  • Why does my Uverse go down in the heat of the afternoon?

Every morning my Uverse TV and internet work fine, but when I get home in the afternoon the red broadband light is flashing on my router and I have nothing. I mess with it for hours and nothing gets it working. I had a technician come out last week and he replaced my router but that didn't fix the problem. I think its a ground wire issue that either has something to do with my AC unit coming on and off constantly or the infernal heat outside, affecting the wiring. Why else does it work in the morning when it's cooler and not when it gets hot? Would love to hear some possible solutions from the community of Uverse users. ~ Theresa

Sometimes it comes back up on its own, but last night I kept resetting the router and the TV receiver, unplugging and replugging, hitting the reset button, etc and nothing would work. The broadband light will come on for just a second or two and then it goes back to flashing red. I know that it is some kind of interference with the wiring because I had this same problem same time last year. The tech came out and said that the ground wire wasn't wired correctly and he fixed it... I thought. It worked well for almost a year and now its back to doing the very same thing. The tech that came out last Friday night and acted like he didn't really know what to do to troubleshoot the ground wire situation, so he just replaced the router. The next day I started experiencing the same problem but it would eventually fix itself. It wasn't as hot then as it is now, and we are going to be getting even hotter over the next 4-5 days (106-109+) so I guess I won't have anything working for that duration.

  • How is the heat with the 2.6 Macbook Pros? And what to buy?

With enough money saved up, and the hopes of an new MacBook Pro system out the window I am about ready to throw down the big bucks on a new machine.
I am going to be using this machine for heavy graphic work, using almost all products within the Adobe suite package, around 5+ hours a day. I am also going to be doing some video work, nothing HD, no Oscar winning films, smaller clips here and there with some graphic flare to them. When I used my G4 Imac and Mac I was not able to run Photoshop and Imovie at the same time. When trying to convert a 4MB movie to an mpeg it took around 20 min, and when saving a 1G file with PS it took around 30 min. With this system I would like to be able to run many apps at the sametime, and have this saving time, and opening reduced. I work with large graphic files around at least pushing 700MB+. It also would be great if I was able to play Call of Duty 4 online on this machine as well.
    So my questions:
Heat? My friends had the earlier models and everyone knows how those were.
I am thinking about just maxing out the 17 MBP, but Im not sure if that would be to much. Feedback would greatly help me out.
    Thanks.

Do you need a laptop? Seriously, as the other post suggests the Mac Pro will be considerably faster. I had a MacBook Pro and currently a Mac Pro and the difference is considerable. Besides faster & larger drives, you get faster processors, more cores, more ram expandability, more drive expansion, PCI Express slots. Just check out the Apple store for spec comparisons-for the same money you get a lot more horsepower.

I have 2.28 GB 'other' used space on my iphone 4S 16GB running IOS 6.02 latest IOS and synced with IMAC using the latest OSX 10.8.2 and latest Itunes.

While I'm not based in England, I've seen a fair share of news stories this morning about the heat across the pond.According to an article from BBC:"The Met Office said a temperature of 36.2C (97.16F) had been recorded at Heathrow at 14:50 BST - the hottest UK temperature since 2006.A level 3 'heatwave action' heat-health alerthas been declared for all parts of England."And on a more personal note, my AC broke last night sooo looks like we're all dealing with our fair share of heat on this first day of July.My favorite way to cope with a high heat index? Finding AC... STAT. (Really need to get my apartment's AC fixed today...) But things like going to the movies, book stores, etc. can be a good escape from the high temperatures outdoors. What are some of your favorite ways to beat the heat?Stay cool UK SpiceHeads! :)

  • Can the heat from my computer hurt my battery?

Hi I just had a second battery put into my almost 4 year old macbook. The 1st replacement was put in last June I believe. I had it replaced again a few days ago because it would die out within 20 minutes and the computer wouldn't go to sleep it would just shut off. So I'm trying to keep this new battery healthy for as long as possible. What I was wondering was if the heat from the computer running can hurt my battery in the long run. The bottom of my computer is pretty much always hot. It is currently at 150 degrees F. I downloaded smcFanControl to increase the fan speed on my computer in hopes it would keep it cooler. I wanted to know if there was anything else I could do for it. Also how frequently should I cycle through my battery?
    Thanks,
    Kristina

" The bottom of my computer is pretty much always hot. It is currently at 150 degrees F."
On what sort of surface is your computer on? If it is on a flat hard surface, the temperature of your computer is too hot, and there's something wrong.

  • New Macbook Pro 15 inch heat on the left and back bottom.  Also, Fan is constantly running although I am only using Safari and it is a month old machine

I have a new macbook pro about a month old.  Have not used for anything but internet browsing it is a 15" machine, I can feel the heat from the left corner and back bottom.  Also, the fan is constantly running.  Is this something I can do to resolve.

Fans are supposed to run whenever the Mac is on. Default/minimun speed is 2000RPM.
How hot is hot? Mine is running the CPU cores at 45-50C, the Radeon GPU 35-40C when not engaged, the chassis sensors 30-38C. And current ambient temperature is 27C at my location. I currently have Safari, Mail, TextEdit and Temperature Monitor online.
If you want a quick check of what the Mac's hardware is up to, download & install the iStat Pro dashboard widget. If you want a detailed view of the 20 or so different temperature sensors on the thing, download & install Bresink's free Temperature Monitor. And if you want  to see ALL the different sensors it has, purchase Bresink's Hardware Monitor.

  • Has anyone felt the heat from their monitor?

I have a Penryn 2.8 GHz 24" iMac and I park my face fairly close to the screen (about 12 inches (30.5 cm) and I can feel the heat of the screen.
I took temperature readings with a lab thermometer on 9 points distributed on a grid across the screen and it averages about 103 degrees F(39.4 C), ranging from 101 F (38.3 C) to 107 F (41.6 C). These measurements were taken while the computer was idle with just the screen saver running and the brightness at maximum.
Has anyone felt the heat of their screen like this? Has anyone ever tried to measure it?
Where does all the heat come from, is it all derived from the backlight or from the computer itself (107 is from the upper left and the 101 is from the lower right)?

You might be interested in running SMCFanCOntrol to keep your temps down. I'd recommend keeping the HD under 50C and the Power Supply under 60C.

  • CPU heats up the FAN

There must be something on Kernel 2.6.30 and above, which makes PC heating up unnecessary. At the moment runing back to Ubuntu 9.04 with CPU temperature +48.0°C
On Arch or Ubuntu above Kernel 2.6.29,  the heat of the CPU goes easily over +60°C which makes work on HP Compaq 6510b laptop impossible without noisy CPU fan.
I read about users writing the same problem, on different Distros. I stay back on Kernel 2.6.29 (Ubuntu 9.04) which works without CPU heat problem.
Any real work around on that problem is greatly appreciated

I have a simillar problem here.  Installed Arch on my Christmas laptop, but under Arch the fan is spinning almost constantly.  While in the preinstalled Vista it only spun up when the computer started doing something.  I have not tested with other distros.  I have cpufreq running and using the ondemand governor, but it only supports 1.2 and 1.3 (full speed) GHz.  I don't know if 1.2 GHz is the lowest the CPU really can go and googling my CPU doesn't reveal much.

  • What is "other" in storage and how do I reduce it

what is "other" in storage and how do I reduce it

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    In Photos:
File ▹ Show Recently Deleted ▹ Delete All
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    For ODS:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
    For GP:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/GrandPerspective.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do I reduce the size of photos to use on website?

Thanks to the helpful person who recommended I use Rapidweaver to build a website, I am slowly getting somewhere. It is so simple and just like Apple applications that I think I can do this.
My problem now is that when I tried to transfer a photo from iPhoto to the draft website page it comes across so large it fills the page.
How do I reduce the size of photos so that I can bring them across? I need to show about 20 photos on the web pages. Do they need to be in a different format and if so how do I change it to the appropriate one?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Casuarina,
Go to this site and click on the Desktop Version Quicktime movie for a small tutorial. It will explain everything to you and you can see how you resize right within Rapid Weaver. It's really quite nifty.

All you can do is to restore and thus erase the iPod unless you can get a data recovery company to preserve the data.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

Start menu > control panel > appearance & personalization > display > calibrate color
I would adjust the keyboard setting back to midway before calibrating, this way you have some flexibility to use that again.

  • How can I reduce the file size of 3 videos?...

...without losing quality? These three videos are as follows in terms of size and length of the video:
    1) 148MB 19minutes
    2) 357MB 18minutes
    3) 164MB 14minutes
I tried using a video converter to reduce the bit rate in order to reduce the size, which i know affects the quality, but that did not actually work to reduce the file size this time.
I thought perhaps i should ask my forum friends for help on this matter. How,if at all, can I get all three of these MOV's under 100mb or to a total of 300mb for all 3 and preserve quality? It has to be able to play on an ipad (MOV or MP4). Thanks for your help!

I think that the point that David was trying to make is that reducing the amount of information originally provided by a product or part of it in order to make it smaller will inevitably reduce the efficiency of the product itself.
However, you don't have access to the original masters? Then you might be after a good compromise, meaning a video that can display decent quality while playing at its original frame size (say on the web).
Does this mean that there is no real way to reduce the size without losing quality?
If your target is the web there is a way to reduce the file size and still make it look decent enough. Re-compression means loss of source information but video compression is an art on its own and can produce some amazing results!
    Not without testing though.
Now back to my previous post, use Compressor to try to reduce the file size and compare the result quality. Trust your eyes and be honest with yourself.
