How do I repair my desktop AND dashboard after everything else failed?

Hello,
I tried finding a thread with my problem here on MacSupport, but those solutions didn't work and weren't exactly my laptop problems.
I'm using a 2010 MacBook Pro.  I had recently updated to the Maverick OS, and the only real problem I was experiencing was some lag in starting up, loading up programs, switching between my desktops, etc.  It wasn't a bother.
However, starting a week or two ago, my laptop would just freeze while I was studying, listening to Pandora.  In which case I'd have to hard reset my laptop.  This happened at least once a day.
Just yesterday (Dec 6), as I finished taking my exam (using ExamSoft/SofTest - required by the school) my laptop froze.  I again had to hard reset.  The laptop was operational, but I noticed two big problems after I left the test site:
Problems
My desktop is unresponsive.  I can't click, drag, select, right click, create a new folder, and all my icons have disappeared.  However, when I spotlight my Desktop folder, all my programs, files, and shortcuts are still there.  It's a bit inconvenient to search, open Desktop, and then open the file I need to.
My widgets along with my Dashboard has disappeared!  I had some pertinent info regarding my classes in my notes, but I have no way to access them.  Before I would just 3 finger swipe to the far left, hot corned, of F4'd to access my dashboard.  Not anymore.  Mission Control from System Preferences shows Dashboard as "Off" no matter how many times I change it.
What I tried
I did as much reading up as I could afford (I still have 1 exam before the end of my term), and the posted solutions both here and elsewhere haven't been satisfactory for the issue I'm experiencing.
Relaunched Finder
Restarted the laptop
In System Preferences, Dashboard was "Off," switched that to "As Overlay," and "As Space," and it reverted to "Off"
Moved Dashboard app icon from Applications to the dock, clicked it, right clicked it
Mission controlled (hot corner) from the desktop to add more desktops and hopefully add back Dashboard (I was getting a bit desperate)
In Disk Utility: I verified the Disk and then repaired the Disk.
In Disk Utility: I verified the Disk permissions and then repaired the Disk permissions.
I updated from OSX Maverick to OSX Yosemite.
Kept the laptop off overnight (6 hours)
And many other things like CtrlR/S during rebooting
Reboot as Safe Mode
One of the things I read about that I haven't done is Archive and Reformat, and I really don't want to do that, especially at this time.
Additional Info
When I created a new account, I was able to FINALLY "right click" from my Trackpad (I don't have a mouse), and create a new folder on the desktop!  However, Dashboard would STILL not work.  And of course none of my files and programs are in the second account.
I fly home in 4 days from med school so that I can finally go to my Mac store in Cali, but I'd like to try get this seemingly small technical error fixed.

  • How do i see my desktop and applications after a time machine restore?

What a disaster.   For reasons I won't bore anyone with, I had to end up reformatting my iMac hard drive (internal drive, I7) to get my machine working again.  I have had a daily backup going (thank goodness) with my Drobo NAS drive using Time Machine.  Yes, I know Apple doesn't technically support network drives with Time Machine, but anyone with a Drobo (and Data Robotics) will tell you it works great.   That's NOT the issue.
I flattened (reformatted) my machine and reinstalled Snow Leopard.  I then connected to my Drobo drive with Time Machine, and searched the most recent backups and had it restore THE ENTIRE MACHINE.  All applications, all documents, etc.  Took about 14 hours.
I also created the same account (I think!) that I used before when I installed Snow Leopard.    However, when I reboot, my desktop looks like a fresh Snow Leopard desktop, and none of my applications or documents show anywhere.  Yet, I am sure they are there, because when I went to later restore one file (Photoshop CS5), it said "this file already exists, do you want to copy over it?"  I chose not to.
I feel like it must be some permissions or account thing, but for the life of me, i can't figure out where I went wrong.   It would be a HUGE inconvenience for me to truck this huge machine (and my network backup drive) into an Apple store to talk to one of their experts, so I'm hoping I can get this resolved here with your help.
Basically, I'm stumped.  Anyone got any ideas?
    thanks
    dc

From your description, it sounds like you may have more serious issues than a simple permissions problemand that you are now dealing with a dysfunctional "Frankensystem." Nevertheless, it is usually worthwhile trying something relatively fast and simple before going on to more complicated solutions.
You have not indicated what remedies you may have already tried outside of the setup Assistant Tip, so I am assuming you have not yet tried anything.
I have never faced this precise problem before, but in other situations involving permissions issues, I have often had success doing the following:
    1) Do a "Get Info" on the folder(s) with which you are experiencing issues. In your case, this is pretty well your entire restored drive, since the Applications folder exists at the root level. So go ahead and do a "Get Info" on your internal hard drive.
    2) Click on the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the GI window and enter your admin password when prompted.
    3) At the bottom of the window in the Sharing and Permissions section, ensure that your disk is set up this way:
    system=Read & Write
    admin=Read & Write
    everyone=Read only
    4) Click on the gear icon and choose "Apply to enclosed items" from the pull-down menu. Allow this to work through, which in the case of a whole drive may take some time.
    5) Reboot the machine and log back into your home account. Hopefully, you can now see and access all the files that should be there.
If this doesn't work, your problem may lie in the fact that upon your reinstall of Snow Leopard, you created a home folder with the same name as the one you are trying to restore from your backup, thereby creating a big headache. You might have to repeat the entire reinstall/restore process, but this time creating an account with an entirely different name when you install Snow Leopard, and then deleting it after the restore from backup.
    OR
If the total amount of data contained on your Drobo Time Machine backup is not yet prohibitively huge, I would suggest that the easiest and most foolproof solution might be to use a program such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive to a partition on a storage device of sufficient size directly attached to your iMac. You could then reformat your internal drive and repeat the complete restore process from the Snow Leopard install disk which should then yield normal results, i.e. a fully functional home account in which everything works as usual upon login.
This will eat up considerable time, but most significantly, it is machine time, not your time!
In my experience, the entire Time Machine process is a finely tuned one that does not take kindly to tinkering under the hood or straying from the blessed path, as you have just discovered.

  • How can I retrieve my contacts and pictures after installing iOS6 on my iphone?

How can I retrieve my contacts and pictures after installing iOS6 on my iphone? Don't call me stupid! I was relying on iCloud to have backed all this up, but turns out it didn't work. Can anyone help me get my photos back - they were of my baby daughter. Also, I've lost all my contacts. Please help.

Unfortunately no. The only way the phone backs up is if you make it back up. You either connect to iTunes and backup and sync, or you set it up for a wifi sync to iCloud. But you have to setup iCloud to start with. You have learned a hard lesson on how to make sure you import pictures on a regular basis like you would the digital camera. When things happen to the phone, this is the media that is lost the most (pictures in camera roll). After taking a number of pictures, and especially ones you consider important, you should connect the phone to the computer and import them, so there is a backup copy on the computer.
Contacts are saved in the backup as well, however they are really designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer, or backed up to iCloud or other cloud service. And, the only way to go back in time on the phone is to restore from a backup, but you also have to remember, you would lose everything on the phone that you had done since that backup, so it is a double edged sword.

  • How do I restore my tabs and windows, whether open or closed, when everything else fails?

This is not so much a question, as an answer that some people desperately need.
Ever since Version 34, Firefox has done a superb job of restoring the tabs that the user has created, either on restarting Firefox (if that option is chosen) or on request.
The details of how to restore tabs are covered in Firefox's basic help online, and even how to deal with several crashes in a row (such as in an addon) ruin the normal backup file are also well explained.
However, today I accidentally pressed Alt+F4 twice on my poorly-designed keyboard and closed my main window, with 93 tabs, and another Firefox window as well. I'm not sure this is exactly what happened, but I lost all 93 of my tabs.
I read many of the postings in which people give various suggestions, but none worked. Every time I restored a version of the sessionstore.js file I saw the same lonely empty tab. Restoring prefs.js did nothing, and neither did making changes in the internal configuration constants.
I tried refreshing/resetting Firefox (which preserves bookmarks), but I still couldn't restore the tabs. It was now clear that the problem was in sessionstore.js (and all its backups) for sure.
I'm writing this for people who must restore their windows or tabs, and don't mind getting technical about it. That was my situation.
The solution was to realize that the sessionstore.js file contains JSON code, which is an efficient way to represent integers and strings arranged in a tree structure.
I figured there must be a JSON editor somewhere, and it turns out there is a great one available online, at www.jsoneditoronline.org . It can read a file on your computer, edit it, then save it back on your computer.
As soon as I viewed sessionstore.js in the editor, it was obvious how easy this was going to be. The top level of the tree is understandable. I simply grabbed the data representing the window with 93 tabs, and dragged it from the list of closed Firefox windows to the list of open windows. This automatically moved the history of each tab, and even the strings entered into forms.
After copying sessionstore.js back to the Firefox profile, I started Firefox one more time. The playing of Pandora signalled that my tabs were back and functioning once again.
Now, editing JSON code is not something that everyone is ready for. And your problem might not be reflected in the JSON tree so simply. But, for technical-minded people who don't want to lose their tabs or windows to a mistake or a crash, this technique can be just what's needed when everything else fails.

That sounds very handy. Nice going. A kind of backup would be to
create a folder in the Bookmarks Manager, and keep a list of links there.
Just one note. The sessionstore file shows the last windows / tabs that
are open. Because the window with the 90 tabs was closed first, then the
other, that is what caused your issue.

All you would have to do is change the iTunes Store Country, simply go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region. After that select store that you want to use.

Widgets do not display elegantly against a cluttered desktop, nor even against a clean desktop with a busy photo for wallpaper.
Is there any kind of preference (or etc.) that would cause the Desktop always to go hidden (go black, go solid color, intensely darken or etc.) whenever Dashboard is invoked?
In other words, how can we stop the Desktop from "bleeding through" the display of our widgets?

  • How do I install CC Desktop and Apps to a drive other than "C"?

After several problems, help from the forum, and finally an Adobe tech from India, the tech was able to install CC Desktop.  The tech had to make hidden files visible, and change an existing file OO?? (I can't remember the last two letters") to OO??_old.  Maybe this will help someone else.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but as the tech was downloading and installing CC Desktop, I didn't see any option for which drive to install it on.  I am now installing CC apps.  I see no option as to which drive to install the app.
    I have my computer setup as C: operating system; D: sctratch; E: programs; F: files, G: cd/dvd.
How can I install CC Desktop to "E"?  If done, will CC apps automatically install on "E"?  Will CC Desktop work properly on other than "C" drive?   Will CC apps work properly on other than "C" drive?  If CC Desktop should always be on "C", can I stll install CC apps on "E"?  I get no dialog box or window providing an option of where to install any of the CC programs.

While CCApp Prefs does give you this option, it doesn't respect the settings and still installs to C: Drive. This is a big problem for those using an SSD drive to boot. Why would something as simple as choosing your install folder, like every other application in the world be an issue that has taken over a year to fix?
