screen to recover the file .the recovery file is in d drive on hard disc . so tell me how to proceed?

It appears that you did not manage to create a partition correctly.
The first thing to try is the Windows repair disk, if you made one before you began your partitioning adventure. This will be an attemp to repair the BCD.  If you don't have access to a Windows repair disk, then it may be time  to use your recovery disk set or USB recovery  media.
I do hope that you made external copies of whatever you had saved on your notebook before playing around with partitioning utilities.

  • How can I recover Ai File. Which Ai file said "Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."

Can some one help me find solution to get my art work back?
The file is open and only see a blank paper.
But the size of the file is 120000 KB.
Could some one tell me. Thank you.

I've been badly stung by this error message in the past using Illustrator CC on a capable iMac with 16GB of RAM. Even when there is clearly enough memory, it presents this specific message, but I don't think that's the problem.
I was unable to recover the file (which had embedded bitmaps), multiple artboards and was about 120MB. I lost the work so had to return to an earlier version that I had incrementally saved manually. I had also turned off PDF compatibility  in the saving options so it ended up being a useless string of XML that I couldn't reimport anywhere.
All I can advise is to be cautious when working with larger Illustrator files in the future. I have yet to find a solution to this problem (and I looked hard for a long time).
