I have a 250 GB hard drive on my Mac Book Pro. I don't really have many programs other than Yosemite and Office 2011 on my computers hard drive but it shows I have used 219 gigs out of the 250 gigs. Where did all the space go? 2/3's of the space on the hard drive shows as "other". What should I do?

Carbon Copy Cloner will allow you to de-select directory trees, so you could use it to copy over everything EXCEPT the /Users directory tree.
Mac OS X is NOT just the System Folder. If you do not copy over the rest of Mac OS X, it will not boot. So better to exclude Users and take everything else, then it is to try and pick and choose.
The other approach is to install a New Mac OS X, and then copy over the stuff you want from the home folder(s) and reinstall any apps you want.

Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk Management. Please use the following tutorial:

You can use another Mac with a good optical drive together with a Firewire cable if both computers have Firewire ports.
You can have someone clone the installer DVD to an 8 GB USB flash drive.
You can take it to an Apple retailer and see if they will install for you.

there's no advantage to having the application on your external drive, you should leave it in your applications folder on your internal drive. if you insist on changing the app's location, you'll always have to then copy the app by hand to the external drive

When the drive is connected, use the Organize Library command in iTunes. If the entire library is located there, drag it to the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

Look before everyone points out that this has been asked lots of times before, I wanted to state that in this particular case it might be a little bit more complicated. You see I think I've been an idiot.
I backed up all my physical music onto my external hard drive, but only the physical music. So now I have my nice new laptop and haven't got a clue how to play the music off my external hard drive, since I don't have an itunes library on my external hard drive.
Anyway any help would be much appreciated.

Am I being a plonker, but it doesn't seem as simple as that. If I try and import via itunes it seems to want me to select the individual music file not the folder which holds all the music.
Also if I simply import it, won't my mac copy the files from my external hard drive back on to my laptop? Which makes me think I change the location where all the music is stored in itunes...?

How do I set Catalogue to new larger internal hard drive and then delete the files from the smaller

I have just had a new 1TB internal hard drive installed in my PC and then the original smaller internal 500GB hard drive cloned onto it. The new 1TB is now Local Dick C and the smaller 500GB has been changed from C and is now Local Disk F. PSE11 is running from the new C and all my pictures are on both C and F but the catalogue is pointing to F. I want to delete all of the old files on F to free up space since they are all cloned to the new 1TB C, so I want the PSE11 catalogue to point only to the pictures on C. I have tried creating a new Catalogue and importing my pictures from C. The images come in and look connected to C but, when I close PSE11 and then reopen that new catalogue, the image path reads F, as does the original catalogue. So, now I have two catalogues apparently point to F but I want to: 1) have only one catalogue pointing to C; 2) the delete catalogues pointing to F; 3) then reformat F: so I have a clean 500GB old hard drive for future expansion. Can some please help?

Grant, all I can say is that another user was having almost identical issues a month or so ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the discussion thread now but my feeling is that it never resolved satisfactorily while both drives were connected.
To save you a lot of work formatting, copying, erasing and so forth why not just unplug the SATA cable from the old drive and see if the Organizer then starts behaving nicely with the new drive. If it does then you can go the destructive route on the old drive.
Hopefully the poster who had the similar problem might read this and update us on his/her situation - if it got resolved and how.

How do I reduce used space on my internal high drive?

I am very concerned. I have been watching the available space on Mac HD internal hard drive. I have one external drive that Time Machine uses which is 931.39GB and also one that I am using for external storage [Format: Mac OS extended (Journaled) 372.29 GB not used with my time machine. I have been transferring high volume files over to my external storage drive, thinking that the available numbers for my Mac HD would go up, BUT they are, in fact, going down. What is going on? How can I help my internal HD before it runs out of space? I thought my music files were the highest volume files, so concentrated on moving them. I have clicked on my files in Finder to see what info it would give me re space that each folder/app uses, but I only see how many GB's are left. Don't know how to figure out what space each is taking. The only thing I could find was that when I opened iPhoto and clicked on Events, it did show me how much space it was using. Why can't I find out what other apps or files use?

After moving over your large files, such as your iTunes library, did you delete them from your internal hard drive (and empty the trash)? Copying things from one drive to another does just that: it copies them, it does not delete them from the source automatically.

If you follow those directions, you can point your iTunes to the external library and then safely delete the same thing from your internal (don't forget to empty the trash).
