How do I rename the 2 optical drives in a mac pro

On the Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.8), using Toast to copy a CD, I often find that the "read" phase assumes I am going to "write" to a disc in the same Superdrive, even though there are two of them. The superdrives both have identical names, so selecting the drive is guesswork.
I've tried quite a few searches on both the Apple forums & Google, to find out if it's possible to rename these two drives (ie, in the same way that Windows allocates a drive letter to each).

Nope.
Once upon a time when ATA busses offered Master and Slave settings you could set one as Master, and Toast would automatically show that as the first optical drive on the list. It all went away once they went to cable select settings on the ATA.
I had/have the SAME issue and it got so thoroughly frustrating that I pulled one of the super-drives, (Pioneer DVR-112) installed it in an external case and stuffed a used $5 DVD-rom drive from Goodwill in the second slot.
(Actually, given how hard it is to find ATA DVD burners, you could do a lot worse than to put one aside for limited use. I'd give anything to get another DVR-112.)

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

You can use your G4's DVD drive with your Mac mini if the old computer has got Mac OS X 10.4.11 or newer. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • How do I replace the hard drive in my Macbook Pro

    Okay...
I need more space on my computer, so I want to replace the hard drive. I have no OSX install disk, but my computer is running Lion from the app store download. Can I just back up my data onto my new hard drive, and literally just swap them out? Also, how should I back up my drive? should I use a hard drive enclosure with my future drive, and just use time machine or something? Would time machine back up everything? Would the drive become bootable? Please help!

The best way to do this is buy your new drive.  Get the largest you can buy, and don't buy anything from Western Digital, just a recommendation.  The Samsung 1TB is pretty sweet.  Put that drive in a external encloser (they're inexpensive).  Using CarbonCopyCloner, clone your internal drive to your external one.  This is the cleanest way to do it.
Then, boot to the cloned drive, just to make sure it works.  It's just a test.  Shut down.  Replace drive (you can find the instructions for your MacBook Pro, by searching the support section of this website, the manual is there).
Start up with new drive.  Make sure everything is fine.  Use old drive in external enclosure as either a data drive or scratch drive for Photoshop or whatever you do.
I would set up Time Machine going forward with your new drive.  You need a drive at least as large, and probably 50% larger than your internal drive.

  • How do I reformat the boot drive on my MacBook Pro?

I presently have a BootCamp partition that I want to erase so all the disk space is contiguous.  I just started using Final Cut X and I found that my 350GB hard drive gets filled fast with the optimized media.  I wish I could keep it all on an external drive, but Final Cut X apparently needs to have everything on the OS boot disk.
Is there a safe and easy way to reformat my HD and lose the BootCamp partition?  I do have Time Machine running and up to date, but it remembers Boot Camp as one of the saved drives.  Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated
    thanks - Tony

I do, but no assurance it will work.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition. In your case you should see two partitions - one is your OS X volume and the other is your Windows volume.
    2. Click on the Windows volume (the bottom partition) to activate it. It will become surrounded by a dark blue outline. Now click on the Delete [-] button to remove the partition. Click on the Apply button and wait for the process to finish.
    3. If the partition is removed successfully then select the resizing gadget (circled in red, above) and drag it down to the bottom. Click on the Apply button again.
You should now have a single volume on the drive. If this does not work, and it may not, then you will have to try adding a new partition in the empty space by clicking on the Add [-] button to create a new partition. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended, Journaled then click on the Apply button. If this is successful, then you can try deleting this second partition and, again, extending the OS X partition to fill the entire drive.
No promises that the above will work properly. That would mean that to restore the drive to a single volume as it was new would mean having to re-partition the drive from scratch.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • 4 Questions re installing a second Optical Drive in a Mac Pro (Harpertown)

For years I have owned and used a Sony DRX-810UL-T optical drive as an external unit with my Mac Pro "Harpertown" purchased on February 19, 2009. It was connected to the computer using the firewire cable and it worked correctly.
    Some Background
Today it dawned on me I had an empty optical drive bay in the Mac Pro so I should move the Sony drive in there and eliminate a bit of the clutter on my computer desk. I read the section on installing optical drives in the little Apple manual that came with my computer but it only discussed a single drive installation.
Checked on line and found several sources describing how to do this and a couple of YouTube videos also showing how to do this. (Oddly only one of the videos mentioned the need for plugging in the power cable).
I made sure I plugged the cables into the proper units as both had helpful legends on them indicating which was for the top drive and which was for the bottom drive.
After installation I powered up and found neither drive would appear.
Checked the About this Mac item in the Apple menu and got confirmation that the system didn't see any drives. Opened the computer again and unplugged the Sony's power and data cables then closed the computer and fired up again.
The original Super Drive again appeared and worked correctly.
    The Questions:
    1. Since the Super drive came with the Mac Pro and was in the top space can I assume it needed to stay there and not get moved to the lower space?
    2. Since the Sony DRX-810UL-T has the correct connectors does this indicate this drive can be used with the Harpertown Mac Pro?
    3. If it can, did I miss setting some jumpers? I noticed both drives have one jumper in place but each appears to be in a slightly different spot than the other.
    4. Since the Sony drive worked correctly with my current OS (10.6.6) using the firewire cable can I assume it does not need a firmware update to be used internally.
    Wrap up
Since the original Super Drive is working properly I am sure I did no damage to it or the computer. It would be nice to be able to get the Sony DVD drive to work internally, however.
Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can offer some help with this situation.

    hatter,
Thank you for this added information. Here's the current status of things.
Just to check that the Sony drive would work internally I disconnected the superdrive (ata cable and power cable) and made the Sony drive the only drive plugging it in as if it was the top drive. The jumper for it was set to cable select.
The Profiler found it and listed is in both the ATA section and the disc burner section.
I checked the jumper on the superdrive to be sure it was also set for cable select and plugged both drives back in using the top connections for the super drive and bottom connections for the Sony,
Again only the SuperDrive appears in the ATA list and and the disc burner list.
I am beginning to wonder it the problem may actually be with the ribbon cable that snakes back to the motherboard.
Since that cable has a set of dual outlets at the drive end and has them labeled for top and bottom, is it possible to plug in only one drive using the bottom connector as a test to see if data flows to the motherboard?
Is it possible some part of that cable has somehow become disconnected at the motherboard?

  • Compatability of optical drive, PowerMac to Mac Pro

I have a PowerMac G5 that I am no longer using. I now use a Mac Pro, I think it's 1.1. Would the SuperDrive from the Mac Pro work in my PowerMac? If so, how do I remove it? (I know how to put it into the PowerMac)

    Hi,
G5s used IDE/ATAPI opticals, Mac Pros use SATA Opticals.
Might work with the right adapter...

  • Windows Vista will not recognize the dvd drive in my Mac Pro

After running windows updates, Windows Vista can no longer find the drivers for the dvd drive. Any suggestions?

Thank goodness for restore points. That was all I needed to do (system repair, do you want to restore to last check point) to be up and running.
I found my problem documented as an issue with Samsung SATA + Windows 7, and my X58. Curious, as moving a working system from one motherboard to another would always end up with Samsung SATA DVD not working, but LG is fine... so looks like time to buy another SATA DVD.
This from /technet.microsoft.com exactly describes the issue:
*CD/DVDRW from TSSTCorp (Samsung) drive, after install W7 without any problem not recognized...* | Modified on 9/9/2009 4:48 PM by lmarcelo
CD/DVD/rw do not respond on the Windows 7 Professional RC 32 bit, I have an Intel G35 desktop board, and 2.3 Ghz. CPU Intel Dual-Core 2, with sata optical drive. (From Samsung) Works fine in the raw clean install, but after the second reboot in the device manager appears with a yellow triangle, so I can't read nor write any CD or DVD.
I did this several times, (Format and install), even with a new CD drive, but it's always the same. Using a 160 Gb. WD hard disk, and alternated with a 400 Gb Samsung Sata HD make no difference at all.
Problem: Can't do anything with CD-DVD drive. (Messagge in the Device System General tab Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)).
By the way, this configuration was working fine in XP Pro. SP3. Any hint? clue? same problem? any one?

  • Satellite M30 Pro: how to change the optical drive?

    Hi there,
could anybody please give me a hand on changing/replacing the optical drive on my Satellite Pro M30?
Alas, my drive is a DVD-ROM/CD-RW. I have another one with the capability of burning DVD's (Super-Multi drive from Matsu****a). I just wonder how I could replace them, since it os not possible to easily slide them out?
    Thank you.
    Jan

    Hi
To remove the optical drive you need only to remove 2 screws which are placed at the bottom of the unit on the drive side. Then you can simply slide outward the drive to disconnect it from the connector on the system board.
The drive is placed in the plastic frame. So you need also this frame for a new drive.
To remove the plastic frame from the device you have to remove 4 screws.
    Bye
