How do I redeem a gift card has not been properly activated?
I recieved a 100 dollar app store gift card when I bought my mac for college. when I tried to redeem the card it said that it hadnt been "properly activated". I typed it in at least three times, double checking the letters, then I used the camera to get the code and the same message kept coming up. I'm not sure how to "properly activate" my card.
Typically if the card was not activated properly you would want to check with the merchant. Since in this case you received it from Apple, you would want to contact Apple Support. http://www.apple.com/support/contact

They should either correctly activate the card or give you a new one. If they refuse to help, as some retailers do, or you don't know or can't get to the retailer, go here:

and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store. They will ask for a scan of the front and back sides of the card as well as a scan of the receipt
