I have a few other prefs in system prefs that i do not need how do i remove them?

In theory.. any prefs you've added should be in the main drive>Library>PreferencePanes
Just delete them, and log out and back in or re-start.

"Other" System Preferences still Grey!

Hi all,
Going back to an issue from way back when... it has returned. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this.
My "Other" system preferences are all greyed out. Since I have admin privileges on my machine, I should have access to all preferences.
Apparently this is a network issue, as my machine is on a network and the IT department can administer the machines remotely. At one time, the IT mac guru told me how to delete a .plist in my Library and the preferences came back under my control.
But! He has left our company, and the remaining IT-ers have no idea what I am talking about.
Does anyone here have an idea of what it could be? Thanks for any help.

Might have been ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. The only "harm" deleting .plist files will do is erase your stored settings. You can move the .plist files out of the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder, and a new one will be created. If that doesn't correct the problem, simply copy the moved .plist file back to the ~/Library/Preferences/ (overwrite the newly-created replacement), and try another relevant .plist file.

Do you mean the System Preferenes application?
If so, you should be able to restore it from your backups.
If you don't have backups:
If your Mac came with Snow Leopard, call AppleCare. They'll send a replacement set of discs for a nominal fee.
If it didn't, you can still get the Retail Snow Leopard discs for $30.
Then get a good external HD (or Time Capsule) and start making regular backups. Hard drives fail; other things go wrong; and laptops get lost or stolen. Without good backups, you risk losing all your data.

IPad synced with PC - how do I remove "settings and preferences" from PC?

Hi all: initially, I synced my iPad with my office PC, but I decided to let my iPhone stay synced to that PC and I'll sync my iPad with my home MacBook Pro. It seems that the apps for the iPhone and iPad are really different. I ended up having to buy all new apps for the iPad as the iPhone apps showed up really small.
Anyway with that said, how do I remove the "settings/preferences" of the iPad on the PC?
Please give directions slowly as I'm really a Mac user and don't know my way too well around a PC.

Although most iPhone apps can be installed and used on an iPad, they are different. They were written to be optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch screen size. After an app is upgraded to be universal which includes being optimized for the iPad's screen size, it will look much better on the iPad. With my apps that have been upgraded to being universal, I do not have two versions in my iTunes library - one optimized for the iPod, and another optimized for the iPhone.

You don't, or can't.
In regards to iTunes content, an iPad can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content including 3rd party apps from an iTunes library on another computer, all iTunes content transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPad first.
You can sync contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on multiple computers. An iPad can have different sync preferences under the various tabs for the iPad sync preferences with iTunes on each computer.

How do I unfreeze my System Preferences?

Hi everyone,
I went to change my wallpaper in System Preferences and now my System Preferences is locked/frozen! I have waited for it to load the images but it still shows the coloured spin wheel and the only way I can close the application is by forcing it to shut by using command + alt option + escape. I have restarted, rebooted and updated the software and no such luck. I only purchase my Macbook Air a month ago so it is fairly new... Can anybody please help??

Because the last thing I did (whilst accessing my system preferences) was attempt to change my wallpaper through iPhoto, everytime I open my system preferences it goes back to the Desktop and Screen Saver page where I last was and I cannot access any of my other System Preferences options. I read in a thread somewhere about disposing of the iPhoto / photobooth app so I might give that a try and see if that fixes my issue...

I was told in the .Mac forum that I could find out in the OS forum how to fix my system preferences so that I can access the .Mac portion and then turn off iDisk Sync'ing or removing. I have tried with no success. Can anyone give me any more detail in how to do this.

How can I fix my system preferences so the system preferences window don't freeze up every time I open it?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix a System Prefrences problem? Every time I try to open system prefrences I get that little color wheel over the System Prefrences window, and I am not able to change any system prefrence options or click on any options in the window. It just freezes up. I have iOS Lion 10.7.4 version on a 2012 Macbook Pro i7. Right now my screen saver is just a blank blue color, and I am unable to set any other photo from my photo library to the hpome screen picture even without going throiugh system prefrnces. I have tried Disk Utility>Verify Disk Permissions, and that did not work. I have also tried Disk Utility>Permissions Repair, and that did not work either. Can anyone tell me another option to try because I am unable to open Time Machine to repair to an earlier date because that window freezes up also. Does anyone know any other options? This Macbook Has been doing this sort of thing since I took it out of the box brand new 4 months ago, but it fixted itself before the Macbook help coverage was expired so I never bothered to call Apple about it. Now it just freezes up and never works, I can't change my system time out I cant change any system prefrences on my Macbook Pro. It really ***** bad. Also another symptom my macbook has right before this problem accours is my screen saver on my computer will automatically be swithched to that Galaxy screen saver all the sudden when I turn my computer on then when I go to change the screen save back to a picture I had on my computer the system prefrences just freeze up. Please let me know if you know what I can do. Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

The utilities was lost in my iMac, and so did safari. Maybe my boy deleted them in mistake, he is interested in finding the secret of iMac since I bought it three months ago. Do I need to reload the OS X 10.4.4 then update to 10.4.9 again?

Your entire Utilities folder and/or its contents was deleted?
If so, I suggest performing an Archive & Install selecting preserve user and network settings. If not and you don't know exactly what your boy deleted (have you checked the Trash?), performing an A&I will take care of everything known or unknown at once.

Now is also a good time to create a backup - preferably a bootable clone backup of your entire hard drive saved to an external firewire drive used for backup purposes only.
And I also suggest creating a computer login account for your boy WITHOUT admin privileges and disable automatic login for your admin account which will require manually entering your log in password for your admin account during a computer startup, restart and with Fast User Switching.
Before stepping away from your Mac or whenever it will be used by anyone that is unattended by you, log out from your account.
Keep the install package for your Mac in a safe place but in a location that is not known by your boy.

How do I stop the System Preferences from freezing on my Macbook Pro?

The System Preferences option on my MacBook Pro keeps freezing. Whenever I click on it is immediately freezes and shoes the rainbow wheel to show it is busy. I am currently running OS X 10.7.2. Can anyone please help?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

How to sync or backup System Preferences

I have an iMac with Yosemite now, but come from a Windows environment. In Windows 8 or higher, there is a profile sync feature included, which syncs every single System Preferences setting (such as keyboard layout, time zone, display settings, sharing settings, sound settings, power settings). It is synced over internet on the cloud (via the Microsoft account), and it means that when getting a new or second or third PC, all settings would be set within seconds or minutes after installing the OS.
I have now spent an hour to set my settings in System Preferences but am getting another Mac soon. How can these settings be replicated without me having to enter them manually. It "seems" that these profile settings are NOT part of iCloud (couldn't find any reference to it) and that you can't simply "back them up". Is this correct? Are there other ways?
When using Time Machine, do these settings get backed up and can they easily be restored to a DIFFERENT Mac, WITHOUT restoring anything else (so no files, documents or apps)?
So we're talking about copying System Preferences from one Mac to a different Mac (not on the same Mac).

From your post I understand that when you have a new Mac, you just want to transfer over your computer settings from your previous Mac. You can accomplish this by backing up your original Mac with Time Machine, and then using Migration Assistant to restore just your computer settings to your new Mac. How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1.          In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b.          or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3.          In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4.          On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5.          Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
          20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6.          Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7.          In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8.          If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears,authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9.          In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10.          If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11.          Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12.          In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes:          Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone
Update .....
Default selection
Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

Removing audio system preferences?

I used to have a digidesign audio interface - but changed it. However after removing Pro-Tools/digidesign software from my mac - I still have the mbox audio interface as an option in my imac audio in/out system preferences.
Is there anyway I can remove this from the audio system preferences somewhere (in user library?) - as it doesn't exist for me now?!

If the app came with an uninstaller, then it's gone now since you already got rid of it.
Have you tried my previous suggestion?

You can even delete files directly from Spotlight.
Or you can manually go into the Preferences Folder to see if you can find any .plist files that has the same and/or similar name as the app you are looking for. Crossing your fingers that the app did not place scragglers in any other place on your system as 3rd party apps sometimes do.
