How do I remove an unnecessary kernel extension?

I ran an Etre Check this morning and found I have a kernel extension that I do not need. It has likely been on my computer since I bought it new and had my old Windows files migrated to my iMac by the Apple Store. I do not now, nor have I ever had, a Kodak printer, so I think this just got loaded with Kodak Gallery when I had a Kodak camera.  All my photos were migrated to iPhoto and Kodak Gallery does not exist on my mac.  It shows up as a kernel extension on the Etre Check report but is listed as an (unloaded) Application in my System files.  I tried to drag it from the System files to Trash but that resulted in everything listed below it being highlighted which I certainly didn't want.  It does not show up under Applications in Finder.  Here is how it shows up in the report, which was otherwise normal.  Thanks for any help with this.

Thanks for your response. I couldn't delete it in the Systems files that way.  I finally found it under Applications Support in Finder and was able to drag it to Trash.

  • How do i install the speedit Kernel extension?

I'm not used to using terminal, and i can't understand the text read me that came with the speedit .kext. I have Ministat 2 installed in my dashboard, it was just updated to show intel mac processor temperatures if you have this extension installed, but i have no idea how to do it... i found a few posts on here about how to have it load at start-up, i'm pretty sure i want that too. Please help me! thank you
    -Ted

Place the kext in the /Users/Shared/ folder on your hard disk, and then open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Copy and paste the following into the Terminal:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /Users/Shared/speedit.kext
Press the Enter key and then type in your administrator password; nothing will appear onscreen while you are typing it. This will prepare the kext for loading. To actually load the kext, issue the following command:
    sudo kextload /Users/Shared/speedit.kext
If the time elapsed between the first and second commands is five minutes or less, you will not be asked to type in your password the second time. The kext is now loaded, and you can use Ministat.
To load the kext on startup, open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
do shell script "kextload /Users/Shared/speedit.kext" password "" with administrator privileges
Enter your administrator password where indicated, and then save the script as an application. You can now double-click it to load the kext, or put it in the list of login items for your account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences to have it run on login.

  • How do I restore IOUSBFamily kernel extension?

Whilst trying to get a USb device to work in Parallels I followed some advice on modifying the IOUSBFamily extenion to allow Parallels to take control over the device.
It made no difference. I copied the backup file back into /System/Library/Extensions/ but now OS X will not detect my USB printer. Clearly I have messed up the USB drivers.

  • How to remove Kernel extensions, Slow Restart 10.7.5, Should I really upgrade to 10.9?

Hello everyone, after spending a few days reading various posts about similar topics, here is a breakdown of my question:
(I made a Time Machine backup on an external HD, even though EtreCheck says "Not Configured")
1:  I used EtreCheck to diagnose my laptop, and I do not know how to locate the Kernel Extensions in the computer to eliminate them, or "solve" them.  Can I find them with Finder?  If so, do I just delete the files?  How else can I pinpoint the issues EtreCheck shows me?
2:  I am experiencing the "15 second waiting period" with the gray spining wheel when I restart, which only started happening about three weeks ago.
3:  After multiple attempts, it seems that Mavericks 10.9 is finally downloading from the App Store, but I would rather not upgrade if I don't need to, since 10.7.5 has been working well until now.
MAINLY, this is important to me since I am using Abelton Live 9 with a new 64-bit Saffire Pro-14 firewire audio interface, and it has started clicking during playback, which cannot be solved with buffering/latency fixes.  This is the main reason I got this laptop (for audio production) and I want to make sure it continues to function at the highest level for that purpose.
To be clear, I have not experienced a "kernel panic" that requires me to shut down...  I am simply trying to maintain my system for optimal performance by deleting problem files.
Thanks to anyone who can give me some basic daemon/kernel hunting instructions.

OS X upgrades don't cause problems, they reveal them. Every OS X upgrade since at least Jaguar has elicited complaints ranging from crashes, slowdowns, reduced battery life, everything short of an outbreak of hives. Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
In your case, one definitely problematic system modification is the PACE anti-piracy app that does not appear to have been updated since Snow Leopard. I do not know what software you have that may require it, but it should either be updated or uninstalled before upgrading to Mavericks.
There are others that could be a concern including a launch daemon curiously named "com.hidden.deamon.plist". Well-written software should not be attempting to hide anything, but perhaps that was just an unfortunately chosen name. (Edit to add: read http://hiddenapp.com/support/installation/how-uninstall/ - it doesn't appear to have been updated for Mavericks either.)
If your boot time is excessive then an impending hard disk failure may be the cause. You must have a backup strategy, and rule out hardware failure as the possible cause of that symptom. If you have a backup strategy, then upgrading to Mavericks carries no risk whatsoever. If you don't like Mavericks, you can always restore your system from its backup. Merely having a backup often seems to preclude the need for it.
I upgraded many portable and desktop Macs of various ages and configurations. In every case not only was the upgrade completely uneventful, every Mac enjoyed quantifiable performance improvements. None of them have the notoriously problematic software or incompatible hardware modifications that seem to have caused others misery though. In broad terms those can be categorized as third party "anti-virus" or "security" junk, "cleaning" or "optimizing" utilities, any number of invasive Google services including Chrome, and similarly ill-conceived system hacks.
In your case the only potential concern with which I am familiar is PACE. Since I have no way of knowing what software you use I can only speculate what may require it, but I seem to recall PACE is or was used by Avid Pro Tools. Does that help?

  • How to get rid of kernel extension under maverick

    Hello,
this kernel extension (com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice          (1.1 - SDK 10.5)) seems to be causing kernel panic and shuts down my computer randomly. Could you please explain how to unsintall it
    Thank you in advance

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • How can I remove a Disabled Extension not compatible with Firefox 4.0.1? I just want to remove it... I don't want to wait for a compatible update. Why can't I remove it?

When I upgraded from 3.XX to 4.0.1, it informed me that 2 extensions were not compatible and it never gave me the option to remove them. Firefox 4.0.1 disabled them and now I'm not able to remove them.
Also they were added by Acrobat Pro X (Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.0) and Nokia Ovi Suite (Firefox Synchronisation Extension 7.3.4.51).
These extensions won't probably be updated unless they update the software that installed them. With this said, How can I remove the disabled extensions? Why it doesn't give me a button to remove them to start with?

I think it's not the problem of compatibility. Extensions installed into Windows registry won't have a remove button ( or it's greyed out ). For these extensions, you can have a look into these keys:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
If you are under a 64bit OS as I am, you may also try this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
And you may find the registry entries corresponding to the extensions you want to remove. Just export them to a backup.reg, then delete these entries. Firefox will do the rest, but it seems that fx still leaves extensions.rdf untouched. You can also delete the RDF entries corresponding to those extensions inside extensions.rdf
    cf: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_add-ons#Windows_Registry_extension
BUT the Wow6432Node key wasn't mentioned in the above article
I had to search the registry to find out the entry corresponding to a Fiddler2 extension, then I found the Wow6432Node key. I also saw the Nokia Ovi Suite entry beside the Fiddler2 entry.
    Hope it helps.

  • How do I uninstall a kernel extension

I recvently installed the drivers for a USB graphics tablet.
But it didn't work as well as I'd like so I no loner use the device.
There are no un-install instructions with the device, and no un-install instructions on the manufacturers website.
When I email them they just say they don't support Mac OS X despite the driver being in the box!!!
Now that I've unplugged the device, my system log is full of dozens and dozens of these messages....
Jan 13 12:53:48 localhost kernel[0]: IOUSBInterface: family specific matching fails
Jan 13 12:53:48 localhost kernel[0]: IOUSBInterface: family specific matching fails
Jan 13 12:53:48 localhost kernel[0]: IOUSBInterface: family specific matching fails
Everytime I boot I see dozens of these messages repeated over and over.
So how can I un-install the driver for this device?

Without knowing exactly what was installed...
Kernel extensions can be found in /System/Library/Extensions
There should be a .kext bundle corresponding to the driver you installed. Delete that to uninstall it. Be very careful not to delete the wrong one though!

Better Surf seems to arrive on a computer with other software. You should take a hard look here:

Click the install date column heading so you can see what was installed together. Some of these are obviously not what you wanted, but the problem is, some free software is hardwired to keep putting the junk back on your computer. So consider removing EVERYTHING that was bundled together.

    Hi Pero127,
What I mean is was this a package installer, or an actual extension?
If just an extension, when you double click one, the OS asks if you want the extension installed. In which case, yes, that is the only item installed on your computer and you can then just uninstall it.
But if it was an application installer package, then it could have installed many more items onto your computer than just the extension. The rest will still be on your drive after removing the extension.

  • HT201262 What specific kernel extensions are considered essential?

I want to manually find out what's causing a problem - redcine-x exports fine in safe boot mode, but not in normal mode, but i can't figure out what it is.
It's not any login item or anything in startup items in library (or font - any of the other things safe mode disables). It's a specific kernel extension that's been installed (in system/library/extensions) but i can't go thru one by one - each test in redcine-x takes 20 minutes at least (before it kernel panics), plus many are required and would prevent the computer from booting if i removed them.
what's a list of REQUIRED kexts that i can leave in there and remove all the ones that safe mode disables? or what's the list of kexts that safe mode disables?
I've been looking everywhere for this but nobody seems to care what safe mode actually disables from the extensions directory....
    Any ideas?
EDIT - i answered this myself. You can do to about this mac then system profiler or whatever it's called now and get a list of loaded extensions there. Compare it to the list in safe boot and there we have what i need. now i'll remove the extensions safe boot disables and go from there in standard trouble shooting tactics. i remember conflict catcher on os 8 and 9 - ahh those were the days.
    Message was edited by: benjackson

Well, it needed to go even deeper! I hope this helps someone.
So after making sure the same kexts were listed as loaded - like the list was EXACTLY the same, same number...it still wasn't working (the transcode in redcine-x)
Just remember this would apply to any replicatable fault where you get a kernel panic.
So what i did was reboot in safe mode and verbose mode - which logs the results of that to the system.log in /private/var/log
open this in console and look for what extensions safe boot is saying it's going to 'suppress the personalities' of.
I went thru, and did that. Now, some of what it wants to suppress is again, only inside the package in the plugins directory of that particular kext. so i just copied (made a backup) of the whole thing and then went in and only deleted the plugin it didn't want. I"m assuming other plugins ARE needed.
I missed a few, tested, failed, and did it again - had another 6 or so. Now my NORMAL boot looks the same as SAFE boot, and safe boot doesn't suppress any kexts. It has to do with the OSBundleRequired in the plist of important kexts, as per here:
    OSBundleRequired
The OSBundleRequired property informs the system that your kext must be available for loading during early boot. Kexts that don’t set this property can’t load during early boot. You can specify one of the following values for this property:
RootThis kext is required to mount root, regardless of where root comes from—for example, platform drivers and families, PCI, or USB.
Network-RootThis kext is required to mount root on a remote volume—for example, the network family, Ethernet drivers, or NFS.
Local-RootThis kext is required to mount root on a local volume—for example, the storage family, disk drivers, or file systems.
ConsoleThis kext is required to provide character console support (single-user mode)—for example, keyboard drivers or the ADB family.
    Safe Boot
This kext is required even during safe-boot (unnecessary extensions disabled)—for example, mouse drivers or graphics drivers.
So testing again, see how I go.
