How do I reduce size of PDF?

The pdf for my community newsmagazne has 16 pages.
When I send it to the company which prints it, I get the message - PDF is 40.7 MB - exceeds 20.0 MG used by this server.
Print size is 100%.
I send PDF as Best - Better is not good enough.
What can I do?
-Heather

Are there a lot of images in the document? If so, are they high-resolution, and used at a smaller size than the original? If so, one way to reduce the file size is to edit the images in a third-party application (such as Photoshop, or one of the many cheaper alternatives), so that the image is re-sized to the dimensions that are used in the document.
OS X used to have a built-in PDF reduction function in its Quartz filters. This feature was removed in 10.5, but it can be restored by using this software.
PDF Shrink is a $35 application that will automatically reduce the file size of PDFs (along with many other features). Adobe Acrobat Pro also has a built-in method for reducing file size of PDFs, but that is also an expensive tool that you may not have.
Do be aware that for the most part file-size reduction in PDFs works by reducing the resolution of images. If the original images are the same dimensions as that used in the final document, then any file down-sizing will involve a compromise in image quality.
As a workaround, you could also simply burn the full file onto a CD and send that, or use an online upload service like YouSendIt.

  • Reducing size of pdfs

Please can someone help? I have a new Macbook Pro, I used to be able to reduce size of pdfs on my last Mac, but how do I do it on my new one?
    Thanks

AFAIK, you have to use a third-party application, such as Adobe Acrobat, to reduce the sizes of PDF files.
I don't know that Preview can save a reduced file size - Acrobat can. If you want to give it a try, you can download one of the Adobe CS6 packages that include AcroPro.

  • How can I reduce size of a PDF file?

My PDF file is 20MB.  How can I reduce its size?

I used the"File > Save as Other > Reduced Size PDF" method and reduced a 4 MB pdf down to about 2.7 MB.
I then just printed the same file out to the Print PDF (not sure of the exact name) print driver.  When you install Adobe Acrobat, it adds a virtual printer to your list of available printers.  When you print to it, you don't get an actual print out, you just get a new PDF file.  This method reduced the same 4 MB pdf down to about 1.5 MB.
I find it weird that their Reduced Size PDF method gave inferior results.  Why don't they just have that function do whatever printing to the virtual printer does?

  • Error message when uploading book for printing. All images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large to upload? What size is required and how do I reduce size in Aperture?

I receive an error message when I upload my book for printing. Not sure what the problem is. All my images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large as it takes about 15minutes to upload to Apple. How do I reduce the size of the image in Aperture?

    Hi Leonie,
    Thanks for your reply.
Error message below. The preview is fine . I can discount the first 2messages as its a new computer so plenty of disk space and upload doesn't seem to be interrupted. I have uploaded to iphoto before. have tried to upload 3times with the same error message. I had to photo my slides with a Kaiser Baas photo maker , which apparently doesn't scan but takes photos in megapixels of the slides. I am wondering now if the format is incompatible though they are jpg files or the colour type wrong. The image files are  around 1-3 mb each and  72 ppi. I think  I will now scan them properly with a scanner to 300dpi anyway to improve quality.
Apple  talks about image files not being too big for uploading but gives no sizing of what too big is?
    Error message
    1. Upload Error. Loss of connection or file corruption during order upload may cause an incomplete order. Resubmitting your order usually resolves this issue.
    2. Low Disk Space. If your computer is running on low disk space, your files may be assembled incorrectly. Create more space by deleting unused files.
    3. Unreadable PDF file or image files. Files are sometimes assembled incorrectly due to CMYK or Grayscale color space. Use the RGB color space for best results.

  • Reducing size of pdf in OSX Lion

    Ladies and Gents,
Can you please let me know how I can reduce the size of pdf docs in OSX Lion. I use to be able to save as pdf, open it again and then "save as" with reduce option. In lion it only shows "Save version" instead of "save as". Thanks in advance and regards, Theo.

Hey, don't lose hope... I found this thread by Jerome Colas, about reducing PDF file size
    Try these steps:
    1. Download the quartz filters made by Jerome Colas LINK
    2. Move the FILTERS folder on your Library folder ---> /YOUR HARD DRIVE/Library/
    3. Open Automator, create Application (Not Workflow!!!)
    4. Search and drag "Open Finder items" to the right
    5. Search and drag "Apply Quartz Filter to PDF Documents"
              - when prompted "This action will change the PDF files passed into it.  Would you like to add a Copy Finder Items action so that the copies are changed and your originals are preserved?" Click Don't Add
    6. From the Filter drop down, select Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION
    7. Save it to your Desktop.
    8. To resize PDF, just drag the PDF file over the Automator Application you saved on your Desktop.
Your PDF file size is now reduced, without compromising the quality!
Thanks to Jerome Colas for the wonderful quartz filter!

  • Reducing size of PDF not working

Does anyone know why when trying to reduce a PDF by selecting Save As then choosing Reduced Size PDF wouldn't work on certain documents.  I did several PDFs and it worked fine.
I have a bunch more that are over 1 MB and are too big to be emailing so I need to make them smaller.  Some appeared to work but the size didn't change others I get a box that pops up with a Conversion Warning... An error was encountered while saving the document.
    Thanks

Try File menu >Save As... > Otimized PDF
When Optimizer open click Fonts Tab.
See how many copies of each font style (Bold. Italic, Bold Itallic, etc) yu have.
Remove all copies except one (example if you have 5-6 copies of Helvetica Italic which is frequently Possible) remove all copies except one.
I seen cases in PDF I have created where had as many as 6-7 copies of the same font version in the same PDF and maybe multiple font versions  often reducing the size by as much as 75%. (Not usually But havehad  it happen.)
Also click on the Tab for pictures unless you plan on printing a business report, 200dpi/ppi is the most you should use.
Save as a slightly different version. Open new version and check the size.

  • How can I reduce a fotobook pdf size for online printing

    Hello aperture,
I have been creating a large customer book (33 x 28 cm) with aperture.
I'm working with RAW datas and the fotobook has got around 150 pages.
My online printing office accepts only PDF X3 2002 datas and I can get this with adobe acrobat X Pro.
I print the book in aperture an save it as an Adobe PDF and than, I can save the datas as a PDF X3:2002. It works perfectly.
My problem is that the online printing office accepts only 2 GB and my pdf, which I've printed with aperture, has got around 7 GB.
What can I do in aperture to reduce the pdf size and get a smaller one?
My aperture settings for Export is: 300 dpi.
    Thanks for you help,
    Best
    Andrea

Actually in LR4 and Camera Raw 7 in Photoshop CS, you CAN create a downsampled DNG by using the Lossy Compression method of converting to DNG. In the LR 4 Export, select DNG then you have the ability to specify long dimensions or the size in Megapixels. Note, a Lossy DNG isn't un-demosiaced, it's been demosiaced but is still stored in Linear Gamma, so it's like a partially baked file, not a true unbaked raw file.
Note, in Camera Raw 7 when you set up your save dlog, it's a bit different. You select Lossy DNG and then have a dropdown for size presets...
Couple of things about the Lossy DNG, you SHOULD name it to distinguish between the downsampled DNG and your original DNG...you don't want to get into the situation where you overwrite your original. Also note that some things won't work totally as expected. For example, sharpening and noise reduction will be working but on a downsampled file. While the numbers will correlate, the actual effects will be a bit different because it's a downsampled file and more prone to potentially over sharpening. It all works, and the controls will work fine if you work at 100% zoom, but don't expect the high resolution your original file had.

  • Image Mask Error Message when Reducing Size of PDF

With my Mac, I embed jpg images in Microsoft Word documents, save them as pdf's, and reduce them. Size reduction often fails, with the error message "The PDF document contained image masks that were not downsampled".  Jpegs don't have masks, so I have no idea how to fix this problem, and an extensive google search was of no assistance.

Use PNG images instead use an application such as Graphics Converter, Fireworks to convert to .png from .jpg.
Will have much better images that do not degrade each time they are opened and most often they end up being same size than jpeg's
Jpeg unless you save as a special type is a Lossy format and each time is open (and decompressed) then closed (and then compressed) losses detail
Just open and magnify a jpeg after its been open 5-20 times you notice an out of focus halo looking similar looking to water spilled on paper wil pen ink on it. And it get progressively worse. PNG on the other hand is not lossy and if the original is saved as png never degrade even when reduced in size or or expand within reason in size.  I've being dealing with photos screenshots, images and other for years. Despite what other may say on this list may say if you want an image with little trouble for years of service save as png.

  • Reduce size of pdf

I recently created a document using Pages.  The document has three pages all using one of the available templates.  The current file size is 7.6 MB.  I converted it to PDF using the print to PDF feature.  This file is now 7.3 MB.  Any good ideas on how to manage down the file size without compromising the content?  Ultimate goal is to send this out via e-mail.

Barry's suggestion is the proper way to begin. If you find that is still not enough reduction and my suggestion is too much reduction,  you can edit the ColorSync filter. Under Applications > Utilities, open the ColorSync Untility.app, then select Filters from the top bar. Click the triangle to the right of “Reduce File Size” and then click Duplicate Filter. Now go to Reduce File Size Copy and click the triangle on the left side. Now click the triangle for Image Compression and adjust the Quality slider. You may have to try various settings to get the final file size you want.

  • Reducing size of .pdf image prior to displaying by Acrobat Reader

I scanned a newspaper article to a .pdf file and when Iit was displayed by Acrobat Reader the image was at 290%.  I would prefer a 100% readable image.  Is there an option to reduce the image size to say 100 or 75% prior to displaying it in Acrobat?  Could this be a function best achieved during the scanning process?  If so, how?   I am new at this and would appreciate any advise available.

Try playing with the default layout and zoom settings.
Edit > Preferences > select the category Page Display
In the Default Layout and Zoom pane, you can use the drop-down menus for
Page Layout and Zoom to make selections.
    Be well...

  • Why can't I reduce size of PDF created from multiple JPEGs?

    Hi,
Using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0, I combined a bunch of JPEGs and turned them into a PDF. Because the resulting PDF was very large, I tried various Adobe tools to create a smaller version. However, nothing worked.
Am I missing something? Or is it simply impossible to shrink the size of a PDF when it's created from JPEGs?
    Many thanks for your help.

Unless you use size reduction on the images, you are not going to do much better than the JPegs themselves, that is unless the JPegs used no compression at all. There are limits to compression and you have probably reached it.
Using Reduce File Size, you can usually reduce the size, but you will generally be reducing the resolution as well. If that is desired, you might find reducing the size of the graphics in a dedicated graphics package might be a better choice, followed by creating the PDF.

  • How can I reduce size of photo but leave it in my iPhoto Library?

I have a bunch of photos that are work related that I don't need at full resolution but don't want to delete out of my library so I can search for them by how I've tagged them.
Is there any way to reduce the size of the original photo within iPhoto and leave it in the library?

No. iPhoto stores the original untouched and then makes copies of them. If you want a smaller original then you have to take it out of the library, edit it to be smaller, then put it back into the library.
