How do I rename my computer?

I just got a MacBook Pro at an Apple store, and when setting it up tonight, I noticed that Setup Assistant did not appear as it was supposed to. I then noticed that my computer had already been named (I guess by the people at the store?) - my father's last name, not mine, and not what I want my computer to be called.
I changed the administrator preferences and name, but I cannot figure out how to change the name of the computer itself. Thank you for your help!

Oh, how simple! Thank you! But I noticed it still says the wrong thing next to the 'home' icon under Places; how do I change it there, too?

  • How can I rename my computer?

I just got a new (used) G4 Dual-450 (Gigabit Ethernet) ((Man, I just love these machines!)).
This machine has Tiger pre-installed, and came without the install disks. I'm not sweating this, I'll get Leopard soon enough.
The problem is that the computer came pre-named with an awkwardly long name. I don't much like looking at it on the login screen and it is a Real Pain as the command prompt in the Terminal display.
How can I change the name of my new system to something like "Leo's Computer"?

Gee, I'm surprised it was so easy!
I guess I shouldn't be, this IS a Mac, after all....
    Thanks!

    Quit iPhoto.
Select the Library in the Finder, click the name,  and edit the name like for any file.

Gotcha, sorry, I'm guessing you are referring to Windows Autoplay.  This should do it:
Type regedit into your search bar and bring up Registry editor. Go to the the very top with My Computer. Now go to Edit and Find. Type in the whole offending name that is bugging you, i.e. Soandso's iPhone and hit find. After it searches your registry and finds the first name select it and Edit the Name. I copy/pasted it for all the next steps. After you have found the first name don't stop there. Use F3 to find next Name in registry and So on and so fourth until you have replaced every offending name in your whole registry with the Name you want to show up i.e. Tom's iPhone or whatever? Repeat all of these steps if you have more than one name showing up in your devices? Worked 100% for me. Close regedit and reboot (very important for changes.) Plug your iPhone back in and enjoy all your names back to normal.

  • How do I rename a photo in the iphoto folder?

OK, so I know that you can change the name of a photo while in iphoto by simply pressing the "i" button at the bottom left, but that doesn't change the actual name of the file.
And I know that I can do that by going to Share-Export-Use Title and then put it in the same file that the original picture is in.
My question is....if you do that, then you have two of the same pictures in the same folder (one with the name you gave it and one with a name the computer gave it...some IMG_0812.JPG name), so after I've done this, can I delete the original picture with the numbered name so that I only have the picture with the name I gave it to reduce clutter?
Anyone? Anyone? I ask this question because I'm an organized freak and hate when I need to go and attach a photo I need to know when I took the photo (the month and date) and then all I see are numbers for the names.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How do I rename a photo in the iphoto folder?
    You don't.
And I know that I can do that by going to Share-Export-Use Title and then put it in the same file that the original picture is in.
That depends on how you "put" the renamed export into the "same file." You can Import it into your iPhoto library. If you use the Finder or a Save dialog to save directly into the iPhoto Library folder then this photo will not be recognized by the database.
...can I delete the original picture with the numbered name so that I only have the picture with the name I gave it to reduce clutter?
If you imported the renamed Export properly, and now see both versions of the photo in the library (within the iPhoto application), then yes, you can place the first version in the iPhoto Trash, then Empty iPhoto Trash. Absolutely do not do any of this from within the Finder.
I'm an organized freak and hate when I need to go and attach a photo I need to know when I took the photo (the month and date) and then all I see are numbers for the names.
Don't root around inside the iPhoto Library folder to find your photos for attachments or uploading.
Why: iPhoto is a database application, not a file browser. You aren't supposed to go inside the iPhoto Library folder at all. See this from the iPhoto Help, under "About using the iPhoto Library":
"IMPORTANT: There is also an "iPhoto Library" folder located in the Pictures folder in your home folder, outside the iPhoto application. If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application.
"The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative."
To access your photos, use iPhoto. They are perfectly organized and easy to find, with all of iPhoto's tools at your service. No need to remember the date you took the picture. When you need to upload or attach your photos, select them in iPhoto and do a Share > Export to a Desktop folder. Attach or upload from that folder, then trash it when you are finished.
If you absolutely want to rename your photos it's best to do this before importing into iPhoto. You can use Image Capture (look in your Applications folder) to upload from your camera to a Desktop folder. Use the Finder to preview and rename the files to your liking. Name the folder the way you want the Film Roll to be named in iPhoto. Import the folder into iPhoto, and then delete the one on your Desktop.
But do learn to keep out of the iPhoto Library folder when you are in the Finder. Tampering inside that folder causes much of the damage that I see people coming here to try to repair. Once your photos are inside the iPhoto library, it's best to use iPhoto to do what you want with them.
    Regards.

  • How do I share a computer account with a network account?

So I've had my Macbook for about two years now, and up until now the only account I've had is the one I initially set up for myself. This year for school I had to set up my computer so that I could log into it via a network account. This required me to rename the computer, install an approved school antivirus (kinda unnecessary on a Mac, but whatever), and then set up a new account on my computer, which when connected to the college network, I would be able to log in to. So my problem is that even though I set up that new account as an administrator account, I cannot access any of the files on my original account. So when, for example, I want to run Parallels because the college's printer drivers are not Mac compatible and I want to be able to run the Virtual Machine I already have set up on my other account so that I can install them... It doesn't have access to that virtual machine. I can't find my original Window's OS disk, so I would much rather just port over the Virtual Machine I already have than to buy it again. Does anyone know how to access my original account from a network account?

There are instructions for setting up home sharing on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620

How do I rename the totle and the Author in iBooks ?

LOL!  As you've explained it, the reason this community is called iBook for Macs is because you can easily change PDF titles on a Mac…
I know that people like to be gatekeepers--and I know that people can post in the wrong places--but that's not what happened here.  I was correcting the previous comment about iBooks on the iPads!  (See earlier post above.)
"iBooks.app  on iPads or Maversick is a "viewing" app ie it allows you to open books etc,. on the device its  used on.  Its "read only" in computing terms.. you cannot change anything."
I wanted to do it by not directly pointing out the person's error, but you've forced my hand!
By the way, I ended up at this thread inadvertently while looking for how to change book titles in iBooks under iOS.  So, in case anyone else ends up here looking for how to change PDF titles on their iPads, they'll know it can be done and how!
    Happy Labor Day, everyone!

  • How do I delete multiple computer names on iMac?

During the process of setting up my new MacBookPro and transferring data from my iMac desktop I was instructed to select another name for my computer.  Accordingly, I seem to have these multiple names I would really like to delete.  How can I do this and go back to my original computer name??

The answer above by Kappy is a ridiculous answer; it doesn't even address the problem with the new OS Yosemite, and it solves nothing. I don't mean to be disrespectful to Kappy, but Is Apple aware of this problem? According to the answer above, NO, as the real question was completely ignored. Or even Apple hasn't figured out a work around so even the "super users" cannot help with reasonable and reliable suggestions.  What are we supposed to do in meantime until Apple figures out that this is a problem? I've investigated multiple resources and all I am seeing is the same thing; no one can figure out a work around that works consistently. From what I've read, many, many Mac users have the same problem - multiple names are suddenly assigned to the same computer for no apparent reason. In my case, the "master" computer that runs my network completely is now constantly changing so much that it's name is now up to "Lynn's Computer (14); and I can't figure out why this is happening. I've shut down File Sharing completely on all of my computers and rebooted after doing the same (as suggested by others). Changing the name in preferences does nothing (as suggested by others). Disconnecting my Ethernet cable on one of the computers (as suggested by others) does nothing. There is something that triggers the computer to create a completely new computer name. Don't tell me that Mac sees an identical computer name and therefore gives it the same name with a number after it such as in the case of my current situation. I tend to use only one burner when i am cooking for a crowd.  as "My Computer (2), etc because I've never renamed my computer in the past! I am now up to 14 computer names for the same computer and have not renamed the computer until after I installed Yosemite and started having this problem. After installing Yosemite, the name it was given is (14); Really? 14 tries using an identical name as the original computer? After I saw (14), I have tried to rename the compute but it just starts a whole new cycle of generating a new computer" . This problem began happening immediately after my install of Yosemite. I've tried multiple work arounds as suggested by others and none of them work. Changing the computer name in Preferences does nothing other than creating a completely new computer name!  Is Apple aware of this? According to the answer above, NO. What are we supposed to do in meantime until Apple figures out that this is a problem?
A problem such as this should be addressed immediately.
    Respectfully,
    Lynn

  • How do I rename my mac mini server

How do I rename my late 2012 Mac Mini Server?
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory    4     GB  1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics   Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    Software    OS X 10.9.2
I was told that using  the command line, type:
    sudo -s  enter password, next
    csutil --set HostName example.com
    scutil --set ComputerName whatever
    scutil --set  LocalHostName whatever
I was also told that this may work well on new installations, but there may be a different procedure for renaming.
Is anyone acquainted with these procedures?
    Thanks Everyone.

See Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
Boot the Mini into TDM. Boot the iMac normally. The Mini's startup volume should appear on the iMac's Desktop. You can then treat it as any other disk drive. You can use Disk Utility to erase the Mini's drive. If you boot the iMac from an installer DVD then the Mini's drive should become available in the installer as an available target for the installation.
    See:
    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • Renaming 2000 Computer Problem

    Hi,
I've had to rename my computer and now I can't access or start my database. I got the Error ORA-12545. I read in this forum about creating an alias for the computer name in the Hosts file. I did that and now I get the message that the database is currently down and log in as SysDBA and start the database. I try that and it does not work.
Would you please guide me in the right direction? I am using Oracle 8i
    Thanks in advance,

You need to provide a bit more information.
First, how does your internet connection get to your iMac? Is it direct from a cable or DSL modem? Is there a router in the network either built-in to the modem or a separate device? Do you have Internet Sharing turned on or just Sharing? Are you routing from the Ethernet port to the Airport on your iMac? How is the Airport connection setup in Network preferences? Do you have security disabled or enabled?
Have you been to the Airport Support site? Have you used your online Help - select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for 'airport' and 'sharing' to find relevant articles.

I just downloaded iTunes on my new PC and all the music that I have purchased through ITunes that was backed up on the cloud won't play. It is telling me I must authorize this computer before it can play pre purchased music. how do I authorize my computer to play this music?
    Thank you for any assistance.

Tigon's already got you covered here. But I'll chime in with some English localisation advice.
There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

How do I make my computer the primary for my iPhone 3G? I am able to load music from my iTunes library but unable to delete music or create playlists on the phone from itunes. The computer I set the phone up with (primary) was destroyed.

There is no "main" or " primary" account.
Iphone, ipod touch, ipad will sycn with one and only one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will indeed erase the current content from the device and replace with content from the new computer.
Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of the old computer, to the new one.
