How do I rename multiple files at same time?

I'm new to mac...after 20 years of PC I've decided to join Mac, but I'm having trouble with something that was pretty easy on Windows.
When I upload photos (or any kind of files) to my Mac, and I want all of the files to have the same name (with sequence number to indentify), how should I do?
For example, I want to rename my vacation pictures to vacation1, vacation2 etcc..but of course I don't want to do one-by one...
regards

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Automator.
First select Library > Get Specified Finder Items.
Then choose Action > Rename Finder Items.
This will rename all the selected files to vacation-nn.jpg etc.
By clicking the "Media" button at the top you can darg and drop media from iPhoto etc into the Finder items list.
Hope that helps.

How can I convert multiple files at one time and not one at a time

    Hi Plissey1950,
Sorry for the lengthy delay to a response.  Are you trying to convert multiple files to individual PDF files at the same time? (not combine them).  If so, you'll need to use Adobe Acrobat for this function. The CreatePDF service does not have the ability to convert multiple files to multiple individual PDF files.
    Thanks,

This would be an excellent use of Automator. Here is a link to some instructions on how to do this using Automator.

You can do it with Automator.
    http://www.automator.us/examples-01.html
Or with a utilities like these:

You can also do it using the Terminal command line.

  • How to check-in multiple files with same name having different revision num

    Hi
Can anyone please tell me, how to check-in multiple files with the same name with different revision number using RIDC API.
    For eg:
First I will check-in a file(TestFile.txt) into a content server with revision number 1 using RIDC API in ADF application. Then after some time, will modify the same file(TestFile.txt) and check-in again. I tried to check-in same file multiple times, however first time its checking-in correctly into server showing revision as 1, while checking-in same file again, its not giving any errror message, and also its not reflecting in server. Only one file(TestFile.txt) is reflecting in server.
How to implement this functinality using RIDC API? Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Regards

    Hi Srinath
Thanks for your response. Its not cloning, its like check-in file first, then check-out the file and do some editing and then again upload the same file with different revision number using RIDC. I got the solution now.

  • How can I rename multiple files simultaneously

I'm new to Macs and I'm looking for a way to rename multiple files simultaneously. These are photos from my SD card that I wish to give the same name but increment the name by 1 at the end of the filename.

A Better Finder Rename is perfect for this.   I use it all the time to rename image files.
There is also a companion app called A Better Finder Attributes that is also useful for image files.

  • How can I delete multiple files at a time from "Finder"

I can't possible delete the thousands of junk files that showed up in Finder once I downloaded Maverick.  I can't delete more than one at a time now.  Why won't the highlighting stay in place on more than one file that I want to delete?

How are you trying to select multiple files?
What makes you think that "thousands of junk files [...] showed up in Finder once I downloaded Maverick" (or even installed it)?

  • How do I "check" multiple songs at same time?

I'm trying to backup my itunes library to DVD, but itunes will only burn songs from a playlist if the box is checked. I have 900+ songs that are unchecked that I need to backup. I realize I can just re-import them from the original CD, but then I will also have to rate the songs all over again.
    A. How do I check multiple songs, or...
    B. Is there another way to backup the ratings data for each song?

Highlight all the songs that you want, you could hit command+A to select them all.
Then right click, or control+click and choose "Check Selections"
    "D"

  • How do I locate multiple files at one time?

I've moved a few songs around in my computer's files, and each time I'd go back to locate the files, it asked me if I would like to locate the original files for other songs. Today I tried to do the exact same thing, but it doesn't give me the same option anymore. Now, if I want to locate any of the songs currently missing, I have to do it manually one by one. Is there any way I can get the option back?

Select one, and then either command-click another, or in list/column view, Shift-click the item at the other end of the range you want to select. Alternatively, click on a spot in the screen and drag the cursor until all the files are selected.

  • How do i rename multiple files at once?

i have quite a few file groupings that i would like to rename without having to click on each one individually. I would like to either rename them serially (ie: tree a, tree b, ..., tree x) or just tack on a name to the beginning of each file name (ie: oak, spruce would become: tree - oak, tree - spruce). How about on the end (ie: oak tree, spruce tree)? Is there any way to do this?!?!
On a similar but slightly different subject, is there any way to stick a bunch of tags on files? I have a huge photo library of architecture projects that i would like to be able to categorize for cross referencing. I started to work in iphoto but it seems like it is not the right interface for what i am trying to do.

Ah, I have Renamer4Mac-2.8.2.zip which was free. I see it has changed ownership or management and is now shareware (and a pretty hefty price IMHO). It's possible that the [older versions|http://renamer4mac.com/download/all-versions.html] are still free.
I also have psrenamer which I think is also free. Not as polished as the other but since i only use it once every couple of months it works fine for me.

  • How can I rename multiple files without Automator?

Is there a way to rename a large number of files i.e. "file, file(2) file(3)" without using Automator? In Windows you can just right-click and rename any number of selected files.

Oh, I heartily agree. I bought it back at version 1.0, but not everyone around here is willing to spend money. The one I suggested that's freeware is a pretty good tool especially for casual sorts of needs. You may want to take a look at it. Not that it replaces ABFR.

  • How can i update multiple records at same time in psa

    Hi,
i need to modify certain column's value in psa. for one of InfoObject  fix value i need to change to some other value, can i write some routine or any other way to do so quickly.
    thnx

If you are in prod, its tough to write code to manipulate PSAs. First of all, you need to transport your Program. Also, if you make a mistake, you can potentially change other PSAs.
If you insist, get the name of the PSA. Go to RSA1, PSA tab. THere, right click on your infosource and select Delete PSA. DON'T DELETE anything in this screen. Just copy the Table name (look around, you will find it there). Now, go to SE16 and lok at the table contennts. If you give Req, data pack, etc, you can access multiple records. Now, write the program "carefully"  to access and change records in this table.
There is another way, but this will work-out for you.

How do I select multiple files under "Get File Info"and lock or unlock them all? It seems to do it automatically when I have 10 or more selected. But how do I lock or unlock 5 or 6 files in one swoop? Thanks

Select the desired files then press OPTION and select Show Inspector from the Finder's File menu.

  • How to tell if multiple files are selected when they are opened in windows

Hello, can someone help me, my question is how to tell if multiple file selections were made when they were opened (right-click->open). Through modifying the registry I already have my Java program start up when a file with specific extension is double-clicked.
The problem is when multiple files are opened at the same time, an instance of java program is created and run for each of the selected files. Ideally I would like it so that only one instance of java program is run, regardless of the number of selections.
When you try it with Microsoft media player or winamp for example, it seems that only one process is created and run (I don't see many processes spawning when I watch it using task manager). Maybe this is more of Windows issue rather than Java programming issue. Any help is appreciated.

If anybody wants to know, this can be solved by either 1) using DDE 2) using DropTarget (from Windows) 3) make a light-weight EXE dispatcher (eg. in C), and use file to have IPC between the dispatcher (which gets the filepath for each of the selections) and the java program. There can be other methods of course. Using the second option is the simplest but it requires WinXP and higher. I implemented it using option 3.. the downside of this is there's a warning message pop up when trying to open many (>20?) files at the same time by Windows. However, option 1 'seems' to have the same limitation. Having a java program created each time for each of the selections seems to be too slow, for viable option.
