How do i rename multiple files at the same time on a MAC?

I have been a mac user since 4 years now yet i cannot figure out how to rename multiple files in mac. In Pc i used to slect all and rename one e:g "ab.jpg" and the restwould be "ab (1).jpg" automatically. but in the mac its way too hard to do this on the automator. ..
please advise asap!

I have a bunch of PDF files (2 thousand at least) that I need to transfer to another Mac but since it's running OS 9.2 it won't accept the files because the names are too long, therefore, I need a quick way to change all such files into a shorter name but maintaining some of the serial numbers each file name has (i.e., not changing all to the same name but just taking off the first or last 5 characters for example), is there a way to do this sort of thing with OS 10.3.9 or 10.5.2?

Look at this shareware. http://www.jonn8.com/ntf/ It's a batch renaming app, but I'm not sure it will do exactly what you want. However, it does have a 7 day free trial.
If you do a Google serach using +batch file rename mac+ you can review a lot more apps.

Shift-click the photos or Ctrl-click them to select them, then right-click one of them and choose Delete from Catalog. They will all go together.

It seems pretty trivial to implement a file upload item, but is there some way to allow selection (upload) of multiple files at the same time? Seems like this has probably come up before, but I didn't find much for solutions in my search. Any links or insight would be appreciated.

@Manish - That does allow for multiple file uploads without refreshing the page, but does not allow for multiple file uploads at the same time.
@Tony - That might be the way I end up going, although I probably should have been more specific. It would be really nice it there was a way to do a mutli-file select using the control or shift button like you can with a standard file selection dialog (if you want to copy multiple files, for example). Having a separate line for each file browser means there has to be a limit on the number that can be selected at the same time.
Has anyone implemented a method of selecting multiple files at once, and hitting an upload button once to get them into the database?

You can select multiple adjacent files or folders by clicking on the first one then shift-click on the last one. Multiple non-adjacent files or folders can be selected one at a time by command clicking on each one. Click on any selected file or folder then drag/drop to trash.

How can I unlock numerous files at the same time (i.e. photos) so I can make changes (rotate etc)?

Im using Lion on a MacBook Pro 15in (just under two years old) and I would like to know if I can lock numerous photo files at the same time so I can make changes to them. At the moment when I select an entire folder to go through and make changes, ie rotate in Preview, I am told with each photo that I have to unlock it. I am going through photos I took of archival material and have nearly 5000 photos to adjust and make changes to. This small step is taking up a lot of time.
I realise there will probably be a common 'sense' answer to this but it alludes me at the moment so any help would be appreciated.

How do i delete multiple files of the same video in the "all videos" folder?

i am running out of space on my computer so i went to the "all movies" folder to see if there were items there i could get rid of. when i went i discovered that there were many instances of the same video being there as many as 4 or 5 times. why is that? i tried to delete them but they still remain. how can i single it down to just one file?

One solution to this is to look at each integer and then decide which file to OPEN and to write to. But this will result in a waste of time spent on opening and closing files repeatedly.
So I am considering if we can OPEN all those files in the beginning, and then look at each integer to decide to which file to write to. Once all integers have been gone through, CLOSE all files.
But I am not so sure if this will lead to more memory use, whether or not all the file content will be loaded into RAM as the file is OPEN.
Also, can anybody give me some idea how I can implement this.

......A bit can only be 0 or 1. If you want to interpret the low order as the file number, you'll need to rethink it:
0000 --> 0
0001 --> 1
0010 --> 2
0011 --> 3

Is there a way to configure iTunes so that I can make changes in multiple sections, and only sync or apply them when I've made all of them?
For example: I want to changes setting in Music, Apps, and Books. Today, it seems like I have to go to change settings,hit apply, and wait for the iTunes to sync for each one. What I want to do it make changes in all of them, then hit apply/sync and wait for the iTunes to sync all my changes in one swoop.
The seems very intuitive and saves the user a lot of time. Can iTunes be configured to due this?

For the media, one can;
untick songs in the Library in order for them to be removed at the next Sync (and obviously the reverse to put them back on),
the same procedure for books,
create and modify Playlists,
remove or add photos to the chosen Photos folder (in Windows of course, not in iTunes) which then get removed or added at the next Sync,
and then connect the iPod. One can prevent an iPod from Syncing at initial connection time, so that further changes to things such as which Apps to Sync (which does need to iPod to be connected), choices of Selected Playlists only, etc. (ditto) can be made by choosing the appropriate pane. As yet, whenever I've done this, I have never had to Sync one change before switching to a different pane. The first change causes the Apply and Revert buttons to appear. I ignore them and continue to make further changes on the other panes. Then I select Apply. The Apply/Revert buttons are removed and replaced by a Sync button. So, although there is the Apply, then Sync to be done, it can hardly be described as a burden.
Are you saying Chris, that you have to apply one change at a time, followed by a sync before making any other change?

I can highlight them, but it doesn't check them.

You have to go to each app that you want to select and select the app. There is no option to highlight/select multiple apps at once to check the highlighted/selected apps to be checked for transfer to your iPhone. By the time you go though and select each app followed by making another selection to check each app, you would already have each app checked.

If I guess correctly, you are trying to print thru a printer icon installed on the Desktop.
At last on my machine, iWork applications aren't compatible with this scheme.

Can I export multiple files at the same time in Premiere CS5.5?

I have 10 hours of total video. I need to cut them up into small <5 minutes clips to play on a clients website. Rather than exporting one clip at a time, i'd like to do them all at once and save them as individual files.. it that possible? I thought now, as each small file would need it's own file name.

You can do a batch export by sending them to Adobe Media Encoder with the Queue button in the export settings dialog.
However, you will have to set up each export one at a time.
