How can I reset messages.app?

I'm going to be completely honest here, a while ago I spammed a friend to the point where I froze my own messages app on my mac and now when I try to re-open it the spinning colorful pinwheel just pops up and never stops. Yes I learned a lesson but I'd like to obviously use the app again so I was wondering how I can reset the app. Thanks for everyones support!

I have never come across a situation like this.
If you try to send a Super IM over the AIM service it normally will take a few minutes (literally) to come back with a response that it has messed up
I have not tried it with a Jabber service.
There are ways of deleting one or some of the .plists involved that can cause a reset of sorts but these are normally used for other things.
I have never had a Message "Stuck" in such a way that the App Hangs so that a .plist might have details of the IM it is sending.
With Messages shut down open the Console app (In Applications/Utilities)
In the System Diagnostic Reports do you have anything for Messages

This Hang was for only 3 and a bit secs (yours will probably list a longer period).
Now go to the All Messages section of Console and try starting Messages.
Do you get additional info (there may be a reveal triangle to open) ?
Things to try. (one at a time)
Use the Finder > Go Menu > Hold ALT key > Select Library method to open the Home Folder/Library (That is normally invisible)
Open Preferences.
In here find the following .plists
com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist
com.apple.imagent.plist
If it was an AIM Message try deleting (Drag to Trash) the AIM one.
If Jabber (GoogleTalk or Facebook or other) they try the Jabber one.
After the deletion restart Messages.
If deleting the service .plist did not work try deleting com.apple.imagent.plist
If it happens to be an iMessages IM then delete both of these
com.apple.imessage.bag.plist
com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist
You will need to restart Messages again. The second of these is likely to need you to re-enter your Apple ID.
To be clear.
Qith Messages shut down then Delete one .plist (AIM or Jabber)
Restart Messages.
If it does not work shut down (force Quit) Mesages
Remove the imagent .plist
Restart Messages.
If a iMessages conversation then delete both .plists and restart Messages (you may need to re-enter your Apple ID)

Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID. Your only option is to delete the content and buy it again with the new Apple ID.

Try going into your preferences and move this file to the trash com.apple.Preview.plist, then give it a try.
To get to your preferences you need to be in the finder then hold down the option key while clicking on the go menu item then select library>preferences.

Do you have any technically minded friends who could carefully extract the CD for you?
Your cheapest solution would be to purchase an external DVD writer from eg Amazon for about 14 UKP - there is a wide choice for under 20 UKP.

How do I reset an app's icon so the app will launch?

In a test user account, everything is fine. In my main account, however, the Photoshop icon is now a blank document icon and Finder says it is a Microsoft Word document rather than an application. If I double click on a Photoshop data file, Photoshop launches and runs just fine. I've booted from my install DVD and repaired the disk and permissions. I've tried renaming home/Library/Cache and home/Library/Preferences to no avail. Throwing away Photoshop and reinstalling from the CD has no effect. Something is very strange with my main user account. Anyway to set it right short of backing everything up and moving to a new user account?

Find out what your user id (UID) is by opening the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and typing idPress return, and the line you get back will have your uid as the first item. Let's suppose it is 501.
Then go to /Library/Caches/ (that's the top-level Library, not the one in your home folder) and look for a file "com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore". Trash it, or move it to the Desktop. Then, go to ~/Library/Preferences/ (that is the Library in your Home folder) and Trash or move "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist". Log out and log in again: has this made a difference?
This should allow you to launch Photoshop by double-clicking a PS document. If you still can't launch the application directly, post back.

Have you got any apps from other accounts on your iPad, not just the currently logged in one ?
You could try closing the App Store app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with App Store 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the App Store app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Change Preview app's default monitor?

Hi,
On a multi-display setup, does anyone know how to tell the Preview app which display it should use when opening files?
I have a four display setup, including an NTSC monitor. Preview keeps opening windows on the NTSC display, which isn't always on. I'd rather it default to display on one of my other screens.

Agreed - this is annoying. I just toyed around with this program (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/) but couldn't find any obvious/easy fix.
This is one area where Windows, dare I say it, does better, but only if the application author has coded a File, Send To.. menu item. I get the feeling that the OS X "Services" menu can be set up to do this using an Applescript but I don't know how.
Would be really good if there was a fix for this - I'm an Exchange/Entourage user so have very little choice.

Tap on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and log out of the account, and then log back in with the updated version of your account so as to 'refresh' the account on it (you updated your existing account with a new email address, you didn't create a new account ?).
