How do I reinject .msg files

Good afternoon:
After a slight imta config issue, one the email servers here currently is experiencing some backlog problems. I have approximately 17000 .msg files sitting in the user directories, and I am uncertain how to get those messages reinjected into their accounts.
From what I understand, the server translates the names of accounts from an old server (ie: joecool_xmail.com) to it's matching name on the new server (ie [email protected]). The imta config issue altered the translation somehow... at least from what I have been told.
Question: Is there a way to re-inject all 17000 .msg files to their appropriate user accounts? The message files are actually in the user directories (ie: /opt/sun/popmail.server.com/store/partition/primary/=user/##/##/=joecool@xmail%dcom/01/), but are not downloadable to a client or viewable in the webmail interface.
Ideas? Very green at this, so pardon if I have mis-worded things, or approached the wrong forum.

Thanks for the advice so far. Apologies about not
being able to provide valid problem descriptions.
Again, this is all very new. I'm just attempting to
assist with this hiccup while the staff member who
supports this server is out of the office.
The mass reconstruct ran through all of the
directories, but still didn't queue up the mail as I
would have hoped. We should be looking at the mail.log_current, to see what the actual goings on with incoming messages are, not guessing. . .
>
Background Info:
I know that these accounts were transitioned from an
iplanet server to the new server running the Sun
Messaging software. When the new server was brought
online, it just contained empty inboxes, but all of
them had valid names. Eventually stored messages
(around 7 days worth) were transitioned from the old
server to the new one. This injected worked just
fine, and everyone received their stored messages.
Today:
In the early afternoon (actually, this might have
been done before the weekend), the imta.cnf file was
altered so that the following was active:
! Rules to select local users
$* $U_$H@ims-ms-daemonThis rule does not appear valid.
The normal rule for JES Messaging Server looks like this:
.ims-ms-daemon $U%$H.ims-ms-daemon@ims-ms-daemon
the above is all on one line.
changing it without real reason can cause your server to stop delivering to mailboxes properly.
>
This was repaired, and our users reported that mail
was functioning again. During the time that this was
active, the server logged the following similar
alerts about 1700 times, for varying accounts of
course:
[14/Mar/2005:15:55:04 -0500] popmail
ims_master[15299]: General Notice: delivery for
[email protected]_ims-ms-daemon failed: Mailbox does
not exist
Assumptions I'm making
- the messages with the "_ims-ms-daemon" logged
errors are actually associated with .msg files in the
users directoriesunlikely to be true.
If you get an error that says, "mail was not delivered", or words to that effect, do not assume that the mail was in fact delivered. Most likely it was not. . .
The mail could have been either returned or deferred, depending on the error. If you note the mail.log_current entries for such messages, they can be reQueued or Returned, based on the letter shown.
If they were requeued, then they will be retried on server restart. If they were returned, then the sender will have to send them again.
- each .msg file counts towards the mailbox count
shown when I execute "mboxutil -l"That kind of depends. . . .
If you use a normal "fat" client, such as Mozilla to "delete" a message, you really aren't deleting anything. You're marking a file "to be deleted", and creating a copy in the trash folder.
Later, when you "compress" the folder, then the server is allowed to erase the files. You can also use the expiration subsystem to remove "to be deleted" files, otherwise they never go away.
You should examine some of the files. They're just text files, so you can see what's in 'em.
>
For instance,
/opt/sun/popmail.server.com/store/partition/primary/=u
ser/44/66/=joecool@xmail%dcom/01/ will contain the
following:
drwx------ 2 mailsrv mail 4096 Mar 14
17:53 .
drwx------ 6 mailsrv mail 4096 Mar 14
16:48 ..
-rw------- 1 mailsrv mail 4089 Mar 11
19:01 159.msg
-rw------- 1 mailsrv mail 14924 Mar 11
20:17 160.msg
-rw------- 1 mailsrv mail 91985 Mar 14
16:37 182.msg
-rw------- 1 mailsrv mail 7486 Mar 14
17:53 183.msg
About 20 messages, right? But when I execute
"mboxutil -l|grep joecool":
1 7 2005/03/14 17:53 primary no quota
quota user/[email protected]/INBOX
0 0 - - primary -
- user/[email protected]/Drafts
0 0 - - primary -
- user/[email protected]/Sent
0 0 - - primary -
- user/[email protected]/Trash
The numbers don't seem to be matching up as I'd
expect, and therefore I think I have about 1700
orphaned messages sitting in user directories.
Any other advice you could provide?Reconstruct -r will cause any messages that are valid (and not deleted) to show up. The fact that they're not appearing to mboxutil likely means that either the files are not valid message files, or that they are deleted. The server only removes such files in the overnight processing, even if the folder has been compressed (the expunge command has been given). If you see a "store.exp" file, then that will contain a list of files to be deleted.

  • How do I convert .MSG files with their attachments to a .PDF?

These files were profiled in Hummingbird, then exported to Workshare, but it is not bringing the attachments with it. I work for a litigation firm that is needing 300 separate MS Outlook emails converted to a .PDF to bates label.

    Hi integrity development,
To convert a photo on your iPhone to PDF, do the following:
Open the free Reader mobile app (if you don't have it, you can download it from the App store).
Tap the menu in the upper-left corner (the three horizontal red lines).
    Tap Camera to PDF.
Tap either Take Photo or Select Photo.
Select your photo and tap Use.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • How do you change .msg file extensions

I don't know if this is the correct section for this question but I am trying to move all my PC data to my new Mac. Although I have moved most of my outlook data across OK, the section in "notes"has an .msg extension and I cannot get this to translate to the Mac. Any help would be appreciated as I want to store it in Documents in my home folder.

    Hello
My dictionary of name extensions claims:
    .MSG
    - Microsoft Mail Message (Exchange)
    - Novell Message File
    - Text ASCII
It will cost nothing to try to replace .msg by .txt

The user has sent a message using MS Outlook, which packages attachments in it's own format ( arrogantly assuming that all recipients have Outlook too). This will take care of it for you by converting the file to its original.

You can convert your MSG file(s) to EML format, edit Date: header in EML file with any plain text editor (like Notepad) and then convert it back to MSG.

    # 1 - try to not create lots of interim items as it make it harder to shutdown Outlook.
    # 2 - To delete all items in a folder:
          $namespace.GetDefaultFolder(10).Items |%{$_.delete()}
The following code of your makes no sense.  What are you trying to do?
    $SourceFiles = Get-ChildItem -path "D:\ccc\*" -include *.msg      #-recurse
    foreach ($_ in $SourceFiles)
            $x ++
            $MailItem = $_
            $olMailItem = $NameSpace.OpenSharedItem($MailItem)
      [void]$olMailItem.Move($objContactFolder)
    This is a better construct:
    Get-ChildItem -path "D:\ccc\*" -include *.msg |
         ForEach-Object{
              $nameSpace.OpenSharedItem($_).Move($namespace.GetDefaultFolder(10))
But I don't think it is correct.  What are you trying to do?

  • How do I open a file with an .msg extension please?

Hello, can anyone tell me how I can open a file with an .msg extention please?

On a Classic operating system, which predates 2001, it may be difficult, except with a really old version of BBEdit Lite from http://www.barebones.com/
Newer versions of BBEdit or Textwrangler can probably also open it if you don't have a Classic operating system.
Microsoft Entourage and Outlook can probably also open such documents.   Outlook Express was available for Classic operating systems as well, but it may be too new for it to read those documents.

  • Outlook Add-In Mail Item How to save the mail item (which is in compose mode) as a .msg file in non editable form?

    Hello,
I am working on an outlook add-in where I have a custom button on the ribbon tab of compose mail item.
My requirement is to save the mail item currently being composed as a .msg file at a predefined location on click of my custom "Save" button. I am able to do it using "mailItem.SaveAs(...)".
But my problem is, when I open the .msg file in outlook, it is opened in compose mode but I want to see it as a read-only item. For e.g. exactly the way it looks when I save it after it's sent.
Could you share any ideas on how to achieve this?
    Thanks,
    Vinay

Strictly speaking you need to *remove* the MSGFLAG_UNSENT bit (=8), not set the MSGFLAG_READ bit, so setting the PR_MESSAGE_FLAGS property to either 0 or 1 will work. Keep in mind that you can remove the MSGFLAG_UNSENT bit only before the message
is saved for the very first time. If you touch the bit after the message was saved, the message will stay unsent.
Also note that this may not be what the user wants since the message will become read-only when reopened.

  • How can email internet headers be retained when rendering MSG files to PDF?

I am using Acrobat X Pro and it is a simple task to create a PDF rendition of an Outlook email message, either directly from Outlook using the Acrobat plug-in or by saving as an MSG file and then converting to PDF. However, all of the internet header metadata within the MSG file is lost. I've been told by someone from the PDF Association that it is possible to retain the internet header data when converting Outlook emails to PDF but cannot see how this can be done with Acrobat X Pro. Is this only possible with Acrobat XI or is another product or plug-in needed?

Unfortunately the entire header information isn't stored in the Outlook messsage. Because Outlook is a MAPI client, it doesn't store messages in native SMTP format.  So messages in Outlook are converted to MAPI, and the data is stored in a set of MAPI properties. You'll need to retrieve the properties in order to print them (or create a PDF). I've never tried it, but here is an example of a macro for Outlook that will attempt the following:
Retrieve the internet message headers from the original message and store them in the body of the new post item.
Add the subject and received time so that you can visually "see" that these headers go with the original item.
Attaches the original item to the new post.
Asks if you are ready to print both the new post item and the original together.
