How do I regenerate the music list in iTunes?

I reorganized my music files to remove duplicates. The iTunes view shows the old list of music with duplicates. How do I regenerate the view to show only the current music list?

Iam not absolutely clear what you have done.
If you manually deleted duplicate files or moved them, you library will have lot of tracks with exclamation marks.
These can be removed, either by collecting them in a playlist and deleting them from there, or with a script.
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
Live updating checked – after you run it, uncheck live updating or you may not be able to delete tracks.
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

The simplest method if you don't care about playlists and counts etc is to start a new library.
Close iTunes and drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml out of the iTunes folder to the desktop.
Start iTunes and an empty library is created. You can now add your music folder with File>>Add folder to library.

Song files are just files. You can copy them the way you copy any other files, like photos or documents.

How do I refresh the music in my itunes library? After several days of ripping cd's, merging numerous libraries, and deleting a ton of duplicates, I basically need itunes to start fresh. Suggestions?

Well you could just delete everything from iTunes, without deleting the files, and then import the media folder. Or you could delete the iTunes Library.itl file and let iTunes scan your media when it starts up. Or you could use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to Check for dead tracks on startup selected.
In general it is easier to use iTunes to manage the media folder rather than manipulating things by hand and then getting iTunes to play catch up. I have a script called DeDuper for automatic deduping, see this thread for background

If the music is embedded in the app and not available separately, then you can't.

That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.

My ipads and iphone are listed and included in my 5 devices in iTunes. But it should only be computers (my desktop and laptop). If I deauthorize them, so that I can add another laptop, how to I keep the music/purchases from itunes on them?

I would like to add another laptop to my authorized devices in iTunes store. But it says I have 5 devices already. 4 of these devices are actually iphones, ipads or itouch. I am afraid to deauthorize them so I can add a laptop. It will take the music/apps away, won't it? How do you include an itouch/ipad/iphone in your iTunes account without listing it as an authorized device? And where is the '10 devices' coming from? vs. 5? Very confused
We need to use the following devices with the same iTunes id:
2 laptops (soon to be three)
1 desktop
2 ipads
2 iphones
2 itouches
Is this possible?
To make things more complicated, a few of these devices will also use a DIFFERENT apple id for the cloud/mobile me.
But we all use the same iTUNES id for apps/ music in the family.

iTunes has a set list of genres programmed into it. Other genres are added and deleted as you edit the genre fields of files.

This is an older set of directions for editing the genres included in iTunes. I don't know if it still works with newer versions, and make sure you back up your computer before doing editing of this kind because unpredictable things can happen.

I am trying to re-download some songs I deleted by mistake. I go to purchases and it only shows me options for Apps and Books, no list for Music. How can I get the music list to show up or alternatively how can I re-download the songs?

I messed up and deleted a few songs by mistake. When I go to the "purchases" option it only lists apps and books that have been downloaded, but music is not an option to see what was downloaded previously. Anyone know how I can re-download the songs ?
