Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

I seem to have duplicates of all my songs after a PC upgrade. How do I remove them from I-tunes folders. The second copy has a 1 appended to the filename.

Best is to resync with iTunes; or if you are not syncing, delete everything from the music app and redownload the tracks you want (Settings App > General > Usage > Manage Storage [under STORAGE] > Music > All Songs [swipe to the left, tap Delete]. This will clear all content from Music.

I am prepared to wipe my iTunes and use Music Rescue to re-populate my iTunes directly from my iPod Classic (7th Gen). If this is my last resort, how do i erase my current iTunes?

How can i erase dublicate songs easily from my iTune library.

I have almost 8000 songs in my iTune and most of them have dublicates. How can i easily erase dublicate songs?

First you want to identify the duplicate songs, to do this you can go to File and from there select Show Duplicates. If you have a way to distinguish ones from the others you should be able to do it quite fast. For example, organize them by Genre, or by Last time played.
If you can't tell them apart this way then you'll have to go about it manually. I *think* there's an app that sorts out your library for you too but I can't remember the name, or where I saw it.

Run iTunes.
While iTunes is running, double click RemoveDeadTracks.js to run the script.
It will remove all the exclamation marked tracks.

Use the iTunes App on ur PC and sync ur device. Browse d music tap on ur device through d PC iTunes then delete the duplicated songs. Make sure u sync again b4 exit. If complicated which I know it won't, get an App expert to resolve

look thru the pull-down menus (i think that is where it is), and click on "Show Duplicates".
you can select and delete at will.
there will be a "Show All" or something that appears at the bottom (i think) after selecting "Show Duplicates" so you can later switch back to regular view.

I have too many songs and albums for my iPhone to be convenient. I can remove an album, but might want to put it back on later. Should be easy but I am probably missing something. The simplest thing may be to back-up and then restore the iPhone. If you don't fancy that then remove all media that is currently synced to it, then double check and manually remove any media that remains on the device, before reselecting your sync options.
If you've been manually managing the device and your library doesn't contain copies of all your media then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

As usual I answer my own questions. I created a Local Software Product based on an .htm file in the Program Files folder that never changes with the version we have. Lame.
