How do I remove (unknown) user in permissions & sharing, please?

I re-installed OS X with archive install.  I am reinstalling preferences, etc... using Time Machine and my archived Previous System folder.  However, many folders are marked and I have an (unknown) user with Read&Write Priveleges in Sharing & Permissions for files within 'Previous System' folders.  I am unable to remove (unknown) with - and I have no option for setting 'No Access' to this user.
How do I remove (unknown) user with Read&Write Priveleges in Permissions?
Using Terminal,  I have ascertained that my uid=501
Macintosh:~ symone$ ls -ladeO /Previous\ Systems.localized/Previous\ System\ 1/Users/symone/Library/Audio
drwx------+ 5 502  staff  - 170  8 Sep  2011 /Previous Systems.localized/Previous System 1/Users/symone/Library/Audio

Hmmm, doesn't sound good for your drive.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

    Hello Smile_333
The article below will assist with finding things and help increase the hard drive space for your computer. The best way is to have an external hard drive to copy things to if you do not want to delete and loose things.

  • Unknown user in permissions

Why do the permissions for my Public Folder include an 'unknown' user?  I cannot delete or change the permissions for this user.

I've reviewed some of the other threads.  Seems like this problem doesn't 'have' to be fixed.  I had never noticed it before, because I was never using the "public" folder and the 'drop box' feature.  I got concerned mainly because when I did open this folder for the first time, I discovered a file (jpg) that was not mine and rather creepy. I thought perhaps the 'unknown' user was part of the problem (hacker), but since the folder had open access for the 'everyone' group as well that's probably how the file was put on my computer.

  • HT204266 how do I remove a user from app store

The app store will not allow me to update my apps without updating a user that was the previous owner of the laptop. How do I remove this person from the computer etc.

If you mean an iTunes store id then Settings > Store - touch the id on the right and select sign-out from the popup. You can also do it via the bottom of the Feature tab in the App Store app. If you have any apps on the iPad that were downloaded/installed via that id then you may want to delete them - if updates for them ever appear in the App Store then you will only be able to update them via the id that was used to buy them (apps are linked to the account id, not to the device that they are on)

  • Cannot remove Unknown User

Hi just noticed in (OS X Mountain Lion) System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing: I have a 'Unknown User' and too 2 'Unknown User' in the Remote Login.
See screen shots... got any ideas? (note clicking "–" does not remove the "Unknown User" they are stuck, hence my posting)
    thanks

I had the same problem and i solved it (for Remote Login)
    1) First remove all users that can be remove from GUI
    2) shows the configuration of users
    sudo dscl  . -read /Groups/com.apple.access_ssh
    example result:
    AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default
    GeneratedUID: 2F60778C-0931-47A4-B656-DBE07ACD843F

    GroupMembership: youraccoutname
    PrimaryGroupID: 404
    RealName:
    Remote Login ACL
    RecordName: com.apple.access_ssh
    RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups
    3) remove the group GroupMembers that the user is unknown
    sudo dscl  . delete /Groups/com.apple.access_ssh GroupMembers 3D7C31B1-DEDE-4A5A-AAA8-CDD55645DC75
    4) Go to System preference (dock) and see the result

  • How do I remove my User ID from the App Store?

I am planning to sell or give my Mac to someone soon. I removed my user account and created a brand new admin account for the machine. When I logged into it to set it up, the App Store promoted me to update some programs. Much to my surprise, it still shows my Apple ID (my email address) in the login screen, though I am not logged in.
Is there any way to get rid of this?

The only secure way to prepare a Mac for a second hand user is to completely erase the HDD and reinstall OS X. You can do this with the original Install DVD that came with your Mac. First use the DIsk Utility on the DVD to erase the HDD, then use the installer to place a fresh version of OS X on the drive. Then switch the Mac off without setting up a user account and the new owner can do so, BTW, you are also obliged to pass the Install DVD on with the Mac to its new owner.

  • How do I remove a user? ( the name is greyed out and has a check next to it )

I cannot remove a user ( my wife ) from my Macbook. I go to Sys. Pref, Accounts, and unlock the lock ( I'm the Admin ). I'm able to click on and highlight the guest account but that's not what I want to delete. My wife's user name is greyed out and it has a check mark by it. I'm unable to highlight it so that I can remove it. There's gotta be a simple fix, right? Please help. Thanks,  Michael K.

  • How do I remove all user changes in a computer program?

I am doing a favor for a teacher friend of mine. She works at a small career school. There are 18 computers all running Practice Partner and MediSoft.
These programs are very large. They have been uninstalling and re installing them every 9 weeks when they have a new class so they can erase all the changes the previous class made. These programs are used in Electronic Health Records in doctor's offices.
Once you create a "patient" in the software, there seems to be no way to remove these changes without installing the respective programs fresh. I tried to install the program, create a restore point, make changes, then use the restore point. The
changes I made, the "patient" I created, is still there. I have tried to change the program information in the registry files, that does not seem to work either. Is there a way to do like a ":factory reset" to remove this data? Thank you
    for your help!

    Hi,
You could use APp-V for these applications, then you can reset them and remove all user modifications without reinstalling them..

  • How do I remove iTunes user computers

I locked my phone in for backup and it shows that my iTunes has 5 computers / registrations, but I only have one.  Although I just replaced my old MacBook with a new one.  How do I remove the old MacBook from my ID so it doesn't show the history?

If you've got 5 computers authorised for the account in question, and you need to free up authorizations, I'd do a "Deauthorize All" from one of the computers you have access to, and then reauthorize the computers you have access to.
For instructions, see the following document:

  • How do I remove a user on Lion

I'm having some trouble removing a standed user on Lion.  I'm loged in as an admin and I go to the user prefrences, I select the user and click the - Button and click OK to remove the user.  However the user is still there even after immidiatly restarting.  Are there any other ideas I could try?

Like you, I'm unable to find any references on the net to this particular error message. I was able to find a link which involved using the "Directory Utility" application located in /System/Library/CoreServices. I've never used this utility myself. Try the other recommendations on the page first (i.e. try creating a user to see if that unlocks the problem). If all else fails try the "Directory Utility" fix. - Good luck

It depends upon what app that the file/document is in and what it supports, different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via your wifi network, emailing to yourself, dropbox etc.
