How do I remove "Adobe Flash Install Manager" malware

This morning when I started the Macbook Pro 13", OSX 10.9.5, a pop-up box came up asking me to enter my system password for the "completer" to make changes. I cancelled the box without giving my password. In the Apple support community for OSX 10.7 general opinion seems to be that it is caused by Genieo, but I don't find it or any related items in my computer. I think the culprit is "Adobe Flash Player Install Manager" in Applications-Utitlities. I must have downloaded it thinking it was a legit Adobe Flash update. If I try to trash it I get a pop-up saying Finder wants to make a change and asking for password. How can I remove this?

Thank you for the reply. I've tried to follow Apple's instructions but I didn't find any of the files mentioned or listed there.
If you're having an app named "Completer" asking for your password, Genieo is definitely installed. If you didn't find anything, my guess would be that you were not looking in the right places. Go back and follow Apple's instructions more carefully. If those instructions are giving you trouble, use the AdwareMedic app that Kurt recommended. It will automatically find and remove all components of Genieo.

  • How do i keep adobe flash installed on windows 7 with IE9

I have been having a lot of trouble, i have windows 7, 64 and 32 bit with Internet Explorer 9, I can download Adobe Flashplayer fine, but will loose the install after I shutdown and re start my computer, I have tried many different ways that was suggested by different web sites, none work for the long haul.  The control panel shows 32 bit adobe flash Active X 11.6.602.180 and plugin, 11.6.602.180 but will not open with going to the download site again, and re download with the same results after shutdown.  I am at a loss for thought, please advise what to do.  Thanks Richard Holes,

    Hi Richard,
I'd like to investigate what's occurring on your system.  Would you be willing to run the following steps to generate a debug log for me?  If this looks like too much work, please let me know and if you're willing we can schedule a quick desktop sharing session so I can do this on your system for you.
    1. Download the flash_report.bat file attached to this post and extract it to a folder on your desktop
    2. Download “SetACL (executable version)_2.zip” from: http://bit.ly/WEppuY
    3. Extract the appropriate “SetACL.exe” from either the 64 bit or 32 bit folder and place it alongside the flash_report.bat file that you extracted in step 1.
    3. Right click flash_report.bat and select “Run as administrator”
Once run, please copy/paste the contents of the flashreport.txt file into a reply or email to me at [email protected]
If you'd like to try fixing this issue, please walk through the steps outlined in this FAQ and let me know if they helped.

That message is just a standard one issued, mainly for Windows users, you can disregard it if you didn't install any anti-virus. (OS X has one installed by Apple that doesn't interfere)
It's just some forms of anti-malware are really paranoid and lock the entire machine down. (like Norton)

How do I watch flash based videos without adobe flash installed using Safari?

Once you have Chrome installed, activate the Develop menu in Safari (go to Safari Preferences > Advanced > Show Develop Menu). You then will see under the Develop menu the Open Page With option and Chrome will be listed there.
So each time you open a page with Safari requiring Flash, you use that menu option to open the same page in Chrome.

  • How can I download adobe flash for my 2006 imac OS 10.4.11? Lost it recently and repeated attempts manage to download but it then does not work.

How can I download adobe flash for an imac intel using 10.4.11? This disappeared recently and although I go to adobe and download successfully, when I try to access video on web it says I need to download adobe. Very frustrating. Can anyone help?

Looking at Adobe's site there is version 10.3 for Intel Macs running OSX 10.4 or 10.5.  There is version 11 for Macs running OSX 10.6 or newer.  Most web sites don't really need the newest FlashPlayer, but if you are trying to view one that really does intensive video then maybe it does require Flash 11.  You aren't very specific as to which exact error message you are seeing.
If a site does require FlashPlayer 11 then you will have to upgrade your operating system.

Do you have the Plugin version of Adobe Flash installed?
There are two different versions of Flash, the '''''ActiveX''''' version for IE and the '''Plugin''' version used by most other browsers.
1.Download the Flash Plugin version setup file from here: <br />
    [http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version]. <br />
Save it to your Desktop.<br />
    2. Close Firefox using File > Exit <br />
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed, <br />
    {XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
    3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
    4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
    * On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen). <br />

This is asking you to store persistent Flash Cookies (meaning, they are not deleted when you delete your ordinary cookies.) Some sites will not work unless you allow them. Here's how to prevent them from getting on your computer in the first place, while keeping Flash and these sites working.
If you use Firefox, get the Add-on Better Privacy, which will delete them when you quit Firefox.
Or, trick these sites into thinking they are actually storing this crap: (These directions are for Flash Player 10 and above.)
Using the following, no LSOs (Flash Cookies) will be stored and yet Flash is tricked into thinking they are. As far as I can tell all sites employing Flash will function properly; nothing will be broken, including Comedy Central with its streaming video content. (In the directions above, I had mistakenly recommended setting the Storage panel in the local Flash Pref Pane to not allow. It must be left as "Allow sites to store...." This was why the Comedy Central clip I had been trying to play wasn't working.)
First, to get a new, clean folder, start by trashing the Macromedia folder in ~/Library/Preferences. That's in your user Library. Next, do not visit the local Flash Pref Pane in Sys Prefs. Instead, go directly to Adobe Global Privacy settings in the Adobe Settings Manager and set Camera and Mic to "Always deny." Visiting the Settings Manager will automatically create a new, clean Macromedia folder.
(If you first visit the local Flash Pref Pane, the new Macromedia folder will lack the empty default #shared objects folder and its also empty enclosed folder (this is the one with a combination of characters and numerals.) I haven't tested to see what will happen if those two folders are not present. I assume, providing the Macromedia folder is unlocked, they would be created as soon as one visits a Flash site, but they will not be empty and this would defeat the entire purpose.)
If you visit the local Flash Pref Pane now, all the defaults will remain, except for the Camera and Mic panel, where "Always deny" will be checked. Next, it seems prudent to go to the Playback panel and check "Block all sites from using peer assisted networking." But, important, in the Storage panel, you must leave the default "Allow sites to save...." checked. This is how sites using Flash are tricked into thinking storage of Flash Cookies is being allowed when they are, in fact, not.
Next, go back to the Macromedia Folder and, using GetInfo/CMD-I, recursively lock all its enclosed folders. This means starting from the back working ones way up to the front. And, finally, lock the enclosing Macromedia folder itself. Nothing gets stored and everything keeps on working.
(Thanks to Anon at XYMer's for this.)
EDIT: Maybe something I don't know, but I don't think AdBlock in Safari will defeat Flash Cookies. There may be some Safari extension that will.
    Maybe this extension

  • How do I set Adobe Flash Player as the default program to open SWF files?

    Basic Overview
I have this working fine at my home laptop, however I need this working for projects at school.
Whenever I want to open an SWF file at home, I simply double click it and open it in Adobe Flash Player (Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22) and I have no problems!
However, when I am at school I have to run SWF files within Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash Player IS installed, but the SWF files are not opened in that directly, they are opened within Internet Explorer.
    At Home
If I right click an SWF file at home and select "Open With" and then "Choose Default Program...", Adobe Flash Player is already there under the name 'Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22', so I can simply select it as the default. (On my home laptop)
    At School
At school if go to "Open With" and then "Choose Default Program...", Adobe Flash Player IS NOT there, only Internet Explorer and some other programs in the other programs box. (On my school laptop)
    Question
How can I assign Adobe Flash Player as the default program for opening SWF files (on my school laptop)? If I select "Browse..." and go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash there is no file with a description of 'Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22', is the file for the actual program located somewhere else or have I just no looked properly in the folder?
I really need these files opening in Adobe Flash Player directly and not in Internet Explorer (I know you can set the view to 100% and have it sized correctly)
Thanks you to everyone who helps!
-Charlie! (Yes I know I don't need to write this in a forum)

The standard Flash Player is a browser add-on, and not a standalone player.  So what actually opens when you open an SWF file at home?  Flash Player Projector?
If so, you also need to download it at your school, from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html, then do the file association.

  • Ubuntu 10 (Linux) & Firefox 3.6 ~ How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in & ActiveX control

Ubuntu 10.045 (Linux) and Firefox 3.6.3  ~  How to uninstall the Adobe  Flash Player plug-in & ActiveX control
In general Adobe needs to offer Ubuntu (Linux) support.  I don't use Windows anymore and will go with whatever company provides me the Plug In's I need to function.  In this case at the current time, I can't use Adobe flash Player to view You Tube video's.  I followed the link that helps a user fix the problem:
Solve a Problem: The video won't play:
    http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=56115
I then saw that you suggested that I first needed to uninstall any older versions of the Flash Player and then install the latest version of the Flash player.  I clicked on the link find out how to uninstall it here:
How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
They didn't offer any help with Ubuntu 10.045 (Linux).  Please offer the instructions and automatic (non-terminal) uninstaller.  Also, I want an automatic installer for Ubuntu 10 (Linux) & Firefox 3.6 that is easy like like you have for Windows and like Sun's Java has for Linux.

You should go to this site to see what versions of Flash Player and Shockwave Player you have installed.
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
The versions you are listing (10.0 r12, 10.0 r2) appear to be Shockwave Plauer versions, not Flash Player.
If you want to uninstall Flash Player, there should be an uninstaller in the install directory.  I do not know where that is on Linux.

  • How to intercept the Adobe Flash plugin block by firefox checking for vulnerabilities?

The trouble is the grey block, that asking to update Adobe Flash because the version is vulnerability. If the block of Flash object is smaller, then 100px height - there is an empty space, but not gray block with talking about version. I need to intercept the moment using JavaScript, when Firefox checking the version of plugin to make changes in my HTML code to make a GIF, but not flash.
How to intercept the Adobe Flash plugin block by Firefox checking for vulnerabilities from JavaScript code?

hello, i don't think that this would be possible (but i'm not sure). what you could do is try to sniff the version of flash that is installed & the firefox useragent and just assume that old versions of the plugin will be blocked in this combination.
if you need more help about that, i'd recommend posting in a forum that is more specialized & knowledgeable in web development like http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=25, since we here on the firefox support forums are primarily focused on support for end-users...
