How do I remove Snow Leopard and reinstall Panther?

How do I remove Snow Leopard 10.6.2 from my G5 and reinstall Panther 10.3? My G5 only came with 10.3 CD and I can't start up from that. I would like to eventually get to 10.5 Leopard but don't have a CD/DVD of that either. Is there somewhere I can download the software?
I use Adobe CS3 designer software for my business. It's been crashing since I updated to Snow Leopard. I thought I could go back down in OS's but for some reason I can't start up from the 10.3 CD.
Any idea's are much appreciated.

First, You will need your original Panther install DVD to return to Panther. Before doing so, I would make a bootable clone of my Sno boot volume on an external drive for purposes of backup, possible migration, and fail-safe--even if you have a TM backup. Your only probably trouble-free way of returning to Panther is erase and install. Before you do so, check the compatibility of your hardware and software; check [here|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/forum:start] and [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258].
Given that you have dealt with any compatibility issues, your only problem should be migrating from your clone in a way that avoids your Sno problems. In this regard, you generally can drag and drop you data files from Sno without issue (see links below--use Preferential Treatment before migrating anything and the by-hand migration guide to accomplish your migration). I would reinstall my apps by hand. I would not migrate your users or settings. The remaining issue is dealing with the remaining contents of your user folder(s).
I would acquire [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] and use this app to fix the your user preferences--the items in your User/Library/Preferences folder(s). After doing so, use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to do the actual migration of the items in your user folder(s).
After reinstalling Panther, you will need to install Leopard. But note that upgrade disk to Leopard are difficult to find and, especially, at a reasonable price. You may need to buy a box set.
If you decide to make the move, then, in your case, I suggest that you do an upgrade install. If you do an upgrade, then, after installing, all you file, setting, users, and apps will be in their proper places, except for incompatible apps which will be archived in the Incompatible Applications folder. Upgrading is a very sound method.
I would not upgrade to Leo using any method unless, again, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume (this time a Panther clone) on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to Leopard that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough.
If you do not like Leopard or get a bad install, then you can restore your internal back to Panther using the clone, and nothing will be lost. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. In both cases, you can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you like the idea of cloning for a backup, etc., then I would acquire one of the last two mentioned programs.

  • Need help removing Snow Leopard and Installing Leopard

Snow Leopard was a waste of time and money. Time I could have used for much more productive work.
How can I remove snow leopard and reinstall leopard. I have the installation disc for Leopard. Can I simply install it over the top of snow leopard?
That would solve my problem for one machine (the iMac) but how do I go back to leopard if I don't have the disk? I suppose there is dmg somewhere but I haven't looked so I apologize in advance if the answer is obvious.

    Insert leopard install disk-select install.
It will wipe the drive and install Leopard-all data will be gone.
You must have a legitimate, legal copy of leopard.
If you backed up the leopard dvd, you would have to burn it or figure a way to do a network install.

If you have Leopard installed, you can't download anything to get to Snow Leopard.
In order to do that you must have a Snow Leopard DVD.

  • Uninstall Snow Leopard and reinstall Leopard

Any advice on how to uninstall Snow Leopard and reinstall Leopard. My Epson 3800 Printer just wont work with Snow Leopard. Thanks

    Hello Anthony:
There is no "uninstall." If you have a backup (hopefully you do) made before you moved to OS X 10.6, restore that.
If you do not, this article gives you the options:

  • How can I remove Snow leopard from my Mac, it crash all important programs

Please tell me how I can remove Snow Leopard from my machine & revert back to Leopard 10.5.8
Since I loaded Snow leopard, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark & Mail all quit over & over again. I never had ANY of these issues before loading snow leopard. I rely daily on the programs I listed. I am not saying once in a while, but constantly; opening the programs, exporting, placing graphics, emailing, you name it, it quits the program I am in. I keep sending apple the crash reports, but I am afraid I have reached my end. (Apple must have a folder fu;l of crashes with my email address in it by now.)
To maintain my sanity PLEASE tell me there is a way to do this without risking loosing any of my data.
I do have time machine hooked up.
Please be a life saver (sanity saver) and tell me how to get Snow Leopard off my machine!!!!!

    First, Welcome to the Discussions,
Second, there is no way to successfully degrade an OS to a previous version. You would have to install anew a previous OS, thereby erasing all your data. Then you would take that version up as far as you want to go.
Of course if you've been using Time Machine you can recover to the prior system and retain your files using that.
Best of all would be to have a firewire external drive and use an app like this to make a clone on. No worries then if one wants to go back before any major changes very precisely.

How do I uninstall snow leopard and re-install OSX leopard?

Sorry to hear that, Snow Leopard runs as fast or faster than either Tiger and Leopard did on my Jan 2006 Early Intel iMac on 2GB of RAM?
Before you blame Snow Leopard, run the Extended Apple Hardware Test and check the SMART status of your Hard Drive to make sure that you do not have another problem.

First, your Mac model must be able to run Leopard. Second, you would have to partition your hard drive to create a second volume then install Leopard on the new volume using a Leopard installer DVD.

  • Removing Snow Leopard and Installing only Windows on Mini

I've owned my Mac Mini now for about a month; it was my first immersion into OS X and, quite frankly, I do not like it. I do like the physical form of the mini and figured I would just delete Snow Leopard and install Windows 7 (preferably 64 bit) on it.
Can this be done? I don't want to use boot camp and lose all my partitions. I want it to be a Windows only machine.
    Thanks for your time.

David is right. you need boot camp in order to install winsloth on a Mac.
one way to go about that would be to install Mac OS X on an external drive, boot from there and use boot camp assistant to create one big partition on the Mac's startup disk for the winsloth installation.
on the Mac side, use system preferences > startup disk to select which system is used to start up.
nevertheless, i would @ least browse the boot camp forum for user tips on how to best achieve what you want.
    good luck !

  • How to uninstall / Remove Snow Leopard?

How can I get rid of Snow Leopard and go back to Leopard?
Can I just install Leopard over the top or will it have to be a clean install to a blank HDD?

Ok, Thanks Barry, My data is safe so that is ok, I use a Scheduled Chronosync every night to a NAS box in the attic. So anything else although a lot of work agro, will not be a data loss issue.
Thanks donv. I had seen the Startup disk option in Sys Prefs, but was not sure if it was a 'once only' change or was a permanent Startup disk selection.
RC-R....I' did not elaborate further as it was not strictly related to what i was asking, but here are the answers/reasons.

Could you explain more about this? What do you mean by the trash can not emptying "properly"?
What I mean is that although the trash icon showed empty and with Hidden files and folders set to 'Show' in Finder, nothing appeared in the Trash Can or in the .trashes folder in Finder. BUT JDiskReport showed the trash can as having something like 300GB that could not be deleted. ( a duplicate iTunes folder i created before doing some major pruning of music stored in iTunes) Even using ls with various options from the Terminal failed to show the stuck folder in the Trash. See my post about this that no one could help me with:

Where were you seeing Time Machine report that each backup was 500 GB? If you were just looking at the size of the dated >Time Machine backup folders via Finder or Terminal, you were not seeing an accurate indication of backup size: while it >appears that each dated backup contains a copy of every file relevant to that date, there is actually only one version of each >unique file on the Time Machine drive.
What I was seeing was Time machine reporting not being able to complete another backup, as there was not enough space left on the drive. I clicked on the TM icon in the dock, and saw that instead of having backups going back many months, I only had one backup from the previous hour. If I looked at the TM drive in Finder, it showed just the one dated backup subfolder within the backup.backupdb folder and that was over 700GB
I understand how TM does its backups using 'hardlinks' . I use a similar system on my FreeNAS backup box using a script and rsync to create a rotating 'snapshot' style backup up of the old Dell PC. So yes , if you looked at the size of each individual backup and added them all together, then you would have backups totalling a figure much greater than would be possible to fit on the drive
For the first few months Time Machine was fine until the drive started getting full and every hour or so when TM did a backup it was asking me about deleting older backups. So I turned off the 'Notify after old backups are deleted' option.
Each individual backup had got so big with the stuck folder in .Trashes that all previous backups had been deleted.
Now, I thought .trashes folders were automatically excluded from TM backups, but it seems in this case that they were somehow being included, and the deleted iTunes library folder was somehow stuck in there and being backed up.
How specifically have you moved & linked your user home folder to a non-startup drive? This may be part of your problem.
I will start from the beginning.
When I first got the machine I had 4 HDD's ( set up as Boot 500gb, Video Scratch1Tb, Video import1TB and Time machine1TB).
With the way iPhoto/iTunes etc imports data into their own packages (OK I know that can be stopped and use linked libraries) my Users folders on the boot drive started to outgrow the drive. I use ALAC (lossless format ) for my music, and have a lot 20,00+ photos. A 500 Gb drive with about 350-400 gb user data plus system.
So I copied the User folders to one of the bigger drives. Then linked to it using Sys Preferences, CMD Click User/Advanced options/Home Directory/Choose.
On any Ubuntu machines I have setup, putting the home folder on a separate drive has not caused me problems, so I possibly naively assumed this would also be the case on here also. On Windows machine I alway sset up the My Documents folders on a independent drive, but then the My Docs folder does no contain "system' data in the same way that a users home folder does, so that is a lot less troublesome.
Am thinking of upgrading the drives in this box soon, just waiting on the prices of the 2TB WD Caviar Blacks to drop a bit. I can then move the 3 1TB drives out of this machine into my FreeNAS backup box.
I think I have covered all your points there, any suggestions appreciated
    Neil

  • I wiped my Mac desktop partition while using BootCamp. I want to just start over but how do i download snow leopard and start again?

I accidentally wiped my mac OS partition while trying to expand the memory on BootCamp windows to play games. I did this through dropping memory on the mac then trying to merge the unallocated memory with windows 7. I'm now left with windows 7 and next to no memory, i dont have any data i care about backing up as i've only just got this mac (i bought it off a friend and they can't find the installation CD)  So i just want to start over but how can i do this?

You'll need to find the disks, or buy new ones. Snow Leopard only comes on DVD.
Call the Apple store and purchase SL for $29 while they still have some in stock. Prices have skyrocketed for SL retail disks. Going anywhere from $85 to $125. While you have Apple on the phone, make sure to have your Mac's serial number handy. This is important because the last retail release of SL was 10.6.3. If the Mac you now own came with 10.6.4 or later, it will not be able to use the retail disk.
If that's the case, then you can use the serial number to get the correct replacement gray disks the Mac came with. It's not expensive to get them and would be good to have anyway since the retail disks do not include the bundled software such as iLife, Garage Band and a bunch of others.

  • How to remove Snow Leopard (or any OSX system) from a volume

    Hi,
when I installed Lion I cloned my Snow Leopard system on another volume, in case I would encounter problems. Since then this second but unused system resides on that volume, beside other files.
How can I remove Snow Leopard without erasing all of the files. Does deleting the OSX folder Users, Library, System, Applications and so on do the trick? Are there any invisible folders ? Is there an app, that can do it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Philipp

Click on the spotlight logo in the top right, search disk utilitys, select the 10.6 partition then erase it

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.
