How do i reset a movement of files to an external hard drive

Hi Everybody,
Iam in BIG trouble ! ! ! .After getting dialogue a box on my PC stating that the hard drive was almost full ( 106.9 of it's 107Gb memory is being used) i went out and purchased a 640Gb ext. hard drive which i was assured was a "plug and play" device.
I wired in the ext HD and proceeded to "send to " the "itunes" folder to it without any problem. It took almost 50 mins to transfer all 70Gb of video and music to the ext. HD. Afterwards when i clicked on the "itunes " icon i got a dialogue box stating the files had been moved or deleted ...in other words it appears i moved not only the contents of itunes but the program aswell.I restored the PC to an earlier date but still had to "uninstall and re-install"( i was prompted by the PC to do this ) itunes to get it to do ANYTHING.
When i plugged my ipod back in to the computer itunes told me that " this i-pod is synced to another library".
I decided to transfer the contents of my ipod to the pc but very little of the music was transferred and none of the video !!!!
So now i have ....
1. Purchases in itunes that won't download because the hard disk is full .
2. An ipod that will not correctly sync with itunes on my PC
So where are all my files ???? the hard drive no longer shows an "itunes folder" but is still full ! ! When i "search" for "video" i can find all the videos in documents and settings but if i try to delete them i get a dialogue box stating "CANNOT DELETED--ACCESS IS DENIED ....MAKE SURE DISK IS NOT FULL OR WRITE PROTECTED AND THAT THE FILE IS NOT IN USE"
I can "open with" the video file and the PC switches on itunes and plays the video...but if i delete the video from the itunes library (to make some room on the PC's hard drive ) it is deleted from itunes library but stays on the PC's hard drive.
HELP PLEASE  !  ! WHAT HAVE I DONE AND HOW CAN I UNDO IT ???

Use your operating system to move the photos to the external hard drive, keeping the same folder hierarchy; then in Lightroom relink via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
Do not take this as an opportunity to rearrange or reorganize your folders or photos.

Ensure that the external is correctly formatted
    Drag and dropped the files
Test to be sure that the moved files work
Once the moved files work delete the originals

I accidentally deleted my media files from iTunes and Trash when I was trying to move the files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to restore the media files from a Time Machine backup or from iTunes Match? What are the steps to do this?

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

  • I need to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp what disk do i use and how do i move certain files from an external hard drive

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp.  I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer.  When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine.   however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side.  Originally I had Parellels on my computer.  After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive.  Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop.    I am not sure how to do any of this.  I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED  HELP>

First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive.

  • Had approximately 40 collection sets but they have disappeared since my Mac hard drive over filled and I move some files unto and external hard drive

Because my Mac HD was so completely full I had toI drag and drop mainly image files into an external hard drive. I looked in my trash(Mac) and I did notice a LR folder I had created so I reintroduced the LR file into my external hard drive and tried to open the files but I was not able to do so. The files had number designations so I could not determine what they contained but as I wrote I could not open them. There were many back ups....
Do you have your original catalog with the Collection Sets? What happened to your original catalog file with the collections sets? Where is it now?
What were these files in the folder in the Trash? Was there a file whose name ended with .LRCAT in the trash?
If you just dragged files to the external HD, this should not result in files appearing in the trash, unless there are other steps you haven't told us.

  • Can I move scratch files to an external hard drive.

I am completing a project in which I am making DVDs of the interviews of 50 people. I saved the FCE project file into which I uploaded their interview for each person onto a external hard drive, but the scratch disk for these files is in my Documents. After completing about 10 of them the memory on my Mac Book Pro is running low. I deleted all of the render files, but still need more room.
Can I move the scratch files for the first 10 people I have completed onto the same external hard drive where their FCE file is located? And then reset my scratch disk to be the next external hard drive I start to upload to?
What steps would I take to make sure all of the information I needed had been transferred to the external drive before moving the scratch files on my documents into the trash and emptying the trash?
    Thanks!

If you relocate the files, FCE will give you a message when it opens asking to reconnect them. Look at this thread for more information on reconnecting media, specifically my post with the pictures:

You can reset your scratch disk to put all future captured files onto your external in FCE System Settings.

  • Hard Drive crashed. How do I retrieve my old iPhoto files from the external hard drive I had used to backup?

My computer was logged in using my Apple ID.  I was out of town when my hard drive crashed, so my wife took it in to get replaced.  When doing so the person at the Apple store helping her had her create a new Apple ID to use with the computer.  Now, when I open time machine I don't see anything from before this hard drive crashed.  How do I get access to my old photos from iPhoto that should have been backed up on the external hard drive?

Sorry I am unclear where the backup is located.. On a time capsule??
Recovery of iphoto library you need to use pondini.

  • How do I download a move from itunes onto an external hard drive?

For whatever reason, my hard drive onboard does not have enough space for a movie to download.  I don't want to take the time to clear the space, since the one thing Apple makes harder than a PC is seeing which files are the biggest for cleaning off hour disk.  I have an external drive with plenty of space, but can't seem to get itunes to recognize it as a destination.  How can I download my movie onto it swo I can them transfer it to my iPad?

luckily there are 3rd party tools that can help with that:
    Disk Inventory X
    WhatSize
I have an external drive with plenty of space, but can't seem to get itunes to recognize it as a destination.
before downloading the movie, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point iTunes media folder location to the external.
iTunes will put new additions to your library where ever iTunes media folder location is pointed.

  • How do I moves files to an external hard drive to free up space on my MacBookPro

My MacBook Pro is running out of memory space. I want to move some files to my external hard drive, but when I highlight the file and try to move it, it doesn't go into the new file I have created on my external drive. I did it when I first bought my external drive, but that was over a year ago, and now I guess I have forgotten how I did it. Help!

Highlight your external drive with left mouse button click, select get Info of Finder File menu, then tick off "Ignore owenership on this volume" could solve the problem.

  • Failure to copy MOV files to an external hard drive

I only have 185 GB worth of hard drive space on my Mac and I do video editing, so I always move the files onto an external hard drive to save the space on my computers hard drive. Lately, I've been having issues when some of the MOV files give me the following error:
Sorry, the following operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred.

Some of the files will copy over perfectly fine, but others give this error. All of these files have been created from Final Cu Pro 7.0. Please let me know what I can do to move them off of my computer.

How big are they and how is the external drive formatted?

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • How do I move all my iphoto picture files to an external hard drive and then remove iphoto '11 from my computer?

I would like to remove iphoto '11 from my computer completely because it is causing too many issues.  I would like to ensure that my picture files are safe and stored in an external hard drive.  How do I copy the picture files to an external hard drive without taking the iphoto application files with them? Also, do I need to keep the originals, modified, and masters files of each picture?

My iphoto has been unresponsive, and I am unable to do anything once I launch the application.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As to migrating to Aperture: It will import the iPhoto Library and maintain the relationships between Masters and Previews/ Originals and Modified versions.
There is no way to recreate those relationships in any other app.
