How do I remove custom privileges on my drive.

Hi, I have a 2010 macmini running MAC OS 10.6.8. I am having some grief with an external drive (Home 136rv)I have been setting up as a media centre HDD.
I was attempting the setup the sharing for this drive so I could copy files (music+video) from eyetv through my MBP.
The problem seems to be only with the privileges on the external HDD.
I had setup sharing and and then went to 'apply to enclosed items' so all the files could be shared.
The next time I started the MacMini and mounted the drive all the privileges had been set to custom:
cmp (me)-custom
Staff-custom
everyone- custom
I've tried disk utilities and after ages and freezing twice it asked me to repair disk, which I did.  However my access is still messed up.
I can't even open the HDD -message "The folder Home_136RV can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents
I have seen discussions on the use of terminal but haven't had any experience using this.
Where do I start to repair my HDD as there are lots of files, including are family videos

After MANY frustrating hours of trying everything mentioned above and more to regain permission to my external hard drives I found an easy and fast solution! The best part about this solution is you don't personally have to mess with Terminal. FYI- I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, though I believe this solution will work for anyone on Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
1. Download BatChmod.app (http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html).
2. Click on the "File" button and choose the external drive in question.
3. Under Owner, choose "root" and check all 3 boxes (R, W and X). Under Group, choose "admin" and again check all 3 boxes. Under Everyone, again check all 3 boxes. **make sure you've checked the boxes and not just put a line in them...
4. In Options box, check "Change ownership and privileges," check "Clear ACLs (10.5+)" and check "Unlock." Do not check "Clear xattrs."
5. Finally, DO NOT check the box at the bottom that says "Apply to enclosed folders and files," because this is probably similar to what got you locked out of your own external hard drive in the first place!
6. Click on the "Apply" button.
7. Now open finder and open your external hard drive!

  • How do I remove movies from my hard drive?

I tried to update my system and it says that I don't have enough space on my hard drive. When I went to delete files it shows quite a bit of space being taken up by movies. I don't have any movies on my iTunes but they are on my cloud. How do I remove them from my hard drive? I am a rookie Mac user so if you can help please help with steps. Thanks!

I suggest that you download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.   It will show all of your files and the respective sizes.  Delete or transfer to an external HDD what you do not want on your internal drive.  Don't forget to empty Trash.
    Ciao.

  • How do i remove a place from hard drive places menu

how do i remove a place from hard drive places menu?

Yes, I saw that Carolyn. I should have included that in my previous post. I asked the person who did the change for me and had no new information to provide. He said he only did the normal change of information to receive and send POP mail. He did nothing else that should have affected the mailboxes. In fact, he made the same changes to his own Macbook Pro and had no loss of emails from his mailboxes.
So, what it boils down to is a simple question that may not require a simple answer, but my guess is there is a simple procedure to restore a mailbox's data from the Users folder on the hard drive. If the info is gone from Mail, but still on the hard drive, then it would stand to reason that we could stop focusing on what caused it to happen (especially if we don't know), and just make an attempt to Restore it - if I could find someone who knows the procedure to restore a mailbox.
It may require a trip to the Genius Bar if it so complex that no one here has experience with it. I would think that from time to time people have to restore the mail box.
Thanks so very much Carolyn for all your interest. If you know anyone who could restore mailbox, please see if they would offer a suggestion as to the steps to do so.

  • How di i remove my e-mac hard drive?

My e-mac is inoperable: I can transfer files to my i-mac by putting the e-mac hard drive into a USB case. How do I remove the e-mac hard drive?

    dave the bookman,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Taner Sezer has a valid warning about the power switch when disassembling eMacs; there are also warnings not to come anywhere near the CRT assembly (especially the CRT yoke) without using a static discharge tool to disperse the dangerous voltage retained by the eMac even after extended time turned off. Bearing that in mind, you can Google "Apple eMac Upgrade Guide" and look for www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com in the results.
One suggestion/warning: external USB hard drives (at least on PPC Macs) are known to be flakey and generally require third-party drivers with less-than-steller track records. A Firewire enclosure is more reliable; a dual Fireire/USB 2.0 enclosure, while costing more, will let you use the hard drive on multiple platforms (including Windows with the addition of software like MacDrive.

  • How do I remove custom .exe icon?

I used a custom icon for publishing a set of recordings. I need to rebrand these and cannot remove the custom icon file designation. I tried removing the file path from the Publish dialog, but it refused to unlink that ico file and the file path persists no matter what I do. I was able to make it generate a "generic" icon by selecting an invalid file as the ico, but thats a poor solution.
So, how do I get a recording to 'forget" it had a custom icon?
    Captivate 7  build 7.0.0.118
    Thank you

    Hello ,
I don't think you will be able to remove that custom icon , But you can use any of your designed icon having an extension as .ico  .

  • How do I remove custom images from Windows 8 lock screen

I have a personal photos on the lock screen and account picture that I want to delete but cannot figure out how to remove them. I have read through dozens of solutions and there is no option to delete them I have deleted all skydrive data,
removed my computer from the skydrive sync options, and looked in the c:\windows\Web\screen folder but still have no solution.
How do I get rid of them?

    Hi,
For the issue, the current user account picture (tile image) is stored in the hidden folder below.
C:\Users\Public\Public Account Pictures\S-1-5-21.......(GUID for user account)
The recent user account pictures used for your account are stored in the hidden folder below.
    C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures
The default user account picture images are in the hidden system folder below.
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Default Account Pictures
I suggest you select a new picture to update your account picture.
1.On your Start screen, click on your user tile at the top right corner, click on Change account picture.
2.On the Personalize, then click "Browse" to select a new picture.

  • How do I remove custom access on a networked external drive?

My external drive (1 partition, named Zumtobel) is networked to my MacBook. It is USB connected to Airport Extreme. Everything works perfectly -- including Time Machine -- even though TM is always wanting to redo the backup to ensure accuracy.. But the info pane on Zumtobel shows that I have custom access. There is no padlock. Greyed out is Everyone showing no access.
I am pretty sure I know what caused the problem. When setting up the drive, I had it USB connected to my MacBook. I then reconnected it to the Airport Extreme, set up Time Machine, and put on a bunch of media files. Instead, I should have started from scratch with the drive first connected to Airport Extreme and then partitioning with Disk Utility before I installed Time Machine and the media files.
Now, when I remove the external drive and USB connect it to my MacBook, the padlock and all my options for sharing and permissions all appear.
My question now is that without having to start again back at square one, repetitioning the drive off Airport Extreme, is there a way to remove the custom access by using commands in Terminal? Or any other way without destroying data on the external drive?

    1 go to Terminal.
    2 type 'man chmod'.
3 navigate in the command line to the drive you want to update.
4 use what you learned from the man pages.

  • How to completely remove all traces of MSI driver?

After waiting for 4 weeks to see if the MSI 6800 Ultra was going to be available, I have given up.  I have removed my GeForce 5900 128M VTD and installed my new 6800GT, but I cannot remove the MSI Information and MSI Clock tabs from the Display Properties window.  I have already tried DriverCleaner, but the MSI tabs still remain.
Does anyone know how to remove them, short of a full system reformat and re-install?

Actually, that needs to be updated, it was written prior to the DOT implementation.
The files below are the ones that need to be deleted.
You can go directly to a command line (or use the run command)
    del \windows\msicpl.dll /s/f
    del \windows\msicpl.sys /s/f
    del \windows\winsys.exe /s/f (DOT Controller)
The /s and c:\ parts tell the del command to scan subdirectories (starting at the root of drive C) and delete--or try to delete-- files of a given name or type, wherever they might be on the hard drive.  The /f switch attempts to force deletion of read-only files.
Also...did you remove the drivers via the "Add Remove Programs" applet in the "Control Panel?" It should have removed them..
If you did, I need to know if the uninstall is working correctly. If not, then this the second or third time I've seen this but have yet to determine if the user ran the uninstallation as I have described. I have not had this particular problem with the DOT to the best of my recollection. I may need to forward this to my contact to see if they can duplicate the issue.
Please create a signature with full specs and OS info. Edit...I see you already have

  • How can i change custom permissions on a drive?

I have screwed up my permissions on 2 of my external drives,  VERY important info on both.
The disk icons have a small lock in the corner and I cannot read or write to them.
Get info brings up a permissions window that says "Custom"  where the read write should be.
It will not let me change these.  Please help!

Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. At the prompt enter:
    sudo chown root:admin
Put a space after "admin" then drag the Desktop icon of one of the external drives into the Terminal window. Press RETURN. You will be prompted for your admin password. It is not echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again. Enter the following command in the Terminal window:
    killall Finder
    Press RETURN.
If this works OK then repeat for the other drive. If it does not work then download BatChmod and use it to fix the permissions on the external drives.

  • How do i remove camera card from super drive

Accidently dropped sdhd ccamera card into w

Believe it or not this happens quite frequently. Successful techniques have used a folded business card, bent paper clips, even a Shop-Vac. I like the Shop-Vac idea since it is less likely to break anything inside the drive.

  • How can I remove a CD in Combo Drive of Mac Mini?

This is a Mac Mini operating on OS 10.58.  I have a CD in the combo drive, and it apparently has something recorded on it.  I think this CD had started to be burned and I stopped it.  The computer indicates that this CD is not blank.  The result is that it will not eject, even after several attempts using the small eject arrow at the top of the desktop, the use of apple-E, and after repeated efforts with a complete shutdown -- still the disk is stuck in the drive.  I suspect that it's in a loop situation, where it tries to run the CD with not effect, but it also cannot eject it.
I notice a small black square, appearing to be black plastic, at the far right end of the CD/DVD player slot at the top of the Mac Mini.  In the old days there was such a hole into which one could stick a straight wire, like a heavy duty straightened paper clip, and it would physically eject a stuck disk.  Is there such a thing on this Mac Mini?
    Any good suggestions, please!?  Thanks!!
              George

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • How do I remove programmes from the hard drive

Hi This may seem stupid but as a new Mac user I can find no way of deleting an installed photoshop and skype from the hard drive. Can anyone help please?

I do not recommend the "drag and drop" method since there may be artifacts left behind that have been installed into other folders.
Suggest you go to Photoshop and Skype support web site. Carolyn's advice is also good too.
    For Adobe Photoshop:
Use the Uninstaller in Utilities/Adobe Installers.
If that doesn't work, download this, read the instructions very carefully and follow them.

  • Removing custom camera profiles

I am running windows 7.  How do I remove custom camera profiles created by x-rite passport?
    thanks,
    Randy

    Randy,
Be careful deleting profiles, particularly from the OS.  I think the x-rite manager actually hides profiles instead of deleting them which is probably just fine.
Regarding actual deletion, I am not certain so please test this - if the profiles are not being used by any images, deleting should not be a problem.  If some images are using them however and the profiles are deleted, the next time that image renders it won't be able to find the profile and will have to render using an Adobe default color profile.  To compound this problem, there is no easy way to filter by color profile (a couple of plug-ins exist I think) so it becomes difficult to know if it a particular profile is being used.
One way around this, again I believe this is correct but please test for yourself, is that if you use the DNG format for your RAW images, when you update the DNG Preview (instead of Ctrl-S) you embed the color profile into the image and therefor you can delete them.  This can be handy when you have one-time uses for the special color profiles.
