adware seems to have taken over my computer. how do i remove it? does apple have any tools to do this? overtime i use safari to identify a problem, i get some non-apple sites trying to sell me something.

You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

On your Macs, open System Preferences. If you don't see MobileMe but you do see iCloud under Internet & Wireless then everything is syncing via iCloud not MobileMe.
Try this on your Macs... Deselect Calendars in System Preferences > iCloud then reselect that box then restart your Macs.
See if that prevents the duplicates.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It appears from this that McAfee has an uninstaller. For much software there is no installer and removing it simply involves finding it in the Applications folder and dragging it to the Trash. Yes, this can leave some small files in Library but they are normally not an issue.

I use Chrome browser mostly so do not know if this malware also affects Safari on my Macbook Pro. The worst part is that startpoint will close Chrome on its own and I lose all the open tabs. I immediately close that tab and reopen what I can remember, but I deeply resent a malware program taking control of my system, and I expect it is potentially dangerous. Any experience removing this? I checked the extensions folder in Chrome and there is nothing there related to startpoint.

I also have disabled two Firefox extensions and removed the Safari extension, but can't seem to delete it from Firefox (it shows up grayed out).
I did find an installer in user > library > Caches

and deleted that, but "torrent handler 1.1" is still grayed out. I have a feeling even reinstalling Firefox won't fix it but that's my next step.

Im currently setting up an apple network to work with my Active Directory and so far so good. I have Active Directory authenticating users and open directory restricting access to features. In Finder i have been able to create a policy to remove the objects from the side panel e.g shared, places and devices. My problem is i am unable to remove "network" from clicking "mac name". The reason for me doing this is because it opens a massive security hole in my network. When i map/mount a windows directory e.g The users home directory, it then displays every share on that server apart from the hidden shares when you go to network>servername. Its not possible to hide all the shares because they are needed by windows e.g Netlogon and SYSVOL. So my question is how can i remove or can i remove Network

But they can also be accessed by Windows, also when they are NOT visible. So just by hiding the folder, you don't add any security. If it had to be accessed there is always a way to without seeing the symbol. Set up ACL permissions for the shares so users can only access data they are authorized to.
